"It doesn't," said Fritz, with a shake of his head. He couldn't make himself repeat what the Code had told him; it felt too private, too connected to everything that had happened to him, the words catching in his throat as he wrapped both hands around his warm cup of tea. "It makes little sense, and it's been creating a lot of issues."
He broke off another piece of his biscotti and popped it into his mouth, chewing slowly, thoughtfully. "I believe there have been instances of people attempting to talk to the Code, but the answers remain the same. It's difficult to grasp that this is all we are capable of getting; the Code has been kind to us before, it should not be reprimanding us now, when we need it the most."
When I needed it, it failed me, he thought, but pushed this disparaging thought aside. Gwen did not need to hear of his problems, and he was not here to make her feel as though she was incapable. Fritz took a breath, inhaling some of the steam from his drink, and offered her a tired smile.
"It's no matter, I just wish I had more answers to give you," he said truthfully. "I don't want you to believe that the knights are merely a cluster of inadequacies. We are entirely capable of becoming more than what the Code says...which, again, rather sounds like a speech from a political rally, but there you have it."
He took a sip of his tea, feeling the warm liquid soothing his throat.
"Have you met any of the other knights?" Fritz asked. "You are of Earth, right?"

Listening to Fritz, it was apparent that whatever was going on with the Code was not something that she was going to find an answer for tonight. She'd have to continue on hoping that she didn't have another dream where the Code felt the need to batter her down anymore. It certainly helped knowing she wasn't the only one experiencing this problem though so if another dream occurred she'd be better prepared. At the mention of other Knight Gwen shrugged slightly before taking another sip of her coffee. "I've only met one other but she was about as new as I am. Otherwise I've not met any other Knights really." It was interesting to her considering she assumed there had to be several other Knights out there. "And yes. I am of Earth." She smiled softly. "So, is there like, a way I can meet other Knights? Is there a meeting of sorts that occurs and I've not heard about?" Gwen really wasn't sure how tight knight the Knight community was but surely they got together periodically, right? "Or is there some other way I can meet others? I'd certainly like to. I feel like I could learn a lot more and possibly be a bit more useful." She cupped her drink thoughtfully, enjoying the spread of warmth on her hands as she relaxed in the plush chair. I'll need to frequent this place a bit more. I never sat and relaxed here but it's very nice.Kuropeco Sorry this took so long! crying

He knew what it felt like to have so little answers, confusion and frustration reigning while attempting to sort everything out. Fritz had been new, once, and it felt like so long ago that he had seen that golden coin in the midst of the Surrounding, a battle raging around him. So long ago that he had closed his fingers around it as Fritz St. James and had awoken as Celsus of Chronos.
"Earth is a very admirable and respectful alliance that I have always found to be very kind," said Celsus, with a little smile. "I am glad to add another to that list."
He took a deep breath, inhaling the warm, steamy air of his tea. At Gwen's question, he considered a moment, absently running the fingers of his good hand over his violently pink cast, tracing the little edges and grooves without looking at them.
"There have been a few meetings, especially more recently," said Fritz. "When we don't have meetings, we meet through others, usually; I know a few knights that you perhaps could benefit from meeting, or vice versa. I believe, however, that having regular meetings could be a benefit to us all; a rather nice idea."
He smiled across the table at her.
"We all have things we could learn from one another, regardless of how long we've been knights."

Gwen returned Fritz's smile with one of her own. "Well I am glad that any other Earth Knight you've met have been pleasant." she chuckled. "I have to admit, I have my moments where I can get a bit testy, but for the most part I am nice." She chuckled softly before taking a sip of her coffee, relishing the taste and the warmth that the liquid brought. At the mention of a lack of meetings, Gwen raised her brows slightly and peered over her cup. Taking another drink of the hot liquid she listened to Fritz before finally lowering the cup to rest comfortably cupped nestled between her hands and lap. "I have to admit I am somewhat surprised there aren't at least some sort of set meetings, even if they only happen a few times in a year. Keeping up with others through some sort of twisted game of telephone doesn't seem like the most practical way to stay in touch." She shrugged. "I certainly would be interested in meeting anyone you could toss my way, though. The more the merrier in my book. I'd rather have more friends and people I can rely on out there if I am going to keep up with this new crazy life I've been sucked into." She sat there, reclining in her chair, eyes wandering over Fritz. Truthfully, the two of them could easily be mistaken for siblings as they sat there nursing their drinks and chatting. Of course there were differences in facial structures and builds but to anyone casually passing by, siblings would probably be at the forefront of their mind. Gwen on the other hand, was thinking about the fact that she found herself in the presence of a man who was very much her senior in the sense of experience and was feeling more worried for Fritz than wanting to sit and pick his brain more Sure, he was, for the most part, completely fine but the poor man looked beat in more ways than one. Whether it was from healing injuries, stress about Knight problems, or about other things Gwen wasn't sure. Hell, it could have been a collection of them all together. Still, she was enjoying the peaceful and enlightening conversation even if she wasn't getting a ton of concrete information. "Do you happen to have a pen on you?" She questioned knowing a bag laid near the mans feet but was unsure what it actually housed.

"I've dealt with my fair share of testy before, it's of no matter," said Fritz with a laugh, thinking somewhat ruefully of Hitch. "My brother's fiance is the very standard definition of 'testy,' and I've grown used to it with him, I think - even if he can be a pest sometimes," he added, with a playful wink at Gwen.
He could hardly disagree with the sentiment about having no regular meetings. Fritz ran a hand over the top of his cup, feeling the steam seeping into his palm before he said, "Yes, there is a bit of a disconnect in communication that has been known to make things rather difficult. It would be nice if there was a solution for this, but it can be hard."
A laugh escaped him, Fritz taking another swallow of tea. "It is a mad life, but there are moments that can make it worthwhile - and moments that can make it a struggle," he admitted, resting his arms on the table, hands wrapped around his cup. "Having people to rely on makes those moments infinitely more bearable, though."
The shop around them was a quiet babble of voices, the his of steamers, the scent of coffee wafting through. It felt comfortable, the atmosphere relaxed in spite of the conversation; which, to anyone who was not powered, would find particularly confusing and peculiar.
Gwen's question made him raise a brow. "I do," said Fritz, smiling, and bent down, rummaging in his bag for a moment with his good hand before straightening with one, holding it out to here. "Here."

A solution to a lack of communication was never really easy to find. You always had people who scoffed at the idea of getting together to talk or some who much preferred to be by their lonesome. Sure, some people getting together to discuss things was better than nothing but unfortunately such events don't always work either thanks to differing schedules. Gwen was pretty damn sure that there had to be quite a lot of people with lives that wouldn't be conducive to a regularly scheduled meeting. Plus, where would they all meet? It would have to be somewhere they wouldn't be noticed which was difficult. So many people in one spot would surely spark curiosity form any negas considering the abundance of signatures. "Well, maybe it's something to think about. I am sure if we put our heads together something could be figured out." She said hopefully. "The more we can get together the better off we would all be. Plus I think it would help newbies not feel so segregated and lost. If we're going to be stuck in this mad life we might as well make the most of it." She winked before taking another sip of her tea. Gwen watched Fritz as he fished around in his bag to a pen. When it was produced she smiled, placed her coffee on the table and relieved him of the small tool. "Perfect! Thanks!" Nabbing a napkin from the napkin dispenser on the table, Gwen jotted down her name along with her phone number. Laying the pen on top of the napkin she pushed it towards Fritz. "That's my cell number." She smiled. "If you need anything feel free to give me a call! Also, if you know of someone you think I should meet you can give it to them. Just tell them, if they text me, to say they know you otherwise I'll be lost on who they are and how they got my number." She chuckled. kuropeco At this point, she hasn't gotten her signet ring yet so cell phone is her only means of communication.

Communication was an obstacle that the knights seemed yet to overcome, and frustratingly so. There was so much they could do together, and yet whenever gathered, had a habit of devolving situations into arguments and confusion, each wanting their voice heard over the others.
It was disheartening, but Fritz had learned what it felt like to walk away from the knights, and he was not about to do so now, not when they had all come so far. They could be great together; they could be wonderful, and he wanted desperately to see them all thrive.
"We will figure something out," said Fritz now, firmly, with a smile to Gwen. "I think it's incredibly important, especially for new knights, to know that they aren't lost and alone. And yes, that is an excellent sentiment," he added, his eyes crinkling a little at the corners. "We're all in this together, aren't we? We should make the most of it."
He sipped at his now lukewarm tea while Gwen wrote, curiosity on his face - but it became clear a moment later when she slid the napkin back to him what she was doing. A laugh escaped him, and Fritz reached for a napkin of his own.
"Duly noted," he said, picking up the pen with his right hand. It felt awkward trying to write with his non dominant hand; it was painstakingly slow and slightly embarrassing, his cheeks coloring faintly, but finally he was able to lean back. He pushed the napkin towards Gwen.
"And my number," said Fritz. "Just in case you need to talk to me about anything, or nothing at all, whether it's about knight things or the weather."

Gwen slid the proffered napkin the rest of the way to her and gave the painstakingly written scrawl a quick glance over. With precise care she folded the flimsy paper and leaned forward in her seat so she could tuck it into her back pants pocket where it would safely make its way back to her apartment by nights end. A night, in fact, she should probably start patrolling on or she'd be up later than usual. And Gwen was a girl who very much enjoyed her beauty sleep. "Thank you." She smiled warmly as she leaned forward on the table. "Unfortunately I should probably get going. I had intended to complete a full circuit tonight before going to bed and I can hear my bed calling to me from here already." Chuckling she pushed herself away from the table and stood up. Her coffee held securely in her hand as she had all intentions of finishing the cup before powering up. I'll need to find a safer place to do that. She mused, remembering the gentle chastisement she had received from Fritz. "I really appreciate the insight you gave me. At least I know I am probably not the only one feeling out of the loop. I'll just make it a point to build up more connections so I can try and stay on top of things. It certainly wouldn't hurt." "Anyway, I really hope everything continues to go well for you and your purified friend. Seriously, if you need me for anything, don't be afraid to call." With a parting smile, Gwen turned and made her way out of the cafe leaving it and Fritz behind her as she began her search for a safe place to power up while drinking down the remains of her coffee.
