America's eyes crinkled up in amusement at the concerned look over. "Naw, had a black eye and a good sized robin's egg for a bit, but I'm fine as anything now. My truck, not so much, but she's still got a future if I've anything to say for the old girl." A glass of lemonade was set in front of America and she grinned a thanks at the bartender before taking a long sip. "Since last July right up through early April. I don't know if I stayed long enough anywhere to say I've been there, but I got to see a lot." Her grin widened, "I stopped at about every dang roadside attraction worth a billboard."

Temperance gave a low whistle. "That's a long road trip. I've always wanted to leave town, y'know." She stretched out her legs under the edge of the bar. America seemed so worldly, somehow. She'd seen things Temperance never would - and Temperance didn't particularly want to travel, not for the sake of traveling. She just wanted a place that was hers, but everything was transitionary; she'd never own a house, for example. So what was the point? "So, did you see any giant potatoes or Jesus burned into toast at these roadside attractions?" Temperance stirred her coffee absently. "You're gonna leave town when your truck is fixed?"

"It's worth a trip or two, when you've time. But sounds like that might be in short supply, right now," America added sympathetically. "Oh boy, did I! And giant balls of string and UFO museums and The Thing!" The waitress laughed into her drink at all the weird and random scattered across the American highways. A couple weeks ago, she'd have given a fairly up front, that and once I've saved enough for gas money for a few months. But things kept shifting and she'd felt increasingly drawn to the town and its people. It's mysteries. "Can't say. Awhile after at least, but I'm growing to like it here and..." she admits, "I don't really have plans. Like school or a career waiting or anything."

She nodded. "I kind of chose nursing at random. N-not that I hate it! It's just time consuming, but I'm not doing anything else, anyway." Keep busy, keep occupied. It was important. Temperance looked at America raptly when she spoke about the silly like highway pitstops across the nation - it was almost as thought she could imagine them, briefly, just by looking at America. ...Another fanciful thought for a late night. "Sounds fun." She paused for a moment. "I don't... think it's bad, necessarily, to not have plans. It's kind of freeing, maybe? And you can always make plans."

"Nursing's important, though, isn't it? Even at random, it's a good sorta random." There was a very clear look of admiration that accompanied this. "It is freeing, though, gotta say," America's voice turned wistful at it. "But I don't regret having an excuse to stick around here awhile. Get to meet lots of good folks, don't I?" She winked shamelessly at Temperance.

"I-it, well, I'm not a nurse yet." Temperance fidgeted a bit and fidgeted even more when America winked. It was too, too much. She blushed. "Uh, well, I have to be going, I, uh, who do I bother for a check?"

Having a bit of mercy for the girl (and gone over her break times by a few minutes anyway) America gave a soft chuckle and grabbed the girl's check. When Temp left with her copy, she'd find America's phone number scrawled across the back.

In a fit of rare courage, Temperance scribbled her number wildly on a napkin at the table, sticking it partly under the coffee cup. Before she could regret it, she tossed some money on top of it and skeddadled. It would be much, much later when she saw America's own number on her receipt.
