Irkalla, Page of Cosmos

The silence of the night was interrupted when another individual burst onto the scene. Irkalla noted the brambles and burrs that had accumulated on the woman's outfit. She watched the stranger put away a crystal that looked like the ones that the stranger had collected earlier.

Thinking back on the meeting that had happened before the portal opened Irkalla tried to surmise for this newcomer.

"There was a lot of arguing at first when everyone arrived. Some people were distrustful of things. So not much was accomplished at first. I think that changed when the stranger kept his word and opened a portal. Lots of people went in and apparently they only have about an hour to do what needs doing. I chose to remain here."

At the introduction Irkalla realized that she might be talking to another knight. She gave a smile in response, "I'm Irkalla of Cosmos. It's nice to meet you Celliwig."

Sailor Methone, Eternal Transcendent of Aurora Borealis

Methone was so angry. SO ANGRY. Not only had Lorne disappeared, but so had Auguste and she got some cryptic bullshit text from Colin about doing something STUPID which she knew would only be the stupid crystal s**t from the hooded man. Even ASH WAS MISSING. and Ash only went missing when serious s**t happened.

She didn't have to look far to see a few other order agents spread out outside what looked like a portal and she made her way over to them, crossing her arms under the shawl.

"What's the deal with communication with them on the other side...?" She asked the nearest person to her which happened to be a colorful senshi with pretty hair and eyes.

Someone addressed her from behind and Eros started, half turning to cast a look over her shoulder. What she saw was a rather lovely lady in shades of purple and green and what looked like blacklight paint on her hips. Her interest immediately caught, the small senshi dropped her arms and turned, offering a warm and welcoming smile.

"Hey! Kinda late to the party huh?" She said as she braced her hands on her hips, trying to get a good look at the woman without looking like she was really looking. Or admiring, as the case was.

"There wasn't been any movement in or out since that guy opened the portal and everyone you don't see here went through." Eros shrugged as she glanced back at the scene, eyeing Caedus in his seat. "We haven't heard anything or gotten anything from the people who went inside... I have no idea what's going on in there. No one here is inclined to go in, but you came late... you could probably go if you wanted to."

The short nose crinkled as Eros eyed the portal and its aura of evil, like she smelled something bad.

"I'm going to stick here and keep an eye on what's going on. I hope we hear something soon."

"I'm not after killing myself." Methone said ambivalently. She caught admiring look and actually smiling, her arms uncrossing. "Late is better then never, it feels like." She winked.

Then she nodded to the super.

"I'm Methone, of Aurora Borealis. Nice to meet you."

It was a strange thing, to try and put a single response to Caedus's quiet question. Hvergelmir coughed into her hands a few times, gathering her thoughts, and let her eyes rest on Teide and the other new page -- Irkalla -- before getting her thoughts in order.

It was a fair question, what Caedus had asked. It deserved a fair answer . . . even if her answer was not the same as Teide's, or frightened the younger girl. Even if her answer was hard to hear.

"I'm a sworn non-combatant," she began, her voice scratchy and congested with sickness. "Even healthy, I'm a hindrance in times like these. But my choice has nothing to do with -- " she coughed -- "my vows, or whether or not I'm willing to extend my trust to you. This attack was foolish and unplanned. If everyone in there goes to the slaughter -- which they might -- " Hvergelmir paused to catch her breath. " -- someone has to stay behind to carry on. As long as someone still lives, there's still hope. Surely you can understand that."

Maybe they would all be dead soon, like Ida.

Hvergelmir looked around, taking in the scant few faces around her. They looked bleak, worried -- as hollowed out as she herself felt. Would the people who'd gone into the portal truly return? If not, was Hvergelmir looking at all that would remain of their once great cause, after everyone else she'd relied upon went bravely off to die?

The Cosmos knight stared at Teide's anxious profile for a while longer, soaking in the pervasiveness of the younger girl's worry. I wish I could protect you from this, she thought, not for the first time. I wish I could protect you from all of this. You were born for a much better, much more beautiful world, and I have no power to give it to you. I'm so sorry.

Hvergelmir wiped at her runny nose with the hem of her cloak and sniffled. She glanced at the portal briefly before turning her eyes to Caedus again, searching in the ever-black shadows of that impenetrable cloak.

"There are times when there is only one way forward -- when we either fight and win, or die to the last man. But most of the time, life is full of more choices than we can imagine . . . and we have to be prepared to live on and keep trying, even if the way is long and the journey is painful."

Hvergelmir reached out for Teide's hand, to give it a reassuring squeeze.

Esquiline, Venus Page

Esquiline found herself leaning forward, listening to Hvergelmir with careful attention. A sworn non-combatant? So she really chose to not fight, no matter what? But what if sh was attacked? What if her friends were in danger? Did she really not help?

She couldn't leave it alone. The page was far too curious. So she sidled over shyly, until she was within speaking distance of Hvergelmir.

"Um, excuse me." she all but mumbled to the woman. "I'm sorry I was evesdropping..but I have to ask. You swore that you wouldn't fight? No matter what?"

Teide Knight of the Cosmos

Caedus's question left Teide cold. She considered Hvergelmir's reply very carefully - her sister had taken a vow of non-violence, and while Teide had sworn no such oath, she sought to emulate the older knight wherever she could. "If something came through the portal," she said softly, "It would only be because you opened it in the first place. Like kicking a beehive. If a youma or - or an officer - came through, even if hundreds came through, it would be justified retaliation."

She hadn't liked this plan from the start. She liked it even less now that Caedus seemed to be trying to rally an army. He'd sent their strongest fighters through to attack Metallia, and now he expected the rest of them to fall before him, to protect him?

I would fight to protect myself, she thought, fingers twisting around Hvergelmir's. And my sister, because she cannot protect herself, but I would not fight to protect you.

She looked to Hvergelmir, wide-eyed, and then gestured to her ring, hoping to convey the need to communicate without Caedus overhearing them - but then, another woman addressed Hvergelmir, and Teide dropped her gaze to the ground - she didn't want to be rude.

Celsus Knight of Chronos

His gaze turned, rather sharply, to face Caedus again.

"Are you telling me that you expect something will come through the portal?" Celsus asked, and his voice wavered slightly, galling him. His face was still pale and drawn, his entire body held with a rigid sort of tension that was not entirely from the situation at hand.

A whisper went through his mind, a soft hiss of a voice.

As if you could do anything to stop it, the Code mocked.

"Do you expect us to fight for you?" Celsus asked quietly, trying to ignore it. "To defend you? We have no reason to do so, not yet. You seem to be content in sitting back and letting everyone else do your bidding for you, while you rest on your laurels and expect the outcome you do not deserve."

It was said not, with heated anger, exactly, but a frustration that was deeply settled. Celsus lifted his shaking fingers, pressed them into his hair and gripped tightly, trying to alleviate some of the nausea that was rising thickly in his throat. Denebola and Corvus were still beside him, and another man had joined them, but Celsus did not raise his head, instead just focused on Caedus.

"You have given us - me, I cannot speak for others - " (Alone, alone, alone, taunted his head) " - no reason to trust that this is not all just some enormous trap where we are entirely in your mercy."

Sailor Altais

Altais perked up at the darker senshi's introduction of herself and another man among them! Though Celsus didn't seem interested, didn't stop the senshi of shockwaves from grinning ear to ear.

"Those are what uh..American's call, s**t shows?" He nodded, but to Dene, he casually took her hand and squeezed. "It's too late for me to leave now." He simply said, and looked to Corvus. "Nice to meet you! I'm a friend of Dene's, My name is Altais." His eyes twinkled and he grinned, "I am senshi of shockwaves. If something comes through, I guess I can be useful yeah?"

Hvergelmir regarded Teide uneasily. Her own face was drawn with tiredness and worry, but gentle, for all that. Not judging. "Retaliation is never justified," she corrected softly. "Revenge is never noble. When we act in anger -- or when we fail to act, when we abandon others in their time of need as a form of vengeance for disappointing us -- we are acting from the least part of ourselves. Believe in yourself," she suggested, "and in the good you can do."

Hvergelmir tapped her signet ring to activate its holo interface, to show Teide she was willing to open up a private communication, as she'd suggested. Hvergelmir didn't think that letting Teide's fear bleed into frustrated anger would help the situation -- but she didn't want to make the other knight feel discouraged or distrusted, either.

Talk to me, she typed in.

Aloud, she cleared her scratchy throat and said, "I'm afraid too. But my fears will not govern my actions -- my convictions will. That's what I choose. Choosing that makes me feel strong."

She held the pink-haired knight's gaze for a while, before averting her eyes to let Teide key in her reply with her signet ring.

Hvergelmir regarded the Venus page who'd spoken to them with interest. "I swore an oath not to knowingly raise arms against a Negaverse agent while they fight in defense of the Earth from alien conquest. The cause they fight for is false -- but pure. Many of them are good people. Someday they'll see the truth -- but until then, I'd rather not kill someone for having the misfortune of being lied to."

The pretty lady's reply pulled a smirk out of Eros and she shifted closer as the others began to talk.

"Yeah, I'm not either, which is why I'm out here and not in there." She laughed, finally reaching out to offer her hand to the glowing Eternal. "Methone? I'm Eros. Um... of Passion, since you offered yours."

She caught the wink and brightened considerably, her smile a few degrees warmer and more inviting.

"We're probably going to be here for a bit. I don't see a mass invasion taking less than a few hours, at the least." The small woman gestured at the hooded figure with her chin. "That guy was asking what we would do if something came through the portal that wasn't our people. I figured we'd probably squash it, if its a youma... even if I'm not really the fighting sort."

"I don't suppose you're one of those amazing women who are both gorgeous AND deadly martial artists?" Eros laughed. "We might need some help."

Caedus seemed a bit surprised and turned his gaze away from the portal for a second to look at Celsus. "No," he said after a second. "Neither do I anticipate something will come from this portal, nor do I expect you to defend me. If it comes to that, I will defend myself and this area. I survived alone for a thousand years. I think I can manage another hour. I was concerned for you."

He seemed wary, and disappointed; he slumped a bit, as if retreating into himself.

"I asked for no more than what you were willing to give," he said quietly. "I did not force anyone to collect energy. I did not force anyone to enter my portal. I made an offer. I did not think anyone would help me if I did not provide an exchange. I thought attacking your enemy, who I admit is my own, might be a step in the right direction. I do not criticize any of you for not trusting me. I do not criticize you for not wanting to join. Or even for staying to ensure I do not betray you. This, I understand. But I intend to hold this portal open, until your friends escape. Hopefully with success."

He seemed reluctant to eat anything, though nodded to Scylla gratefully. He seemed on edge, and did not want to allow himself any luxuries when there were such emotions in the group.

He answered Esquiline softly, "I cannot choose who comes in or out. It is a door and anyone may walk through it. If something comes through, I will do my best to keep the portal open. And if it meant I needed to fight it alone, I would. If something comes through and is not an ally, I do not ask you to fight. You may leave. Or watch. Or chastise me for opening a portal for the comrades of yours that wanted to strike."

He seemed almost distant, now; he was not oblivious to the conversation between Hvergelmir and Teide, but if he was not looking at them.

He did not seem to hold ill will against them, or Eros or Denebola or Corvus, but he seemed to have withdrawn significantly. He sat, hunched, eyes locked onto the portal. He would have seemed entirely statuesque if he did not occasionally blink—and if he did not say, "If you do not wish to be here, I do not ask you to stay. Just as I do not command your allies, I do not command you, nor do I have any desire to. You are all free to do as you please. But I do not think of you as tools. I will take care of this, and I will take care of myself. Thank you."

Esquiline

"But, the Negavese use energy from people who live on Earth to accomplish this goal." She said. "Though I guess that would be the same as us using power from our Wonder or planet to do the same thing.." she trailed off sheepishly, realizing she sounded terribly rude, questioning one's motives and all that.

"I'm sorry if I was being intrusive." she said. "For what it's worth, I really admire that you are able to keep yourself from fighting. I'm sure it is a hard thing to do, especially when faced with someone who doesn't share the same sentiment."

She glanced at Caedus, feeling a little sorry for him. Here he was, holding ope their friends' escape route, and they were treating him coldly. What was it her grandfather would say in this situation?

Don't spit on the guy holding the rope.

..her grandfather wasn't the best with phrases.

"Thank you Caedus...for holding open the portal. I know it can't be easy." she said, feeling strange for complimenting him in a cloud of mistrust.

Irkalla, Page of Cosmos

She had been surreptitiously watching the two individuals who bore colorful outfits similar to her own. Inadvertently they had given off a "do not disturb" aura to the page. Irkalla had been holding out for a chance to maybe ask a few small questions but it seemed as if she would have to wait for another night when the situation was not as dire.

Uncertainty aside, the Cosmos page was trying to take everything in. This whole event was quite a learning experience for one who was new to being a protector of Earth. That didn't quite sound right but Irkalla would stick with it for now.

Eyeing Caedus once more Irkalla sighed. Her gaze traveled around to each individual whom had stayed behind. Was it folly to continue waiting for something to happen? The idea of going through the portal this late in the game didn't appeal to her and nothing would surely come of it. Her hand came up to tuck her hair behind her ears as she found herself pacing back and forth around the clearing. What kept her rooted to this place?

"Nice to meet you too!" She flashed Irkalla a friendly, if not slightly awkward smile. Not a single bit of this made a bean's worth of sense as to why anyone would enter a Portal to Darkness. Well... Maybe if they'd had no other choice. Maybe it was like the Inquisitor pulling their party into a Rift. Maybe --

She shook her head, snapping herself out of the mental train of thought she had started down, not wanting to think about making the terrible choice between whether or not to leave Hawke or Alistair in the Fade again.

"Do you think everyone who went in there is going to come back out? Were there a lot of them? Have you been at this whole Page thing for long?"
