He shook his head slowly. "Not that sort of military," said Aurostibite. "I don't belong to Destiny City. It's an organization called the Negaverse. We protect what is ours and try to keep people from taking things that don't belong to them."

Behellagh preened beneath his fingers. Aurostibite kept his gaze on the girl.

"We provide strength and protection for the betterment of Destiny City and Earth itself," he continued. "And we give magic and power to ones such as yourself to be able to accomplish that. Everything we do is for the protection of Earth, as there are people here who wish to disrupt that, take that away."

He gave a little shrug, watching her carefully.

"You seem the type to be able to help with that," said Aurostibite.

"You don't know the first thing about me," Rory shot back bitterly, arms folding across her chest as she tipped her head back to glare at the tall man.

It was times like this that she hated that she appeared to hit the height of puberty and was forced to forever be a shrimp of a girl who had to look up and glare at someone rather just being able to glare at them. "You see me struggle with some snake thing and that's how you decide if I'm "worthy"?"

Seemed like a load of bull to the girl.

"I'm just supposed to believe that you're this - this - " she couldn't find the words, throwing her hands up in the air exasperatedly. "wizard soldier?"

He raised his eyebrows. "Perhaps not," said Aurostibite agreeably. "But I know what most people want, to better the world. After all, we're the ones who have to live in it. Why shouldn't we do the best we can to make sure it's habitable and safe?"

Behellagh pressed more securely against his leg. Aurostibite gave a little nod of his head, surveying the girl carefully.

"You have a strong mind, clearly," he said, with a touch of dry amusement. "You held your own against a youma. You can fend for yourself, obviously; I'm merely offering you a chance to continue on the way to more than just that. A chance to do more for the greater good of the world."

I know what most people want, to better the world.

That simple sentence hit Rory hard and she staggered back slightly, heel slipping and almost falling into the ground completely only to regain her balance last minute. "I don't - " she hesitated, gripping her strap so tightly her knuckles turned white. "How can joining whatever it is that you belong to help 'better the world'?"

Rory liked to know what she was getting into before she joined clubs or got active in any sort of extra-curricular.

She couldn't devote her efforts to just any cause.

"How. How do you give me this 'gift' of yours?"

He knew he was getting to her; he cold see the shift beginning, could see the start of her mind working with what he'd said. Still, Aurostibite did not press immediately; he let her comprehend, let her mull about his words, because rushing the process would only worsen it, he suspected.

"We protect," he said simply. "There are people within the city - not us, but others - who are trying their damndest to ruin and desecrate this world. We - the Negaverse, that is - are the ones who want to make sure that Earth remains what it is: a safe place for us to live and grow, and to develop into what it can be."

He let Behellagh nudge at his hand, but Aurostibite kept his calm gaze on the girl.

"It's a simple enough process," he said quietly. "I take you to our leader, and she recruits you. It can be a little - rough - at first, but once she has given you the magic, it's yours to keep."

She'd seen the news reports, it was part of her school work after all to keep up on the news for that pesky gov't class, and she knew that Destiny City was targeted for those so called terrorists. The ones that ran around in sailor skirts and frankly looked utterly ridiculous to Rory but still -

If she could do something to help the greater good, protect the people and even save some then - well she needed to try right?

"Why can't you do it?" The tension had started to seep from her shoulders a little and her grip on her bag wasn't as fierce as it'd had been. "You said you were a general so, couldn't you do the weird magicky thing?"

If she agreed she didn't to meet someone who probably would've also left her to fend for herself. At least the guy with the long luscious locks of flowing hair in front of her had disposed of the snake thing.

She didn't trust him, not yet, but she could at least tolerate him. So far.

He half smiled. "I can do some things," said Aurostibite, still maintaining a reasonable distance between them so as to not intimidate her or further suspicions. "But there are...certain circumstances and special people that are impervious to my abilities. I would require the assistance of one of my superiors."

He inclined his head respectfully towards her.

"Is that something you would consider, then? I realize I'm asking quite a bit of trust from you, but I can assure you that what I've said is nothing but the truth. I'd like to have my superior instill some magic in you to help you and to encourage you to help the greater good."

Behellagh crooned appreciatively at his side.

"What do you mean by 'special people'?" Rory asked, blue brow arching as skepticism settled over her again. She wanted whatever he was offering because, how could she say no to magic? But pops had raised her right and she wasn't doing anything without proper information.

It's why she didn't volunteer for certain organizations or avoided rallies run by corrupt charities. If she was going to be doing things for the "greater good" then she was going to be informed dammit.

There was a long pause, with Rory's lips pursed together and fingers digging into the fabric of her cream and brown striped sweater. "Okay," she breathed slowly, running her tongue along her teeth before she stepped toward the man and stuck her hand out.

"I accept, but I swear to - if you don't help me through this...thing you're promising. You'll regret it."

"Some of us have magic," said Aurostibite calmly, "and some have weapons. I have no way of knowing which one you are, but the ones with magic are the ones that are more special - which I believe you are - and I would rather take you to a superior who would be able to tell before trying it myself. "

He tugged at the wrist of one of his gloves, straightening it in an absentminded way. But his eyes remained on the girl, watching, waiting -

- and she had said yes.

He felt the satisfaction in his veins, the relief, the anticipation all at once. Aurostibite felt the tension in his shoulders ease a little and he gave a single nod to show that he had understood what she was saying. Out loud, he said, "I will make sure that you get what it is that I have promised."

He stuck out a hand, once more, towards her.

"Your name, then? Since I'd rather know before I take you."

Rory tried to keep from frowning at him, because it seemed like that was all she did but it seemed weird to her that he didn't want to try whatever voodoo magic he possessed before going to a higher up.

Still, she wasn't going to argue. Not now, because what did she know of magic?

Nothing. So, she was going to attempt to trust him. For now.

Reluctantly she stuck her hand in his and shook it. "Rory," she grumbled, deciding to not give him much more than that. Rory was sufficient, she was sure.

His gloved fingers grasped her much smaller ones, and gave the hand offered a firm, but not overpowering, shake. She was young, perhaps, but she had a sharp mind, one that would be good for the Negaverse. Aurostibite found it pleasing, as well as her willingness to accompany him.

"Rory," he said quietly. "A pleasure. And now - "

He did not lower his hand from hers just yet.

"Shall we, then? Are you ready to receive your magic?"

It felt weird, having her hand still so firmly in the man's grip. So much so that she spent an awful long time staring at their hands, possibly marveling at the size difference between them. Rory was so small in comparison to the man. She wasn't sure if it was due to the obvious age difference between them - seriously no one would be able to convince her that Aurostibite wasn't in his early twenties, at least - or it was just the sad, sad fact that she was petite even for her age.

If she was stuck at five feet and three inches for the rest of her life, well she'd still manage to be a terrifying force of nature. Just a tiny, terrifying force of nature. That'd be fun.

"How many times are you going to make me say yes?" She huffed, squinting at him before sighing and nodding. "I said yes didn't I?"

There was a reason he had not yet let go of her hand, in spite of the strange picture it might have presented. Aurostibite gave a satisfied nod, a small smile quirking at the corners of his lips, dark hair rippling down his back in thick waves.

"Good," he said, and teleported.

They arrived a second later in the grand halls of the castle, dark and quiet.

"This is Negaspace," said Aurostibite. "It's where our leaders reside, and where we hold the majority of our power; it's also where you'll get your magic. Follow me, now."

A few agents milled about here and there, but Aurostibite did not waste any time, instead leading Rory past them, down a few corridors, until he came to a halt in front of a large, ornate door. He squared his shoulders, took a breath, and knocked.

"General-Queen Laurelite?"

Laurelite had been keeping herself busy at her desk; she was buried in work and would have liked nothing more than to be left to her own devices, but when there was a voice outside her door she considered just calling for them to let themselves in.

But that was unbecoming, and not as polite as she could have been, so instead she stood and brushed her uniform down, moved her papers so they were stacked nicely, and then made her way to greet them.

She pulled open the door, small smile gracing her features, and glanced between the two of them.

"Hello," she said pleasantly. "I don't think we have an appointment, is everything all right?"

It had gotten infinitely weirder than Rory had been expecting when the strange man literally teleported them elsewhere. She didn't say anything as she followed behind him, both because there was too much to take in and because she couldn't shake the feeling that she shouldn't be there.

Eyes that were more green than blue shifted across the large expanse of the castle as they waited for this General-Queen to answer her door, whatever that title meant.

She frowned a bit when a small woman opened the door with hair a similar shade to her own. Her outfit suggested something from Asia but the woman herself did not look like she hailed from where her clothing might suggest.

Man, this whole thing was weird.

And yet, still Rory said nothing and instead stared at the other woman almost expectantly.
