Finn nodded, bearing in mind that Jeremiah's estimate was likely from the entrance to the park. Either way, they should have been there by now - but he supposed there was no harm in going a little further down the trail. "I should go back and see her," said Finn. "When I don't have Aleksy to worry about." He'd been the last person to see Heliodora or her friends on this side, and though he never spoke about it... it weighed heavily on him. "I think you're right," Finn admitted, looking around. There was no sign of anything so much as slightly resembling Heliodora's glade. "I don't think it exists here. It's an Otherworld thing." "Mangrove trees are tropical, anyway," he added. "Too cold for them to grow here." He tapped the hard-packed ground with his foot. "Too dry."

"Helidora's very easy to talk to," Jeremiah admitted, "and willing to talk." The corner of his mouth twitched up into a brief smile. "Also if you go visit her, take her a book or something. She likes to read and has nothing to read aside from what I just dropped off to her." Which was Algie's entire series. The detective was still hard pressed to not get a brief look on his face at the mention of Otherworld but it flickered away quickly. "Yes as well as the wrong type of soil. Our weather here doesn't really lend itself to them growing either." He stopped himself from continuing on, mostly because Jeremiah was a gardener and had planted a sapling as part of his vacation and - - no. He walked around the small clearing they were in, as much as he could, and looked to see if there was anything to see but nothing looked out of place. In fact everything looked normal and while normally that was reassuring, it just seemed odd to him. Jeremiah came to a stop and turned to look towards Finn. "There was one other thing I was going to tell you about, something that happened at Ashdown Fashion Week."

A few feet away, the first drop of rain fell. Finn fidgeted with his umbrella, but didn't see fit to open it. "Oh, yeah?" he asked. Finn hadn't made it to Fashion Week - he'd been working straight night shifts the whole week, and it wasn't like he was a very fashionable person. If Jeremiah ever met him outside of uniform, he'd see for himself. "What happened?"

Jeremiah tilted his head up when he felt a drop on his face. Unless it was hard rain he would not open his umbrella. Spending time in other ashdown made it where he did not care about a fine rain. "There was a humming that everyone could hear during part of it. Not really a bad tune but it was unnerving." He had looped back around to standing next to Finn and the path back. "A young man named Chester Poole apparently found the source of it. A red-headed young woman sitting at the fountain." His shoulder were rolled in attempt to ease some of the twinge he was feeling in his back. It did not help. "She had a message for him, one she wanted delivered." Jeremiah's expression went dark. He was frowning as he pulled out his notebook to glance it over once and then repeat what he had been told. " 'There is a ball in the eighth month. There they will find their quarry. There is where Adoelle is.'"

"August," said Finn quickly, without really having to think about it. Then he paused, considering. "But that's months away--" he said, and stopped himself, tried to grasp the broader implications. A woman. Someone who knew about the Otherworld. About Adoelle. But someone mysterious, someone with power, if everyone could hear her hum-- "Did anyone see where she went?" asked Finn. He had a bad feeling about this. So far, travel to the Otherworld had been a one-way street. What if that was changing?

"Just the young man saw her and when she disappeared on him, he went back to fashion week where he saw and approached me." If only because he was known around town and the case was still his - even if it was pushed to the side. "I get the feeling this is not usual. I know Sunny can go back and forth, that we can go there, but can things from there cross over?" Was it like them? They could seemingly go back and forth as long as they could find a way in and a way back. His hand rubbed at his neck, shoulders rolling again. The rain that was starting was not helping the ache in his back or the chill. "It just seems to add to the fact that there's more coming." That they had just saw the first part of the storm. It was calm now but soon ... Jeremiah was frowning at the thought.

Finn nodded, feeling a chill in his spine. He raised the umbrella off his shoulder, opening it - the rain was getting heavy enough to justify it now. "I'll ask Sunny about it," he said, turning back the way they'd come. "Definitely no mangroves out here. Let's head back." "So, uh," he asked, after maybe ten yards. "How long have you and the professor, been, uh-" He glanced at Jeremiah's hands, noted the bloodstone ring. "Married?"

Jeremiah did not even blink or think about the oddness of his umbrella. He just used it now, though it may only have come out because this was related to other ashdown and not work (he had another umbrella for normal things). He just nodded about asking Sunny, not really saying anything. It was still a touchy subject to think about. His steps slowed to a stop and blinked at Finn's question and then sighed. His thumb rubbed across the ring that Finn noticed, the detective had not ... It was not surprising but when they had swapped rings he had not even thought twice about what people would assume. "We're not married," Jeremiah responded. He started to walk again, eyes tilting towards Finn. Aleksy had had marks on him and he was looking for similar on the other man. "... it's more of a promise." To each other. "Marriage is for when you want everyone else in your business." The detective was snorting at that. Not because it was to deter Finn's question, just his opinion on the matter.

Finn, since Jeremiah was looking, had a large and very vivid hickey situated on the side of his neck, only partly obscured by his collar. "Oh," said Finn, nodding, which made the hickey fight to escape the confines of his shirt. "Yeah." Aleksy had made comments to more or less the same sentiment. He'd also said that if Finn ever got any mushy ideas about swearing their lives to each other, he would dump him like a sack of potatoes. Their relationship was... complicated. "How long have you been, uh." He reconsidered his phrasing. "Doing it in the butt."

Definitely just made that hickey more visible. Jeremiah's lips twitched a bit into a smirk but that faded the moment that ... The detective blinked slowly - again - and any motion to start walking once more stopped. His fingers stretched out around the handle of his umbrella and he let out a huff of breath, a near laugh, at what Finn was asking. Jeremiah smoothed his hand across his face. "I'm not quite sure what business it is of yours but ... I can assume there's some reason you are asking. If you mean how long have I liked men, it was never about that. I like who I like, it's simple as that." He snorted, looking at Finn seriously. "If you mean the sex part, then longer than you've been in this world." His head tilted to the side, eyes falling back to the hickey and then back to Finn's face. "Why do you ask?"

Finn turned beet red. For all that that question could have backfired, Jeremiah completely misinterpreting his intention had been the least of his worries. At least he hadn't taken offense. "I meant," he clarified, "with the professor. Specifically. Because I asked you how long you'd been married and you said you weren't but that's like, totally semantic. I should've been specific - how long have you been together?"

Jeremiah laughed. Mostly at himself. "Being specific does help." He turned his attention back towards the path and started to walk, even if the pace was a little slower because they were talking. "I've known Alg since forever but life and other things got in the way of a relationship." He snorted, again at himself. Part of the resistance had been their own issues but also feeling like everyone assumed things about them that were not the case. "For all that you and the rest of the town thought we were married or dating or whatever, this," the ring on his finger was twisted with a thumb, "a new development."

Finn raised an eyebrow, though he was turned away from Jeremiah. "So, like," he said, "It's been a long time coming? Congratulations. That's great." The trailhead came back into view. It was raining harder now, and Finn was looking forward to getting back indoors. "I'll ask Sunny about that thing," he said. "You need anything else while you're here? We're got a two for one deal on Cliff bars right now."

There was a brief rare sight and it would fade rapidly. Jeremiah's cheeks were the slightest bit red at the congratulations and he waved it off with a flick of his head. "Thanks." He tilted his head back a bit to look at Finn but let it go. He sincerely hoped that he was not looking for relationship advice. Jeremiah and Algie finally getting their acts together after thirty some odd years was proof he was the last person you talked to about relationships. "You can, I'm limiting my interactions with her." There was that twist in his chest. The mention of the bars got a snort of laughter from him. "No, no. I'm good but ..." Jeremiah was pulling out a card that had his personal number on the back of it and held it out to him. "You probably should have that just in case."
