That might have been a touch unsportsmanlike. Gretchen winced as she felt the impact through the body if the staff, heard the snap of his teeth slamming together, and took an immediate, automatic step back, much to Devika's chagrin. "Are you-". The question was cut off by the flash of runes, the abrupt motion, and the sudden and overall sensation of burning. Dark eyes widened a split second before the Death trainer gave a startled, pained yelp. When it passed Micah's weapon was gone, reverted back to totem, and the other trainee was down, cursing. Gretchen's followed a moment after, and she took a step closer to offer him a hand up. "That one hurt," she pointed out uselessly, but her tone made it sound like a compliment. Granted, she doubted the plan was for him to get caught up in the charge as well.

Micah considered refusing the hand, but his manners kicked in a moment later and he accepted the hand up, feeling his cheeks heat with a blush. "Yeah," he said a little grumpily, "she can't ********' aim it though so I don't know how it's any use." Hey, Nova whined, but there was an edge of guilt to it. She knew as well as he did that her charge had lost them the spar.

"Hmm." Gretchen drew him back to his feet, pretending not to notice the color that was spreading along his cheeks. "Could be useful, in certain circumstances." She gave a small shrug. "If your opponent was worst off than you, in any case." Draw them in, then release the charge. It seemed a bit self-sacrifice-y though. "My charge isn't very useful either." Devika gave an indignant hiss, bristling in irritation. "I mean, I guess it could be, but I've never gotten it to work."

Micah brushed the snow off himself, grateful for the lack of teasing. "Dunno if I could tell that, not easily anyhow," he said, but he looked thoughtful. "I mean. Usually by the time she's charged we're kinda beat up already." "What's yours do?" he asked curiously.

"Mm, that is true." And to that little boy if logic she had nothing to add. Though she was sure he'd figure out something. That was part of being a hunter, she'd learned. Figuring out how to improve your strengths and work around your pitfalls and shortcomings. It was her turn to blush now, and she gave a little, uneasy laugh. "Well, it's supposed to heal and repair my shield, but I've never gotten it to work." She could feel Devika radiating with disdain, coiling at the back of her mind.

"We'll get tougher," Micah said, although he wasn't entirely sure how long that would take. "I'm working out daily." He could lift more than he'd ever been able to, now that he had the time to spend at the gym and was taking it seriously. "Keep trying, yah?" he encouraged her. "It's gotta work sometime, right? I mean, Nova's works, even if it kinda backfires."

"Yeah," she agreed, though maintained that subtle thread in uncertainty. At the very least, charge aside, Gretchen had been improving. She'd gone from knowing nothing of how to properly handle or wield her weapon, and was now quite adequate. Hands retreating the relative warmth of her pockets, Gretchen rocked back on her heels. "Hopefully not so much, with practice."

"Yeah, we gotta get better sometime if we practice. Works that way." After a moment, Micah extended his hand for a handshake. "Thanks," he said, only a little grudging. "Good fight."

Gretchen nodded, smiling brightly at that logic. Then she took his hand, offering a firm shake. "Good fight." Maybe they could do it again some time. It'd be nice to get to know her fellow trainee a little better, he seemed nice.
