He thought he saw the Death trainee's red scarf in the haze. Or was that blood being spilled from his mother's throat from where he'd-- < Focus. >Dawson flinched nevertheless, only barely able to smack a twisted claw off Melvin. The man was muttering to himself like it was a mantra; he could catch the gist of it and found himself tensing. One lost to the fog, another fighting back memories, and now he had the macabre faces of his family to deal with. The old instinct to call it all off and pendant out rose for a moment. Somehow, it was worse than his previous mission in the U.S. "Stay with me, Melvin," he tried to assure. "You right, not her. You doin' a great job now." Louder, he yelled to where he thought he had seen that scarf, "Al! Gah-dammit, boy, you there?" HP: 50 Defending Melvin for: 5 Charge: 2/3 Runic Stone Charge: 2/5 BOSS HP: 55

His eyes flickered and when Dawson called, he turned his gun quickly at his head before stopping to see that the person before him was very much alive and very much Dawson.
Pointing the barrel of Saliva away, he glanced around before looking back at Dawson with the slow absorption of what was going on. Turning, he pointed his weapon, but was worried now if he shot at the wrong target.
"AL! Can you hear us? Say something!" He called out, firing his weapon into the fog.
Not her. Not her. Not her.

He could hear them again. He called out, "I'm here!" But he was abruptly silenced yet again as he felt a hand grasp at his neck, a face staring back at him nose to nose. The face of death, no one he recognized, but putrid and rotting all the same. He started to scream but the creatures pitch black breath quickly filled is face making it so he could not catch his breath. He lashed out with Nuru, decapitating the creature, it's wispy hand still around his neck, though limp.
This really was a damn nightmare. HP - 18/50 DMG - 7 CRG - 3/3 BOSS - 41/100

"HEY--" He couldn't help himself; he staggered back and brought his shield up when he saw the barrel of the gun pointed at him. Only when something foul tried to claw at his back did he pull his attention off Melvin to take care of it. The Lifer seemed thankfully over it for the moment, but Dawson's heart was still pounding a little harder in the aftermath. But at least they'd heard Al. He jerked his head towards where he thought he had heard the sound before turning to Melvin, his free hand clutching at the other's cloak. "We gotta get t'him," he said between several coughs. "Might be pinned over there. Yer turn t'stick close t'me, aight?" He tested a small tug before letting go, trying to creep them deeper into the fog. Dawson's tug on his coat was met in return with Melvin grabbing a part of his and following him. By this point the fog was still thick but the eyes were fewer now. Holding on to Dawsin at least assured him that he wouldn't loose the other man abruptly.
"Just keep calling! We're headed your way." He pointed up ahead and shot in front of them to clear the way over. HP: 37 DMG: 16 CHG: 3/3 BOSS HP: 26

He heard them again. s**t, suddenly they sounded even further than before. The ground shifted again. Stone against stone.
Nuru called out to him, assured him that he got this as runes glowed brighter and brighter until they looked as though they were blazing right through the darkness. Al held him up, the red eyes dwarfing the creatures still yet unseen in the mass of darkness. Bright burning flames burst forth, consuming the darkness in its violet wake. For a moment the silhouette of Al was in clear view and the others were in clear view of him. He turned and began running in their direction, the black smog burst forth yet again, concealing everyone as quickly as it could, divide and conquer. This game was not over until it was over. There--a burst of fire lit Al up in the slowly dissipating miasma. Glad Melvin was still grabbing him, Dawson began to hustle towards where he last saw their teammate, bashing several smaller skittering things in his wake. Dammit dammit dammit... Almost as if in response, Syn's eyes lit up with orange light before a plume of fire jetted out from her mouth towards where Al had last been seen, both in hopes to light the way, show their position, and heal the boy before the mob broke his shield. But the flame flickered quickly, eaten up by the gas, and blew out like a mere ******** ******** <******** <******** movin', we're comin' to ya!" Dawson yelled desperately, hoping Melvin could take out the last of them. The ground was growing precariously rough, and he had to split his attention between fending off nearby creatures, keeping their path steady, and searching for more signs of their lost trainee. Seeing Dawson's charge literally burn up, he glanced at Saliva. If he tried to heal Al at this distance, he could wind up just hitting the enemy. Pointing ahead, he fired again and he heard HER shriek out as the fog started to clear slightly.
Things went more quiet now. They eyes blinked out, receeding.
"I think they are backing off for now." He told Dawson as he moved alongside him to where they last saw Al. He could spit the red scarf up ahead. "Stay there. I have a heal charge."

Al was running, running as fast as he could to catch up. Plumes erupted all around him again, the ground splitting and parting. Stone slamming violently against stone until he realized the gaping maw beneath him mid stride. The shrieks of faceless creatures drowned out his own cries. Teeth. So many teeth he could not count rose up around him. He was caught. He struggled. The beast swallowed.
The darkness receded between cracks of stone. The bright red scarf flapped valiantly, encircling a silhouette that stood tall and proud. Light took over where darkness once consumed. The silhouette shifted, part of it falling to the ground and crumbling.
The scarf broke free from the stone. Rows of stone stuck out of the ground, reaching for the sky. Too high for anyone to jump. Rows of teeth, stone teeth, guarding the seemingly endless chasm that stood where Al moments ago had been.
The scarf, crimson red and permanently stained with blood, led to tumble at their feet by a chill breeze. This was all that was left.

It was
relief, sweet brief relief that he didn't ******** it up so badly that --
and then
-- but he hadn't led them over fast enough. Or the ground had grown too treacherous to reach Al in time. Or there had been something else lurking there that they had missed. Or God just wasn't watching today. Al fell, and Dawson strained his voice calling out in a knee-jerk panic against the pit his own heart was falling into, and he scrabbled over the broken grins of concrete and cavernous openings with little regard for his own chances of falling in, but it didn't matter. Neither of them could reach the trainee now.
Shaking hands scooped up the blood-soaked scarf left behind. Dawson fought to even his breaths again, afraid this too might send Melvin hurtling somewhere he shouldn't go after whatever ghastly vision he'd been forced to endure. He turned to the Lifer, a shade paler.
After a moment, he asked, "You still got juice left in ya?" It didn't occur to him that they should pendent out and report the incident immediately. It would have meant something more permanent than he allowed, something beyond the present that they still could control.

He stared out to the massive mouth of the cracked, jagged divide as cold settled and thought and feeling receded quickly. Shock took hold, and he stood there, watching, quiet, before he turned his head slowly to look at Dawson.
Words muffled, he didn't respond, just looking at him as if searching for why h was there, was looking at him, before he gave a very small... "wha..?"

Growling to himself, Dawson turned away, clutched his shield, and began to try and chip away at the concrete jaws that had swallowed Al up. Maybe if he just hit it hard enough, he could force their way through, get a better look, something...
But even with his enhanced strength, he wasn't making any headway. His arms flared up with pain at the exertion, and even Syn in her sibilant snake tones whispered for him to stop. He struck the uprooted ground one last time before letting his weapon drop with a dull clang, sweat dripping from his brow. He wasn't sure he could feel his heart beat any more.
Dawson panted for a few moments before before returning to Melvin, clutching at his arm, the red scarf tickling them both. "We gotta alert HQ," he said hurriedly. "Get 'em to scope this place, send a team," he didn't God damn know, "we jus', we gotta go. You hear me, Melvin?"

He snapped and stared back at Dawson before he grabbed his wrist. "Boost me up. Let me see if I can look down at least." He checked his Spectrr watch but didn't see anything. Damn.
He moved over to the crevice and waited for Dawson to help. Taking his flashlight, he turned it on and chucked it into the hole. Maybe he could see something.

Nodding hurriedly, Dawson situated himself by the wall of broken concrete and widened his stance before boosting Melvin up. Unbidden, he thought of how it might have looked the other way around. Always had to joke to deal with stress.
"Y'see anythin'?" he prompted. "Al! Buddy, say somethin'!"

Moving up, he stepped onto Dawson's boosted arms and pulled himself against the mouth of the cavern, looking down in hopes he could see anything. The flashlight had clattered and knocked for what showed a long drop down and te flickering light from it showed no signs of Al's long hair, a flailing arm hoping for help, or even a hunter jacket. "I don't see him. Just rocks, but it's too dark down there." He said over his shoulder down to Dawson.
"ALLLLLLL! CAN YOU HEAR ME? SAY SOMETHING?" He turned his ear, but all he heard was a distant rumbling that made him nervous and the sound of his own heartbeat.
He called again and once more and each time he listened, no one answered back.
"Let's go to HQ and get a team back. See if we can't get some ropes long enough to get down there. Just memorize the area so we can find this." He looked around and back. "Wish we can some flares or lights."
"Let's go."
