The Only Black Uke

Now it was Ku’s turn to listen -- fascinated by the new information she was getting here. It seemed that a Elaria girl like her had a lot of jigsaw-puzzle work to do in order to make any sense of the world she lived in. A piece from one person, a piece from another, everyone seeming to have their own way of looking at things and their own topics they liked to focus on (and ones they fought hard to avoid). Here, for the first time, she heard the explanation of Earthlings and how they made their babies, without either trees or blooms.

“Eeeeeeeew!” She shrieked, giggling even as she held her hands up to her ears (although of course she had no intent in missing any of this story. “That’s gross! Ew, ew, ewwwww. They grow out of tumors? That’s just weird.”

But it had to be true! Naqenni was right, the Earthlings didn’t have a special tree. And it made sense, also, what she said about them not being able to come from rocks, what with rocks not being properly living things anyhow, and Earthlings being alive, albeit not very pleasantly so. So if it wasn’t trees, and it wasn’t rocks (and rocks and trees were most of what a kid understood about the world), the bursting bloody tumor story made the most sense, really. Although Ku really wasn’t sure she wanted to think about it for all that much longer. What did males look like, anyway?

She pursed her lips at Naquenni’s next resolution, though. It wasn’t that she didn’t disagree, but… she had been thinking about this recently, and…

“Aren’t there… more of them, though? I mean, even if they’re all stupid, don’t you worry it’ll be hard to get rid of them all?”

“It is weird,” Naqenni parroted, her lips curving up at the corners in spite of herself with satisfaction and milky teal eyes bright with interest—Ku at least listened, and seemed engaged. This was better than a handful of adults she knew, and inspired her to nod with vigorous encouragement as Ku agreed. “It’s disgusting.”

She blinked, though, giving leery pause for a half moment at the next comment—and then deciding it wasn’t really disagreement and shrugging it off with a grunt and a distempered flick of her antennae.

“There are lots,” she conceded. “There are lots of bugs, though, too. Real gross ones. All the sort that need to be killed off—they make more and more and more unless you mush them hard or poison them all. Just ‘cause there are a lot, doesn’t mean you can’t do it. They’re all smaller and weak…” She shifted her weight, glancing out over the water as her lips pursed, pensive, and she curled her toes. “We’ll have more than we do now, anyhow. It’s just all…” She flicked a finger at the surface of the water, as though punishing it for the transgressions of the world. “Waiting.”

She puffed.

“I hate waiting.” Tipping her head, she shrugged. “It’ll all happen, though.” She glanced to her sister. “I hope you don’t think they’ll be hard to kill. Maybe we can think of a good way to get rid of a lot at once and make it faster.”

“Well, you can’t kill off all bugs.” Ku lifted her hands in puzzlement at this comparison. She didn’t mean to be argumentative, not really -- what sense was there in standing up for earthlings, after all? But the bug comparison, that gave her some pause. There were lots of bugs, and there was no getting away with that fact! Some days it seemed like there were millions of them, buzzing and biting and crawling all over you, and as many as you whacked and squished and batted away there never seemed to be any less of them.

Besides, some of them were tasty. And others weren’t even all that gross, but cute and fuzzy with funny little antenna and lots of wriggly little legs. But that was beside the point, wasn’t it? Naquenni wasn’t talking about earthlings.

“Well, it’s not that I don’t think I couldn’t kill them all.” She ventured finally, flicking at the water as well, thinking nothing of this gross overstatement. “I guess I just don’t know if I’d want to, you know. I mean, some bugs are gross, but it’s still fun to watch them fight and stuff like that. Maybe it’d be fun to keep some earthlings around. I dunno. They have cool wars and things. I like that. I’m getting tired of all the grown-ups around here, sometimes I think I’d rather go out and meet some earthlings just to have something new to talk about. I could always kill them later, I guess.”

Naqenni gave a momentary, purse-lipped squint. "You could kill all bugs if you did it right," she blurted, tongue moving - as happened frequently enough - before her mind was fully on board. Not that it mattered. It was true. "No one has ever tried to kill them all. And they have some uses…" Her antennae flicked, buggish eyes surveying the darker portions of the cavern again. "Anything that can die could be 'all' killed if someone did it right."

Her sister's amended statement was easier to swallow.

She shrugged, and then nodded - an understated concession, but agreement nonetheless. "Some bugs could live. I don't think earthlings have anything important to say. But maybe you could make them fight each other until one died, if you were bored." For an instant, her teeth flashed. "That would be fun. Then after, you could kill the other one." She shifted, stirring the water as she moved and curling her toes to inspect the bottom, under the veil of dark riverwater. "Maybe they would say interesting things before dying."

i think we're done here? thnx. <3 <3 <3

“No you couldn’t.” Ku frowned, now for the sake of arguing more than anything. “Some of them are teeny-tiny-weeny. And some of them are poisonous and make your skin go all bubbly and gross if you touch them. And what about the ones that fly? They could just fly somewhere secret where nobody is and live there. No one has ever tried to kill them all ‘cause it would be dumb. Everybody would tell them so.”

Well, anyhow -- at least on the issue of keeping earthlings around for entertainment, her sister had agreed with. And death matches did seem pretty fun.

“Yes, let’s do that!” She agreed, as if this was something that the two could set off and do immediately. Perhaps it felt that way -- they were the special ones, anyway. This land was meant for them, and when they grew up, they could do things just as they wanted. Except, of course, when they didn’t all want the same thing, as exemplified (briefly, and in light spirits) by the present discussion.

“I dunno what’s the point of killing the winners, though. They’d be the most fun to watch! But I guess we can figure out all the rules later. I’m hungry, wanna go home?”
