Her eyes went to the water as well. Rajani had to admit she was not all that thrilled of the idea. But the man had a point. She could stick to the shallows. "It's not that I don't swim. I literally can't. I never learned how. Plus.. I'm afraid of deep water." The girl took a small step back away from the water. Oh, but to have access to fish! She could eat and she wouldn't have to steal from anyone! Rajani hated stealing. Sadly, other than begging in the streets, it was the only way she could get what she needed to stay alive. "My master used to dunk me in a big barrel of water when I was younger as punishment. So.. water and I don't get along." The feeling of drowning was agonizing. Rajani had never forgotten the burn of water in the lungs or how it felt to not have air.

Chalcedony gave a thoughtful sound before he said, "I see. Do you haven't learned how to swim." He mused, thinking on it for a moment before nodding. Yes, they would defintely have to do spear fishing then since that didn't involve her getting too deep into the water. He wanted her to be able to learn to fish though, it was a very important skill after all. One that he'd had to learn through trial and error back in the day. He moved to look around, seeking out a pair of sticks that were as straight as possible before he held one out ot her, "Here, if you want to use your knife to sharpen it?" As the girl started to explain her dislike of water and where it came from he gave pause, glancing over at her, then away again, "Ahhh... I see. I am sorry." He knew of the Obans and their old love of having slaves, he'd allowed himself to get captured by them, to get into one of their camps, to help some slaves escape. He knew what the Obans were like back then and what some of them might be like these days. As such he felt the desire to not push her too hard when it came to the water. "Once we get the spears ready we will fish from the banks so you don't have to get in the water." He told her reassuringly.

She watched the man as he searched for something only to be surprised when he picked a pair of sticks. Rajani reached out and took the one that had been offered to her. So the monk wanted her to sharpen the stick? With a shrug she started to do just that. It kept her busy and she missed him glancing at her when she explained things. Her head bobbed quietly but she said nothing. "You know, my master said that the fish in the rivers were related to the fish people that walk around. Is that true? If it is I don't think I can eat a fish.." Her eyes went toward the water as she thought about the idea. It would be like eating someone, wouldn't it?

Chalcedony set to sharpening his own weapon, getting it ready so that they would be able to spear some fish with the makeshift fishing weapons. Here was to hoping that they would be able to get themselves something good with the weapons. Of course just as he started to walk toward the water he heard her as a rather strange question, one that stopped Chalcedony dead in his tracks, "W-What?" He couldn't help but to stare at her, his mind racing. After a moment he realized that it was likely due to her master being Oban? He'd heard that they didn't think well of the Water Tribe after all. "Ahh... no... I've met with a member of that tribe in the past, well one of mixed blood at least, and I can tell you that she is the same as we are, that being an earthling." Well, sort of, he supposed that Masika had been half her mother's child as well. So she was half earthling, half Alkidike, but that didn't quite matter, did it? What mattered most was that she wasn't a fish. Glancing toward the river he said, "I am pretty certain there is nothing about them that connects them to fish other then perhaps a love of water?" At least he'd assume so given they were called the Water Tribe.

"Oh." She seemed to stare at the water for a bit more before she scrunched up her nose. "Are you sure? They have them ears.. the fin things." Rajani would have brought her hands up to show what she meant but both of them were full. When her stick was sharp enough she made her way closer to Chalcedony. As she passed into the light some markings would become visible on her face. They were faint but there. Alkidike markings. But just as Rajani turned her head to look down the river they were gone. Apparently they were only visible in just the right light at just the right angle. "What was she mixed with?" Now her curiosity was getting the better of her.

"Well, I think it's just part of being an Earthling, we all have our weird quirks. Like the Shifters changing colors for instance. Though I will admit that from what I've seen of them the Water Tribe is the most interesting and strange." He supposed that was what made them beautiful he thought to himself idly, giving a half shrug before stopping at the water. Giving the girl a glance before he looked back at the water again, "For now we need to keep our eyes open for any movement in the water, that will be the fish we are after." He said, then, in answer to her question he said, "Her mother was actually an Alkidike, so was quite an interesting mix for sure. It was a good sign though, that the Alkidike still around are open to the other tribes to that extent."

"Alkidike." Her hand went up to her face and she scratched at the place where her spots were. It was interesting to know that someone from her lineage had mixed with a.. What had the monk called them? Water tribe? Then again, she supposed he was right. It was a good sign. When she saw movement in the water she lit up and her hand went from her face to Chalcedony's arm. Rajani was tapping him, unaware that she had initiated physical contact, and staring wide eyed into the river. "Lookit! There! Right there!" Done with touching the man's arm she pointed to where she had seen the fish.

He nodded his head as she repeated the name of the tribe from up north before he turned his attention once more to watching the water before the girl was suddnely tapping his arm and pointing, sounding quite excited over something she'd seen. Turning his attention to where she was pointing he found a rather good sized fish making its way by them. It was one that many called a 'flat head' that was known to be in the area. It was good eating if you soaked the meat, though given the clarity of the water here that might not even be needed. That was a step that one only had to do if the water seemed murky and muddy since water like that made the fish taste muddy too. Turning to look over at the girl he said, "I will see about catching it for you. Just watch the way I do it so you can try on the next one we find." He turned back to the water, lifting up his makeshift spear, taking aim, and waited for the fish to get a bit closer before he thrust it forward. The spear was able to go through the fish's head and into the ground below, pinning the thrashing beast there. "Ah! Excellent! I will go in and get it. That will let us know how deep the water is as well." He said before he moved forward, stepping into the water so that he could take a few steps out to where the fish was pinned, reaching out hold of the fish by it's gills, pull the spear free, and set to work dragging it out of the water.

Those grey eyes were glued to what Chalcedony was doing. When the spear struck the fish she jumped up and down with excitement! "Yes! You got it! You speared the fish Da-- er... Monk." Rajani coughed and nodded her head when he said he would go into the water to get it. That saved her from having to go in after it. When Chal was bringing his fish up she was looking at the water searching for another fish. The girl was hoping that she could catch one and show the monk that she could do it too. At the first sign of movement she took the steps toward whatever it was and thrust her spear at it. Her aim wasn't as good as Chalcedony's however and she missed her mark. "Oh, darn.."

Chalcedony gave the girl a glance, wondering what it was that she almost called him before she referred to him as 'Monk' which had him blinking a couple times, "Monk?" He asked, thinking about it for a moment before he laughed, "Oh! I never introduced myself, did I? I do apologize for that, my name is Chalcedony, though if you'd like you can called me Chal if you would prefer that to 'Monk'." He saw no reason why she should have to call him by a title such as that one, especially when he wasn't sure where it had come from. He watched as the girl turned back to the river, finding a fish but missed her first shot at it. He gave a smile and said, "It's alright, it can take some practice since fish are quite speedy and the water can reflect things oddly and throw off one's aim. Just keep trying if you see more fish. If you need help dragging them out of the water just let me know." With that he got out his own knife and set to work cleaning and filleting out the big flat head that he'd gotten for the girl.

"Chalcie.. Chalice.." She tried to say his full name but encountered some issues so she nodded her head. "Chal it is." While she normally didn't like nicknames she couldn't help it this time. She couldn't get her tongue to cooperate. "I'm Rajani." The girl smiled. Knowing now that the water could distort the images of things she eyed the water. She knew she hated it for a reason. Rajani stepped to the edge of the water and leaned out so that she could grab her stick. Since it had pinned itself into the river bed she thought it would be easy enough to pull back out. Well she was wrong. In trying to pull it out of the bottom she ended up leaning out over the water a bit too far and was now a human plank hovering over the water. Her feet on the grass and her hands on the makeshift spear some feet out. And sadly she wasn't near the shallows. "Dad!!" The word left her in a panicked manner as she stared at the water beneath her and tried with all her might to get enough weight to put herself back on dry land.

"It's a bit of a complicated name, so yes, Chal is just fine." He said with a smile, continueing to work on the fish, getting it prepared for being cooked up. He was sure that she was probably still hungry since all she'd had to this point was some dried aldabuk and while it was quite good it might not be enough. He'd be sure to get the fish going so that she could eat it as well. A moment later though his attention was dragged away from the fish and over to the girl as she was suddenly crying out the word 'Dad' as she slipped, looking as though she might end up in the water. The fact that, as she found herself in trouble she called out for a parent that wasn't present, made his heart hurt. Not to mention it made him want nothing more then to step in and help her in the place of her missing parent. It was probably due partly to the fact that he had kids of his own, ones a bit older then her in fact, that made him want to help her. Even if he didn't though he was still the sort that would step in and do what he could for anyone that needed a hand. Pushing to his meet he moved toward the girl, reaching out with one hand to catch hold of her, hoping ot drag her back away from the edge of the water so that she didn't fall in. From the looks of the water, as well as the color, she'd found a deep pocket of water and he didn't want her falling in that if she didn't know how to swim, not when he didn't know how deep it might be, "Careful, Rajani. You don't know how deep it is there. Maybe you should fish in the shallows?"

She struggled, trying her hardest to get back up but was unable to on her own. Her center of mass was just too far over. As she noticed him reaching for her she flinched and gave a scream. "N-No! Don't touch me!" Rajani had more than one thing to panic about now. Tears collected in her eyes as she stared at the water beneath her then turned her head to look at Chalcedony. She had to pick one or the other. Which of the two was the lesser evil? Her tears turned into full on crying as she stared at the shifter through blurry eyes. "D-Dad.. I don't want to fall." Sniffling she took one hand away from the stick and reached for Chal. Rajani was still scared of being touched but if she fell in and he had to come get her she'd be touched anyways. At least this way she only had to face one fear and not two. "Don't hurt me. I didn't mean to get stuck. I swear I didn't mean to! I'll be good. I'll do whatever you want.."

Chalcedony gave a bit of a jump as the girl screamed at him not to touch her, something that he most certainly hadn't expected and it caused him to sort of freeze in place. He wanted to drag her away from the water but he didn't want to disrespect her wishes either... so what should he do then? A question that was given an answer as the flailing girl declared that she didn't want to fall, seeming to once more be talking to a parent that wasn't around. It made him curious what might have happened to the man... but it wasn't really his place to ask. Things seemed tense enough without him demanding such things from a girl who was already upset. Giving a nod of his head Chal said, "I wouldn't hurt you, I promise." He said before he moved to catch hold of her pulling her away from the edge, making sure that she was steady on her feet once more before he stepped back away from her, holding up his hands to show he wasn't going to do anything further then what he'd done. It seemed as though she had a phobia over not only the water but also the touch of another person, something that brought up old anger that Chal had toward the Obans. It was something he had to force down though. They were supposedly allies now with Oba and he couldn't really start fights with them ... unless of course somehow he actually ran into the man that had been so mean to Rajani. If that were to happen then he'd likely punch the man's head off his shoulders, "Do you want to sit down, Rajani? So that you can catch your breath?"

Once she was on sure footing and Chal let go she visibly shook. Her arms wrapped around herself and soon she was sinking to the ground. Rajani closed her eyes tightly as she tried to control the way she trembled. "I'll go to the shallows. I'll catch a fish. I promise. Just don't make me do anything bad." When the girl opened her eyes again she glanced up at Chalcedony, but this time there was utter fear in her expression. In her mind the man was huge! Much bigger than the Oban she'd served. Color seemed to drain from her as she stared.
