"They're true," said Sunny. "All the old stories." She swung their hands between them, a child playing a nursery game. "I only showed them a little. A glimpse. You're seeing it now, if only you'd look." The bloody water. Her strangely glimmering eyes. Those teeth.

She said, "Adoelle was scared. They all were."

The swing of their hands caught him off guard but he did not let go, not even for a second. Sunny was a suspect and she was not getting away.

His eyes glanced away from hers, towards the water. The smell of blood from her smoke only seemed to make him notice it more. It wasn't right, the water was not supposed to be like that. The way the tide was moving in and out was slow, like actual blood. The entire situation was like almost like when Algie would spook him when he came to meet him at the bookstore at the end of the day. Years of training and the detective did not jump. It was unsettling, like noticing something that had been there on your skin all this time but you did not jump.

"They're children," his voice was low, eyes falling back to her and looking at her a bit differently. Her eyes, the too many teeth. "Of course they were." Jeremiah took a sucked in a breath through his mouth, blew it out through his nose. "Seeing this? This will help me find them?"

Not that he had a damn clue what it was. Not exactly. Part of him was cursing his lack of knowledge about the old stories.

Sunny nodded. Her smile faded and she looked--sad, almost, an almost-imperceptible movement of the corners of her mouth, the lowering of her gaze. "I don't remember being a child," she said. "I don't think I was ever curious like they were." Abruptly she seemed less a supernatural being and more like what she appeared to be: little more than a teenaged girl herself. "But they didn't deserve it. After three days of fog, the rain will come. Then you'll see it for true."

This was all crazy - but it was hard to deny the things his eyes saw. Jeremiah didn't smoke, didn't use drugs, and unless this was some delayed reaction from the carrot cake he had a while back - he wasn't poisoned either.

Without even thinking about it, because for a moment he was thinking dream but that had to be ridiculous, his hand slipped a little and his fingers moved to press against Sunny's pulse. It was thin, thready - as if she should have been bleeding out. She wasn't. His hand still did not let go.

"You ..." Jeremiah shook his head and let the statement drop. Clearly she was alive and fine. He did not know what to make of this situation. "More than I am seeing now?" Another breath was sucked in, his shoulders rolling. The next question was out before he could stop himself. "Did you mean for this to happen?"

She nodded, but then a moment later shook her head. "I didn't do it," she said. "But it's my fault it's happening. They never accounted for me."

Sunny Shore watched the water fade back to a night-black, reflecting only the risen moon. "I did mean to show you, though," she said. "We made a deal. I always honor my deals."

Jeremiah was quiet, watching her and then looking back to water. At least it seemed genuine, her tone and what she said. He noticed it then, after a moment of staring, that the water back to normal and the moon visible once more. It was a lot to process, a lot to figure out just what was going on. Now it felt like there was more questions.

Now he felt like he was on the edge of a what if ...

"Then we have that in common. I never make a promise I don't intend to keep." Her eyes looked normal again as well but he still was not sure about those teeth. "I'll find those kids and bring them back." Determination was in his voice, more so than it had been before.

"I hope so," she said. "It would make me sad to have to eat your heart." Sunny flicked her cigarette into the gathering dark, and without warning--vanished entirely.
