Lawerence paused and inclined a brow. "Big words?" he said thoughtfully, and it sounded like incredulity when really he found himself trying to parse what exactly such a comment could mean. Sometimes his intense leanings towards literalistic interpretations tripped him up. None of the words were particularly long or tall when written that he'd just said. He had to infer in the end that they were uncommon, but it took him some time to get there.

He tried to wave off the long silence with a shrug. "Perhaps your lack of education makes being a paid thug simpler?" He smirked. "Did it make sanctioning my death simpler? I hear there are a lot of very stupid executioners in the world."

a*****e.

d**k, p***k, jerkface dickbutt!

Otto fought to keep his breathing even. It did not work. He was angry. Angry at Lawr for being an a**. Angry at himself that his words actually hurt his feelings. He wanted to say something smart. Something hurtful. Something that could put him on top.

But he wasn't smart enough. He couldn't think of anything. All he could do was feel.

He tried to remember he was here to work. Keep an eye on the terrain. Look for inconsistencies. Look for abnormalities, and other long words he knew of but could never speak or spell without enormous difficulty.

"Executioners usually have a kill or two under their belt." He muttered gruffly, "You're still breathin'."

"You just chose someone who is exceptionally difficult to kill, can't fault you for that." he said smugly. "If a bunch of barely domesticated Halloween creatures and a swim in tentacle infested waters couldn't kill me then it should be no insult that your little attempt failed." He was used to the world preferring that he was dead, but it was an opinion he simply had to agree to disagree on, people saw him dead or in prison and he saw himself rich, surrounded by very attractive young creatures and completely free to do what he wanted.

"But I'm sure, having been here so long you have a few kills under your belt, either hands-on or, as so many people around here seem to have clocked up, indirect kills. Friends not cared for enough, driven to dangerous missions and harm, not being there when you should have been, not strong enough. Not smart enough." and there was something sweet in his voice, almost sing song. "Which of those do you have more of and which of them is the worst sin to carry?"

What did Lawr get out of all this. Was worming his way into other's insecurities and weaknesses some sort of kink? Did he feed off it? The man seemed to be in love with himself the way he spoke as if untouchable. Otto tried in vain not to care enough to listen; however, he was too curious not to by nature. He was on high alert, and ignoring this man talking seemed a bad idea at the time.

By kills, he'd first assumed creatures. And those he sure there were many. However, his way of asking and the way it reminded him of certain experiences.. Otto came to realize he might be talking about fellow hunters, or even people.

He'd watched others die, some in his arms. He'd been helpless as someone close to him was killed right in front of him. He couldn't call those the kills of an executioner, but it did what he assumed Lawr had hoped for; it set him off balance emotionally. Just remembering them, even below the surface, made him shudder and want to explode.

He nearly tripped over a root, nearly smacked by a branch, all because he was too focused on the pain of those memories. His face was beet red, and it felt hotter than the core of the Earth.

Why bother answering that man's question, he thought. What good would handing over all this power over his emotions to that man accomplish? Lawr likely already knew Otto was easy to rile up. Likely knew he was already nearing the edges of his tolerance. But he felt helpless to the jabs and perfect shots. Unguarded despite expecting it all.

"What's it to you?" He grumbled some more, fighting through gritted teeth to keep the hurt and anger out of his voice. Of all people, why? Why'd it have to be Lawr? What good did this man give to this organizations cause?

"You don't even ******** care. So don't ask me that s**t."

The reaction was in a way exactly what Lawrence wanted, every conversation with other people was in some sense a carefully calculated field experiment. Strange things set people off and they had inexplicable reactions to events and accusations which he saw no problem with at all. Murder was one of those things, he had certainly never killed someone in a fit of emotion, not in the same way as a drunk at a bar might but he had been responsible for several "accidents" in his time. It had been easier when his clients were so often very old or vulnerable widowers and spinsters who subsisted off of an elaborate cocktail of life sustaining drugs, any one of which could be removed or replaced without much suspicion from anyone. The only time he'd lashed out in what he could only assume was true emotion had been with Maja, when on hearing of her decision to divorce him. She had been leaving so he had been pressed for time to stop her, to stop her for ever.

None of it bothered him, and he sought to find out what the root cause of other people's concern was, to dissect the very essence of guilt in order to simulate it better.

He caught up a little with Otto and smiled as he stumbled, daintily stepping over the root himself in what was practically a gesture of dominance.

"Curiosity." he said serenely. "And how do you know I don't care?" he said. "Maybe I'm a very caring person underneath, a warm and cuddly core of morals and feelings. Maybe this is all an act."

PostPosted: Tue Mar 22, 2016 7:25 am

"Yeah, well your curiosity ain't gettin' fed by me." He was in no way going to reveal his inner turmoil. Not to a many who clearly liked exploiting such things. It was bad enough to show as much reaction as he was giving. But for Otto, this was as strong as he could resist him.

He scoffed openly at Lawr, giving the man a bitterly sour side glance as he caught up. "You? Warm and cuddly? I have a hard time belivin' that one." He turned away again and kicked a rock across the pathway, hard. "That's some act, then. But no one trusts a jackass who pokes fun at people's pain." He spat in retort.

"Shame, it would be nice to make the most of this little enforced walk. Maybe you could work through your obvious anger issues, take a leaf out of my book. I am never angry." he didn't comment that the lack of anger simply meant that when his frustration levels peaked he lashed out without warning or any indication that it was coming.

"And oh I don't know, I'm not poking fun at your pain. I was poking fun at your attitude towards learning. Anyone who is disparaging towards bettering themselves is doomed to always be a fool, and a fool by choice rather than circumstance. And there is nothing worse than that." He smiled again, "But are you saying that you are in pain?"

He was so mad it was making him sick. Men like this trying to upset him, throwing him off, catch him at his worst and exploiting whatever came of it. He knew the type a little too well, even if Lawr himself was much more calculating about it.

"Uh huh." He drawled with a barely steady breath in, "Yeah, I'll get right on to learnin' s**t n' betterin' myself. I'm sure it'll be real ******** helpful and enlightening. I loved learnin' so much growin' up, I'm sure I just forgot what I was ********' missing." The bitterness in his voice was sharp and foul.

He was careful to avoid even glaring at Lawrence for his last comment. No more, no more weakness in front of him. He couldn't afford it. He kept his mouth shut tight, breathing audibly through his nose in vain attempts at calming down.

"I wonder what happened to you." he mused aloud. "To make you so afraid of knowledge. Is it fear of failure? Everything you say sounds like fear, such exquisite amounts of it. Even attacking me, that felt like fear too, like a cornered animal snapping at the hands which reach for it."

He tilted his head slightly.

"You are upset. Many people seem to fear failure. Is that what it is for you?"

PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2016 7:07 am

What Otto hated most about Lawr at that moment, was that he was absolutely correct. He hated that he was right on the money. He hated that the pieces fell into place. That it made perfect sense. Fear of failure. Fear in general. He was always angry because he was alway afraid. Even when he'd shot the man, he'd been afraid. He was always on edge, looking for the opportunity to shoot first, before someone beat him to it.

Swallowing his grand amount of pride, nearly literally, Otto relented. "Probably." He said with a face still burning with embarrassment.

Lawrence nodded, not gloating but simply seeming to note this response.

"So why? What is so terrifying about failure that one should never try? Is it pride? Is the fear of humiliation so great as to hold you back from actions?" He was not motivated in the same way to avoid humilation, fixating on dignity simply as a means to make other people take him seriously.

"I suppose no one should think ill of you for never trying, the world is full of people who never try."

PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2016 7:26 am

Otto wasn't sure if he had an answer, or if he was once again scared of working out the answer himself. He'd have to think about times he'd tried and failed so often when he was homeschooled, and rewarded for his hard work with quietly disappointed stares from his mother; followed by a shrill and terrifying scolding from his father for wasting her time. He didn't want to dwell, or remember.

And he was still trying to be stubborn about letting too much on in front of Lawr; a feat that seemed fruitless for a young man who wore his emotions on his sleeve, begrudgingly.

"Failing ain't an option, so tryin' is out of the question." Was all he managed after some thought.

"Strange logic but I suppose logic nonetheless, never try, never fail. But it follows does it not that by the same logic then you should never live but die instead because the very act of life itself runs the risk of failure." he shook his head. "I certainly can't imagine a life lived without risk. With the risks lie the gains, the tremendous and significant rewards which come with being daring."

In truth he simply did not have fear holding him back and it had been his greatest advantage and disadvantage in his life.

"What a meek and scared little thing you are."

PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2016 3:50 pm

"That's a stretch." He mumbled in return, not giving Lawr's 'logic' and ramblings about life and risk too much thought. His reasoning was becoming complicated, and flew over his head. He wasn't even sure if this was about education anymore.

Once again he refrained from glaring at Lawr, even as he called him meek and scared. He bit the inside of his cheek and counted to three.

"Whatever. At least I ain't an old skeleton like you. You look less alive than I do."

Lawrence narrowed his eyes ever so slightly at the comment about both his thin physique and how alive he looked, not giving away a great deal about how much such comments rankled his pride. He was thin but in his own opinion it was the right sort of thin, it was functionally thin, it showed control and power and youth.

He did not see what other people saw particularly.

"I am very much alive and will continue to be so long after your impetuosity gets you killed on a mission for your ridiculously dangerous division.."
