"Oh, one of Those ones," said the bird self-importantly. "A Shade."

It blinked its beady eyes, though it's positioned so Rabbit can't see it so I guess that's kind of a pointless thing to share. "You gotta help," it squawked, "We gotta go to the Big Nest. We gotta help!"

(It probably meant Town Hall.)

Rabbit didn't know it meant Town Hall. Luckily, he was headed in that direction anyway, so when he shrugged and broke back into something faster than a walk, he was going the right way.

"A Shade. Yeah." Clop, clop, clop. "Wait. Do you get a lot of our dead people wandering around here?" Yet another reason not to come back. Not that his desire to stay away had helped in this instance.

"No," said the bird. "Just the ones She dreams of."

It flung out a wing, bonking its feathers against Rabbit's head as they approached Town Hall. "Oh no," it moaned. "Too late!"

The building was covered in... squirming... black things. It undulated like the sea, like some awful living thing, steady as a heartbeat. "We have to go get the eggs," the bird said. "Before it spreads any further!"

He slowed to a stop as a result of the bonking and stayed still once he'd noticed the mess that was the Town Hall. The Big Nest.

"What is that crap? Are they your eggs?" He supposed it wasn't important. A stalling tactic because... what the ********. He exhaled a sigh through his nose. "Forget I asked. Okay. Show me where they are and I'll see. I probably shouldn't touch that stuff, right?" He couldn't see how he was going to avoid it.

"It'll stain you 'cause you're only part from here, but it'll eat the eggs entirely!" The bird took flight, describing tight circles several feet above Rabbit's head. Its frenzied flapping echoed its voice oddly. "Please!! Hurry!! Follow me!!"

The bird dove through an open space between black goo-monsters. They began to roll faster, reacting to its presence.

POINT OF NO RETURN: Does Rabbit leave? Or does he follow?
PostPosted: Thu Apr 21, 2016 10:18 pm

"Fuuuuuuck," Rabbit whispered under his breath, lowering into a crouch and scrubbing his hands back and forth over his skull as he waited for his breathing to even out completely. He'd been ready to follow before the word stain had entered the conversation, but now he felt the same prickle of contradiction that had plagued him the first time he'd found himself here. The stubborn anger that insisted he stay out of all of this, if only because he hadn't asked to come in the first place.

He looked up at the building, brows furrowed with distaste.

What would Autumn do?

What would Olivia do?

They would help, and so would he. He still didn't think he could get out of this place by himself anyway.

Pushing his fingers against the ground and creaking upright once more, Rabbit followed the bird at a walk. He had a feeling he might be needing to run again before too much longer and he didn't want to waste the energy until it was necessary.

Once Rabbit entered the strange building that had replaced Town Hall, he would note three things.

Firstly, the black things covered only the walls here. Where the wall met the floor there were varicose things that extended into the cracks between tiles, but no further. It was quite possible for Rabbit to pass over them if he watched where he stepped.

Secondly, the room normally had two exits: right and left. The right hall would usually lead to the DMV, and the left to the mayoral offices and courtroom. Now there were three doors, one to the right, one to the left, and one straight ahead. The right door was open, and beyond it there was a burning light. The left door was open just a crack, but beyond it seemed black as pitch. The door in front is closed, but the key is in the lock.

Thirdly, the bird lies still on the ground in the grasp of several tendrils of black vein.

It was fairly obvious which door the bird meant to go through. However, with his opposable thumbs, Rabbit has options the bird did not... one of which is to leave...

If he turns to look, though, the way out has been subsumed by the black fleshy... stuff.

Looks like the only way out is forward.

As soon as he saw the motionless bird, Rabbit hurried to its side, stopping just before he touched the tendrils that held it. Then he touched them anyway, but only with the toe of his shoe.

"Get off," he muttered, kicking demurely at the goo once, twice, then stepping away again as he turned to look back at the door he had entered through. He didn't want to leave the creature if he didn't have to, but whatever this stain was, he didn't want that either.

The goo did not respond to Rabbit's entreaties. Instead, it seemed to draw energy from being nudged, and began to do... whatever it was doing... to the bird even faster.

"The eggs," the bird croaked. "The eggs..."

Then it was gone beneath the squirming stuff.

He winced as the bird was swallowed up, unwilling to watch as it went under completely. Instead, his feet seemed to pull him toward the DMV, a place he despised in normal Ashdown but that seemed safest here, even if the light it was exuding was almost too strong to stand. It was easy to convince himself that Sleepyhead couldn't have gotten through the darkened door without help, and it certainly couldn't have managed that weird locked one, which left the right as the only choice. Careful not to step on any more of the tendrils, Rabbit stumbled on.

Rabbit went to the right, towards the blinding light.

Pros of this choice: The black stuff couldn't seem to stand the light. As it grew stronger, the stuff grew thinner on the walls until it was almost entirely gone. Where it remained was within sharp-edged shadows, carefully self-contained. Whatever 'stain' the bird had been concerned about was likely no danger here.

Cons of this choice: The light was really ******** bright, and it was nearly impossible to see because of it. It didn't gain much temperature as Rabbit approached, which was odd, especially since the entire hall smelled strongly of smoke.

At the end of the hall, in the middle of the waiting room, was a man who appeared to be actively on fire. Despite the blinding brightness, he is easily spotted, the easiest thing in the room to look at. He hadn't yet noticed Rabbit, engrossed in whatever chore he was doing, but that could change.

His eyes watered a bit as he continued, but even through the barest slits, he could still make out the man on fire. Rabbit stopped again, not because he was debating the extent of his charity or trying to help the helpless, but because he was genuinely afraid. Unlike when Pax had turned on that cop, he didn't have the luxury of getting lost in the crowd. If he wasn't careful, he would be the only one here to draw this guy's attention. The flames might have been driving off the killer tentacles, but Rabbit wasn't a huge fan of this much fire in any circumstance, let alone when it was immolating someone.

Holding back a cough and bringing the collar of his t-shirt up to cover his nose and mouth, he tried to see what the man was doing without drawing his gaze.

The man held an egg in his hands, and was turning it between his palms. It was far too massive to have been laid by the bird who had awoken Rabbit in the bar, and yet... the bird had requested Rabbit's help. It could be one of the eggs.

The man hadn't yet noticed Rabbit.

It was one of the eggs, Rabbit was sure of it. He was also unwilling to let whoever this guy was have it. What he wasn't sure of was how he was going to get it, only that any plan would require him to be closer than he was. Reluctantly, he moved forward, trying to stifle his next cough with his hand. He failed.

It was a low puff of air, more a clearing of his throat than a proper cough, but it was the definitely the loudest sound he had made since entering the room.

The man looked up. His face was... not unfamiliar... but certainly not one that Rabbit could have named. "My dear boy, it is so rude to sneak," said the burning man. He stopped examining the egg and turned to face Rabbit, insomuch as his head was literally on actual fire and thus his face was basically only discernible by guessing based on where his jaw kinda seemed to be.

"What is it you've come here for," he asked, his genteel tenor quite loud over the crackling of the... it was probably once his skin.
