"Nick," Newgrange said, and he sounded desperate. He didn't take the hand. "I don't understand any of this—I have a home—and so do you. And I—I've never hidden behind any mask of perfection, I know I'm not perfect, but I have never, ever kidnapped—tortured—someone. I would never be involved in that, and to be honest, I don't even know what you're talking about. How can you—are you serious right now? Like, this really isn't a joke?"
The Squire looked lost; he was searching Whisler's face for some crack—some smile, some laugh waiting to fall out so he could make fun of him for being so gullible.
He was so tired; it felt like he was walking around with a bunch of bricks tied onto him. Yet, somehow, his body still had enough energy to tremble.
Weakly, he added, "We have a home, you and me…here, like this. Us. Don't let them tell you that you need a new home—a better home. I can give you everything you need."
He was quiet for a second, and then looked up into Nicolae's eyes.
"…Can't I?"

Whisler was sure he was going to take his hand…he was so sure of it…though…the more seconds that passed, the less sure he became, and finally, after Newgrange’s final word, he slowly lowered the hand and looked away. “I guess not…not if you can’t give me this. I thought…”
His hand balled into a fist again and he looked back at Newgrange, his expression a mix of anger and bitter betrayel. “I just thought I meant more to you, I guess. I don’t know. It seemed like the best way to stop your dreams from happening was to join them now. What’s the point of fighting if we’ve already lost? They’re going to win. And the torture? Well. Some of our lot rounded up a crap ton of negaverse agents and held them somewhere hurting them and breaking their bones and just doing all sorts of rotten things. And I didn’t think that we heroes would ever do something like that.”
He took a step back, his eyes prickling at the edges and turned around. “I’ll still wait for you. For a while at least. I don’t know where Benitoite is, so. I can’t ask for him to help me right this minute. I guess. Call me if you want to come. If not…”
The prickling turned to moisture, clouding his vision and making the night swim around him. “Well. I guess this is goodbye, then.”

Newgrange stood still; it felt like the world was moving at hyper speed around him. But he had stopped. Everything inside of him had stopped. Quietly, he whispered, "Don't do this, Nick. I don't know what happened or how this idea got into your head, but don't…don't go looking for them. Just sit it out, come stay with me for a while if you need to. We'll talk it out—we can work this out. You don't need them."
He sounded desperate, pleading.
"I don't want to be your enemy—but I can't do that, I can't just drop everything. I know what Chaos does to people—it changes them. It'll make you someone you're not. It won't be a home, just a prison. Stay away from that Benitoite guy, Nick—you have to. You're better than that. Whatever's going on, we can fix. It doesn't have to be goodbye."

The knight closed his eyes, forcing the tears from them and letting them fall down his face. It felt like he was being torn in two. Part of him wanted to stay with Arias…wanted to believe that everything would be okay. That he didn’t need them. He had been happy last night at his wonder, hadn’t he? So why was he feeling such a draw towards the Negaverse again? Why was this happening…
“Don’t tell me what to do, Arias. I wanted you to come with me. And I’ll make sure you come with me, one way or another.” The words were hard, cold.
He turned to look back at the squire one last time, giving him what could only be called a glare the tears on his face shining in the moonlight. “This is goodbye. For now.” Whisler turned away again and jumped from the building’s edge, disappearing into the night, anger and hurt and…and something else coursing through him. He hated feeling like this. Hated it so much.

There was that pulse of cold fear, only this time it was piercing. This time, it sounded like a threat—and Whisler seemed like he meant it. It was shocking, like a slap to the face, and left Newgrange stunned. When he finally gathered his wits about him—when he finally got it in his head that Nick was running away—running into something very dangerous, it was too late. He ran to the edge of the building and looked for him, but there was no energy signature, and he couldn't see.
Whisler could have gone in any direction, and Newgrange snapped his neck from one direction to another, desperately searching.
For nearly five minutes he fought over which direction to even run in—and then it hit him that it didn't matter.
Whisler was stronger than him, and seemed hell-bent on the Negaverse. At this point, seeking him out might only make things worse.
Trembling, he powered down.
If he'd been of more sound mind, he would have had the wits to go somewhere private, but he wasn't thinking straight. Black was swimming at the corner of his vision and he felt light headed.
He slipped from Newgrange to Arias as he moved to sit, cross-legged atop the building.
He had never felt so alone.
