"What kind of services, and what kind of payment. We're not... we don't have a lot to trade," She tried to cover, very much picking up on the panic in Zac's eyes. At the very least, he realized they were ******** now. So that was good. He would only have to be like, one and a half times dead if they were killed by this thing. Autumn swallowed heavily.
"I don't have anything I want, either."

"But he does," said the thing. Zac could feel its breath, hot and smokey, on the back of his neck. "He wants something very much! Doesn't he."

A shudder ran through him, and he hated himself for it. Did that awful little ‘name’ define him now? He’d felt braver the last time… but maybe that was because he’d been ‘here’ for seven days without running into any…actual, THING. “Wanting, and trading are two different things… She asked a good question… maybe you should, let her out and, we can talk.”

They weren't winning any of this bargaining game. Even Autumn could see that. And the thing was behind Zac, in a position of power over the both of them.
"Just. Just tell it what you want, Zac," and there was a slight tremor in her voice, now. "I-it's okay. Just tell it,"
Autumn breathed. In, out. She wasn't going to flip s**t. She wasn't.

" Yes. She is brave. You can be too, Zac." The thing reached forward, and one invisible hand landed on Zac's shoulder. That touch hung over the lot of them like the Sword of Damocles.

He gave a small laugh that lacked any humor. "... I want to know how to save... someone I care about from having his heart ripped out." He said frowning. ".... but I'm not... I am not promising a deal." GOD he knew better than that, he knew well enough about just accepting from the person he was trying to save.

Of course. Autumn closed her eyes, biting her lip. That was information Autumn had no idea how to get her hands on... that. But the things here, they would. They knew magic. They knew the deals going around. She breathed in through her nose, out through her mouth.
She had nothing more to say.

The thing started to laugh. It laughed for a long time, long and loud, from the belly--as if it had one--and then it petered out in fits and starts, like a human being slowly getting themselves under control. " That? It's so easy. Give me your heart and I promise She will spare his."

“I…” He started; maybe she’d see it in his face, that moment when he actually considered that awful offer. Considered things like leaving her stranded here, considered tossing himself away because he valued something more, and that offer was there, like a drink of water to someone who was starting to feel the desperate pang of drought. His hands curled into fists, nails biting into his palms and his head bowed under the weight of thoughts that he could barely stand. “…. I…” He hesitated. “…. Can’t.” He said at last. “I can’t… He’d just… He’d just do something –STUPID- again.” He said it like a curse. But there was more to that word than just anger. It was frustration because god-HELP him he wanted to do it. But all he’d do would be to make some… unholy chain he was half sure of it. The road to Hell itself… paved with good intentions. “I can’t… I won’t. Someone else would end up with it… NO. No… I’ll find another way.”

The thing's odd lilt faded, and instead it was a crisp, cold, accented voice that spoke next: "On your own head be it, dear boy." A figure composed of smoking coals reached out and cupped Autumn's face in its hands. For a moment, its touch was harmless, like the kiss of a cool pillow on a hot night. Then it began to burn--not Autumn's flesh, oh no--it burned down in her chest, her stomach, each rib igniting in a spasm of choking pain. "If you won't act to save him, maybe you will to save her." It turned to Zac, large and looming and pitch black. " Get her out if you can." endejester Once Zac leaves the otherworld, he will forget how he got out. Moonstone Dazzle Autumn is afflicted with a burning pain in her chest (though she is not actually on fire in any way). This pain makes it difficult for her to breathe and even harder for her to walk. There was smoke caressing her face, and for a moment, it was almost pleasant. But then, there was pain- searing, growing pain from her gut to her chest and her heart, and oh god. God. She couldn't breathe. Somewhere in her mind, Autumn knew she had to be getting air in and out of her lungs. But it burned, and it burned, and it wouldn't stop burning. The world was blurring around her, and she was so, so tired. Inhaleexhaleinhaleexhale. She wheezed pitifully, and desperately rubbed at her throat, trying to will more air into her lungs. But it only seemed to burn more. The sob of pain that tried to escape her throat died, sad and pitiful, as little more than a strangled exhale. Her stomach churned, and God, she was going to die. Pax was right all along.
She had just... Hoped it wouldn't be so soon.
With what little strength she had left, Autumn desperately tried to grab for Zac. She needed a friend, God. God she didn't want to die alone. Her trembling hand missed his arm as Autumn mouthed 'help', and collapsed to the ground.
Don't let her die, God. Please. Not like this. endejester Get her to a hospital, mang

“What are you….” He wanted to ask, to demand to know why it was touching her. On your own head be it? “n..NO!” He lunged, reaching, trying to catch her. “WHAT DID YOU DO?!” he demanded, but it was already gone. She reached for him and he missed her. He knelt down, hands hovering at her afraid to make it worse. “Nononono… Autumn!” He said panicked. This was his fault…his FAULT. He’d just wanted to be braver like she’d been… talk to things he didn’t think could be talked to. He had weighed the deal out and found it wanting and he had still… failed. His breathing was too fast, but he was processing at least. He struggled but managed to lift her. Dragging her into a carry. “I got you… I got you.” He promised. But he was already afraid he’d fail. Grey – grey was an emotion that crept in at the corners “I got you… I’ve got you. I’m getting you out of here.” He whispered.. -- How he got out, that he could not remember. He attributed it to stress, to focus. His knees were shaking and he’d stumbled a handful of times. But he got her out of Ashdown. They even ended up close enough to the hospital that he carried her in. He really didn’t want questioned, he wanted to crawl into a shell, to become one with a wall…. And somehow fortune favored him. He didn’t question it, not at first. There were enough phone calls, other accidents; kids who had bleeding knees or things stuffed up their nose. Enough people that combined with the young woman he’d dragged in he thought, at first, that it was not unreasonable that they bypassed him. He wanted to see if she was ok. But he also wanted to crawl into a hole. He found a seat, and no one so much as glanced at him. He wondered who, if ANYONE he trusted to notify.
