Aleksy upended the pot. Coffee, hot and black, poured out onto the table. He held it there to make his point, and then returned it to the percolator. With a rag in hand, he took his seat back. "If you see her too often, the world will start changing around you," he said, wiping up the coffee. "I can tell when people have seen her, or been to the other place. I am never out of coffee." He tossed the rag over into the bucket it came from. "Any questions?"

It was another one of those moments, another moment he did not jump. Jeremiah's eye did twitch and he smoothed a hand across his face. The detective looked more tired and with a deep breath, reigned it back in.
"So that's how you know I've seen her?" Jeremiah looked different to Aleksy somehow? Or was it just a sixth sense? He didn't really want to know, not really. The sarcastic side of him was rearing it's head. "At least you'll never be without a cup of coffee." He sighed after saying that.
"No questions at the moment, it's ..." A lot to process, he was still processing. Jeremiah was not sure that he liked the idea that something about him had already changed. "I also do not think I've much of a choice in this. I made a promise and I rather like my heart in my chest."

"I always know," said Aleksy. "At least you still look human. You don't want to know what she looks like to me." He ruffled the hair at the nape of his neck, sighing. "I don't think she would eat your heart," he said. "I've never seen her eat anything. I'm not even sure she can." But that was besides the point. "She would enforce the... contract. Unfortunate."

"I imagine too many teeth is probably better than what you see." Jeremiah did not want to know. Did not want to really accept what he had seen but here he was doing so. If Algie had not seen her, seen her disappear, he likely would have checked himself in somewhere.
"It is what it is. I wanted information about the missing kids and I got that and ..." A disgruntled, annoyed hand flick. The blood tide, the way her eyes at gleamed inhumanly. "I promised I would bring them back," a different start, "and she showed me the other place because that's suppose to help me."
His lips thinned together. Share their fate. They were more like Sunny now. So he had to ... Jeremiah frowned. It was not a good thought.

"She didn't do that to help you," said Aleksy. "She did that because she gets off on making people afraid." Though if Jeremiah wanted to assign altruistic motivation to something that was probably more than human, Aleksy wasn't going to fight him too terribly hard. "I hope that's a straightforward promise," he continued, "but I doubt it." He had been raised on Russian mythology, stories of people making unwise deals, and so he had always avoided giving Sunny any kind of foothold on his soul; but others were less lucky, or less superstitious, or... something. "If the children are in the other place, then... I don't think anything could survive there long. Not without becoming something less than human."

Jeremiah did not think for a moment that it was helping him, that Sunny was playing at something and he was not sure what it was. He was not even sure if the sadness, the regret was real. His own desires to help, to do what was right, had put him into a situation that he was out of his depth.
This was starting to be like one of Algie's novels.
"I doubt it as well." A hand rubbed against the side of his neck. "They're more like her than us now. She said that." To Algie but he was keeping that to himself. "The other place ..." His eyes focused on Aleksy. "It's here, isn't it?" Another reality over this one or under this one or something because that's what he had decided. Jeremiah had only seen it, not been.

Aleksy nodded. "It's here. Once you start to develop powers, you can end up in it at any time. Like... stepping from one room into another." But, like, without the courtesy of a doorway to let you know what you were doing. "The problem is finding a way out," he said. "The only person who can do it without fail is my boyfriend. With a month, I'm sure it could be done, so the children must be... somehow detained."

Powers. Bloody hell. Jeremiah snorted then, moving on and trying to not think about empty coffee pots (he failed). "So I was not entirely off when I thought about walking the town like the rumors?" It was a stupid idea and he really had not but he was all over Ashdown with work.
"They're trapped, I think. Started talking with Sunny, asking questions, and then got pulled into all of this." His lips twitched, something of an ornery annoyed look. "My thoughts that they had just disappeared into thin air were not that far off it seems."

Aleksy nodded, but his forehead was creased with a frown, lips pressed thin. "You don't want to go there," he said. "Even to find them. You'll just get stuck, too."

"Even if it's not my heart, it's something," the promise, "and that means I have to bring them back." Jeremiah raked a hand through his hair, fingers pushing the bangs back. The barber, today. He might as well. Something of a trim was in order.
"Which involves going there." He focused on Aleksy, a grim smile on his face. Another one of those looks that would have given most pause. "... and may involve ..." His hand waved towards the table, the smell of coffee still in the air. "I got myself involved, I'll have to deal with the consequences."

Aleksy shook his head more emphatically. "Going in there alone is asking to get dead," he said. "Which benefits no one. I'm sure that that would count as breaking your promise for Sunny's purposes, too." Probably she'd eat his dead heart just as willingly as his live one, if that was a thing.

"I've no plan on trying to get myself killed." Alone was a different matter but he was not going to discuss that. Jeremiah had a protective streak that was probably as wide as the ocean was deep. "Also likely true. I just don't like feeling like I'm on the end of someone else's puppet strings but something will have to be done. If they can be saved, they shouldn't be left there."
Jeremiah sighed, running a hand along his jaw and then resting his his chin in it. "It also may not matter. She did say that after three days of rain the fog would come. I would see it for true then."

******** you start having shittier dreams than usual, come talk to me," said Aleksy, crossing his arms and slouching still further into his chair. "'Cause if you're going to see it for true then you're going to be like me. And I'd rather no one else have to deal with this s**t alone, like I did."

Jeremiah opened his mouth, then closed it and frowned. His hand spread across the bottom half of his face, obscuring it from view. He might have even growled something out. The detective was quiet for a moment before he merely sighed.
His dreams were shitty already, had been since he had seen Sunny.
"Well," he said, that sarcastic tone was back, "apparently I knew where to come instinctively. My dreams have been shittier since the night I saw her." It was why he looked like he needed a good night's sleep, why there were faint circles under his eyes. Not because he was staying up to work, to research, but because he wasn't resting properly. His dreams were terrible.

"What have you been dreaming about," Aleksy asked, because: there was a difference between nightmares and Ashdown-dreams. He couldn't articulate it, but the change was clear.
