Aleksy preened, while trying not to look too obviously like he was preening, which seemed to manifest with him tucking the longer side of his bangs back behind his ear and applying himself more studiously to his drawing. "What a disappointment," said Aleksy, pausing to evaluate his work. It wasn't terrible. He shrugged. "It's a tiny New England town," he said. "These places are always strange." Liminal. Strange and shifting and straddling the line between this world and the next... Aleksy's head jerked up, black eyes (black black, not just dark: black as pitch or the places between stars) searching Thorne's face for something. Some sign of the Otherworld's touch. He saw: shadows under Thorne's eyes. Hair too tousled to be fashionable, tattoos of songbirds strangled, but nothing of the Otherworld's... Corruption. Aleksy smiled, natural and easily. "You'll get used to it."

Thorne couldn't help watching Aleksy's mannerisms, working his jaw and feeling the familiar emptiness in the hollow of his throat. Pausing in his work, he drew his hand to his mouth, biting for a moment on one of the knuckles in thought. "I imagine there's a hierarchy to such things," Thorne said, "and this one seems like it should be a crown jewel." And then there was something. Terrible. Terrifying. Aleksy looked up at him and it was as if he'd been swallowed by another creature entirely. Thorne didn't flinch, but there was a sudden tension that lapsed through him like a lighting strike. Because in that split second gaze he felt like he'd seen the work of galaxies crumbling. The darkest parts of the universe, the edges where the world ended and the shadows began. His breath drew short. To a stop. "Aleksy," he said, but then he didn't know what else there was to say. For a long time he just looked at him, watching, wondering. And then he breathed out and rumbled, "Maybe. I doubt I'll ever get used to someone like you though."

"Imagine that haunting tour," said Aleksy dryly. "And here is where local dumbass cop got lost in the woods for three ******** days..." He lapsed silent, and looked up to meet Thorne's gaze again. "Someone like me," he asked, eyebrows lifting. "I don't know what you mean."

"I think you do," Thorne retorted, his voice low and rolling, like a thunder clap, "I think you know exactly what I mean and you'd rather just play coy." He dropped his hand and drew another vicious set of lines in the sketchbook, outlining the silhouette of flowers, of a setting that felt remnant of the shop but sideways - different somehow, as though pulled through a mirror and out of a dream. "And here is where the florist will either bite you or offer you to come inside." Thorne smirked. "Somehow, it sounds like there should be a catch, don't you think?"

Did Thorne know? How could he know without Aleksy being able to see some sign of the otherworld's touch on hi,? Aleksy tried to suppress his instinct to sit up straight and deny it, but altogether failed on the first count. "I suppose there should," said Aleksy, "But in this case, all the florist wants is company." He returned the smirk with interest, a little flash of teeth: "Can you do that?"

Thorne hissed out a noise deep in his throat, raw and animal. His smile wasn't full, wasn't even close. It was a ghosting, dangerous thing that spoke of something else past the mans anxiety and two-dimensional front. "Company is a two way street, Aleksy," he said, "but I might be up for a challenge."

"I sacrifice virgins," Thorne retorted, dryly. He leaned forward, laughing slowly to show the lie, into the emptiness of the flower shop apart from them. "I'll show you. If you want." shibrogane awesome look at these nerds go
