The familiar series of notes was certainly music to Maerad's ears. She clapped her hands together excitedly. "Beautiful!" she whispered to Quartz, who looked incredibly nervous. Maerad supposed she understood. The harp certainly looked expensive, and it was, but she also knew that someone who was so careful could never break the harp with their delicate touch.
But at the idea of being drawn, Maerad grew even more excited. "That sounds so fun!" she said, deciding this would be the perfect opportunity to show off her real skills. In addition, the two of them could both be in their comfort zone while interacting with each other. It was pretty much the perfect arrangement. At this point, she'd have to play very quietly to not be caught by her caretaker, who was probably already looking for her. While Quartz got her pencils ready, Maerad positioned herself once more in front of her instrument, depressing one or two pedals with her tail.
She began playing piece that was almost baroque in nature, but also very simple and pretty. The kind of piece that might put a weaker-willed freshling to sleep. Her fingers moved delicately over the strings. Her tail plucking the notes furthest from her, strings she might be able to reach with her hands one day, but not today. Occasionally, her emerald stare glanced over to Quartz, and she expressed a small smile on her lips.

Quartz didn't start drawing immediately. The music was so pretty, and it was so fascinating to watch Maerad play, that she just sat there for a few minutes listening. It was the gentle tap of her pencil against the paper as her wrist relaxed that reminded her of the sketch book she held. A line here and there, and though the beautiful music still filled her ears Quartz felt her mind focus a bit more. For a long time the only sounds in the room was of Maerad's song and the soft scratchings of pencil against paper. When the song finally drifted to a close Quartz sketched a moment or two longer before the silence really registered. She looked up in surprise. She'd gotten so pulled into the music and the drawing that it seemed like hardly a few minutes had passed. She looked back down at her sketch. It wasn't as detailed as she normally would have made it, just outlining strokes in the vague shape of a piano, and more of Maerad. She'd picked a moment when the Naga had her head slightly lowered, a hint of focus in the way of her brows but a peaceful and happy set to her eyes. Quartz had thought the moment was quite striking and had spent most of her time trying to properly capture that expression. "That was very pretty," Quartz said softly into the silence between them, both out of shyness and a reluctance to break the spell the music had made. She added a few more lines to the less detailed portions of the sketch, frowning a little herself as she wondered if she'd done good enough with her drawing. smolderingskies I'M SO SORRY I TOOK THIS LONG TO RESPOND!

The notes of the music hung in the air for a few seconds as Quartz's pencil scratched a few remaining lines, before the Baphomet broke the silence with her gentle words. "Thank you," Maerad said shyly, smiling to herself, and she slipped the heavy cloth cover back over the harp, making sure it was snug enough to not allow a mote of dust on her precious instrument. She ran her hand over it one more time, feeling the intricate carvings of the wood beneath her palm, refamiliarizing herself with it, before turning back to her new acquaintance.
"Could I see your drawing?" she asked, sliding her way over to Quartz, trying to sneak a peek at the paper. From upside down, the lines were a bit hard to discern, but she could tell they were done carefully and with gentle attention. Maerad was retrospectively nervous about having been drawn, hoping she was a good model, that Quartz could see a beauty in her that translated well onto paper.

Quartz fidgeted a little, a touch of self-conscious shyness turning her cheeks a slightly darker pink. She'd always been pretty reluctant to show off her work; actually she never did show it off. Sometimes it would get spotted and people would ask to see, but all of Quartz's sketch books at home were closed and firmly tucked away in a special box under her bed. Even with her family she was reluctant to show her work. The poor little Baphomet had a tough time accepting criticism....or praise. Though it took an effort to do so, Quartz turned the sketch book around and held it so that Maerad could see her. Her fingers were trembling a little, but she clenched them tighter to the book so it wouldn't be noticed. Would Maerad be pleased, or would she think the sketch didn't resemble her in the slightest? Would she be disappointed by the lack of detail in places? Quartz's mind was filled with thoughts like these, each running around in her head frantically like a mouse cornered in a barrel. smolderingskies Thanks :3 I'm trying hard not to vanish again so completely!

Maerad saw the look on her new Baphomet friend's face, and instantly felt a little bad for asking. But... she'd showed Quartz her work, so why couldn't Quartz show her? Maybe she was like, really bad, and had just started doing art or something. But when Quartz turned the sketchbook around, Maerad's eyes widened in surprise. The drawings were... "Beautiful," Maerad breathed. She didn't think she was that pretty, but the way Quartz had captured her face, her focus on the music. It was almost as if she could hear herself playing harp again just by looking at the drawing. She beamed at her. "Thank you for doing this."
She might have been just about to say something else, when she heard footsteps outside the door. It came open quickly, and there was standing her caretaker, a demon lady whose name Maerad couldn't recall. Maerad, the woman said, it's far past curfew. Time to go back to your dorm. Ugh. She hated getting in trouble.
"I've gotta go," the Naga said to Quartz, fiddling with her fingers uncomfortably. "Thanks for listening to me play." She really hoped that she got to see the Baphomet again, even if it was just in class or in the hallway at school. It wasn't every day you found someone who appreciated your music, even if they could interpret it in a different way.

Quartz felt a little nervous as she watched Maerad take in the drawing, but felt a rush of relief when she beamed and complimented the work. It made Quartz blush, but it was a blush of pleasure. "I'm glad you like it," she started to say, when the sound of footsteps began echoing in the hallway. Moments later an adult appeared, informing Maerad of the curfew and telling her to go back to her room. She didn't say anything to Quartz, but Quartz could feeling the stare of "adult command" on the back of her neck. She shrank a little into herself like a turtle, but when Maerad spoke to her she straightened up a bit. "Ah, it was my pleasure," she said, smiling. "I should probably go too, Mama might be looking for me." She got up off the bench she'd been sitting on and started for the door, then paused and looked back. "Ah...see you in class tomorrow," she said softly, the words a half question. She gave Maerad another shy smile, then hurried off to find her mother before the disapproving adult decided to start fussing at her or get Maerad into more trouble. smolderingskies -cackles- But yar, think closer post from you and we're probably good?

She blinked, sort of surprised by Quartz's sentiment. But then, it dawned on her that the baphomet was being leigitimately friendly. "See you in class!" Maerad beamed, even as she was being dragged away by her caretaker. She often spent so much time in her room, cuddling with her vespercats and wishing her fingers would be plucking the strings of a harp instead of the air. She hadn't slept in what felt like weeks, but maybe she'd sleep well tonight. For the first time since she had been brought here from the Swirling Storms, she felt as if she made a friend.
