Zac grimaced, remembering the foot. It was.. it was VERY different to see an actual foot from what you saw in things like the movies. His expression said he really couldn’t fault anyone for puking, but he felt like everything that had happened was well…

A little greyed out like it wasn’t entirely real.

Quite possibly it was something like shock, but he didn’t want to admit that, not when he was trying to be adult.

“…Yeah…I kind of wanted to him… send some flowers.” He admitted.

“And if you tease me about that I swear I will END you.” He threatened, before realizing the maturity level of that statement was approximately… zero.

“But, yeah um… I don’t blame him for being a bit um…” He waved his hand. “Yeahhhhhh…. I’m amazed more of us didn’t to be honest but.”

Jeremiah snorted. "Why would I tease you, Zac? Even I have sent flowers to people." For various reasons. "I have to get him something anyway." For all the s**t Aleksy had to go through in regards to him being missing. "In part because of what he went through but also because ..." A snort. "He is not a fan of the police and was questioned after I disappeared."

The camaraderie with Aleksy was hard-won and mostly because they were both grumpy, ornery faces.

"I think most people were just in shock. With the ice and ..." Jeremiah paused, thinking back to Pax and the ice and then the cold fire. His back ached, not just in memory but because that pain was still there. "The fire, Zac. That I was surrounded by, it left some burns on my back."

Which judging by the serious look on his face there was more to it.

Zac was, in a word, rigid, there was a look on his face that was somewhere between dangerous and ‘worst fears confirmed’.

There was also more than a little self-judgment, things he hadn’t thought of, things he’d been too made to wonder at or focus on.

“Jes….why didn’t you… “ he stopped himself, trying to crush the frustration before it got carried away and then said. “How bad…and what are you not saying?”

"I am telling you now, in person, because you need to know." Jeremiah would have mentioned it earlier but he had been distracted with the rest of the conversation and Zac leaving. He would also leave off that it was serious because with the threat of heart eating over his head, this was just another reminder.

"It only scorched the leg hair off my leg but ..." He moved to rub his hand at the side of his neck but instead met white fur and rubbed Mogget instead. "I am telling you all of it." Jeremiah was not leaving out details, not anymore. "It's mostly along the middle of my back," along his spine and nothing that required going to the hospital or he would have been dragged there by Algie already, "and it's a cold burn." That was why Jeremiah was bundled up.

"... but it's cold, Zac. Actual cold. Algie touched it and left a chill to his hand."

Zac’s face was a contortion of worry. “… have you tried putting like… a hot water bottle on it?” He said with a worried expression. “I mean…are we dealing with frost bite here or…nerve damage or….” He shook his head trying to process this information.

It had been FIRE.. it had been FIRE – but it was…cold.

“… god…that makes me wonder about that Ice in Heliodora. I mean… what if, what if that was a patch job, like… did something ELSE did that or are did Pax put that there to like keep her from bleeding or…

He frowned slightly and shook his head. “Or are we doing some kind of fairy tale bullshit where her heart is replaced like…that whole snow queen thing and ice chips and things.”

He stopped, shook his hands and made an inarticulate sound.

“But no… screw Other Ashdown for right now, how BAD is it? Did you take it to a doctor? I mean I KNOW they would flip their s**t but still.”

"A hot shower helped and the layers of clothing somewhat." Jeremiah's hand still rested against Mogget, hand smoothing across his fur. "It's more ... a perpetual cold feeling besides the pain of the burns?"

With his guard down, not minding his facial expressions, it was easy to see the pinched look to his face - even with the black eyes. "I honestly don't know, I'd prefer to think that my heart isn't being turned cold." Not on top of everything else because if they were talking Snow Queen then he wouldn't ... Jeremiah was not thinking about that. "... and that's a good question about her ice. Perhaps something to look into later."

He straightened up some, his shoulders rolling a little but not much because he did not want to pull the bandaging more than it already was. "Mostly first and second degree burns, but it's ..." Jeremiah did not even really mind Mogget being on his shoulders grooming him because he was a source of warmth. "It doesn't look right at all regardless. Not like normal burns. Algie tended it for me." A wry grin was given. "He actually keeps a rather well stocked first aid selection."

“I’m mad I didn’t ask if you got… I’m not sure burned is the word to use here honestly but….” He exhaled in growing frustration. Why was it that it felt SO MUCH like Jeremiah was somehow as pivotal to everything ‘magical’ as Heliodora was, or at least like he was their target for ultimate obliteration.

If you had to ask him in that moment between his ‘Detective-Dad’s’ tendency to find the closest other-worldly danger and head strait for it, and the other-worlds apparently tendency to gleefully oblige him he had this feeling in is gut that he’d be either missing his ‘Dad’ in perhaps a handful of months, or… be missing some PART of his father, depending on if his actual heart got removed or if some other part of him just got replaced by a fiery-popsicle.

“If I thought that there was any way to get those kids back that didn’t involve you loosing your heart I swear… Because what if that’s permanent!? What if you end up like –her- and No…Heliodora is the one I thought might be a little Snow Queen on us… if you end up turning into a popsicle I….Ugh!” He tossed his hands up and shook his head.

He hated letting his emotions run like this, it just made him feel childish.

“Screw it… I swear on some level this… toss yourself into danger must be appealing.” He said with the intonations of someone who was treating this statement like a swear rather than a sentence. He zipped his duffle, he could come back if he needed more things, and right now he was back to full blown. I need space.

More or less… he could already feel his shoulders sagging with tired.

“Right… Let’s get this over with.” He sighed. “I’m, really tired and if you can’t tell I still hate everything magical right now.”

"Zac, I will be fine. If anything changes, if it gets worse, if there is anything, I will tell you." Jeremiah finally stepped the last bit of distance and put a hand on Zac's shoulder as it sagged, it was what he had wanted to do since he had gotten here. This was the only thing he could do because what he wanted to do wasn't really an option - not with Zac like this.

It was his own fault.

"You're probably right about that." The tossing himself into danger. "A holdover from when I was your age and doing so much worse than this." Even with the magic involved and all of this, what he did when he had been young had been far more reckless and possibly life-ending.

"However I am ..." These were hard words to get out. "I love you, Zac, you are my son." This needed to be said even if it had been said before. "I will do my best to limit the stupid detective dad things and not get myself in any deeper than I already am." Which was deep - he wasn't sure he could get deeper. "As well as let you know everything that happens, alright? Also give you the space you need."

It probably was not enough but with space and time, perhaps it would be.

"So let's get to the department so you can have that."

“Yeah…” Zac nodded “I um… you know I…” He stammered. Teens… and the L word, sometimes even late age teens had a little of a hard time with it. “… I care about you a lot… I … Love you like… You ARE my Dad… ok? I mean it’s not ‘legally’ true or any crap like that, but you ARE my Dad. You just ARE.” He huffed.

“And I know the ‘Detective’ part is just as much a part of you as the Dad part, but DAMNIT I’m selfish… okay?” He rubbed his eyes with the butt of his hand.

“…so yeah, I’ll be back. But maybe it runs in the family… the urge to run away, but I WILL be back.” he said firmly before nodding.

Yes…

Yes it was time to head to the station.

Jeremiah bit the inside of his cheek at the running away. Perhaps because it was applicable to both of the fathers that Zac had. More than he cared to admit. Except that Jeremiah was working on not being that kind of man.

Not anymore. Nor had he any desires to continue doing so.

"I know you will," Jeremiah squeezed Zac and butted his head lightly against Mogget so that he would slip from his shoulders to his son's. "... and even if you move out, this is your home." No matter what as there was something in him that felt he needed to stress. He leaned a moment, his chin resting on Zac's head with one last firm hug.

"Let's go," he said, as he released Zac. "Sooner we're done, sooner we can rest and get some answers."

Zac stared for a moment at Jeremiah, like there might have been something more he wanted to say, but it seemed there were no words for it, or if there had been that they were lost.
At last, he nodded, a small almost sad gesture, but determined all the same.

"Thanks."

And maybe that was all the more they needed to say at this time.
