That was what he fixated on? Zahavah rolled her eyes slightly. “I have my family,” she explained, cheerfully. “My mate, my children, and their mates. And of course, you, as the family healer. And Gregor and Midagi, who keep our family safe. And their mates, of course. And yours if you ever find someone you care for… and any children you all might have, of course would be welcomed and cared for as much as my own…”

“That… sounds like a herd,” Curador noted, feeling his confusion grow. Family and herds could sometimes be very similar, he knew. But he had always thought the difference between the two was blood relations. Zahavah’s children and her mate were her family. The children’s mates, Curador, and any other guardians Zahavah had should be herd… shouldn’t they? “Or rather… I suppose a herd of extended family?” He could wrap his head around that, at least. Family was harder to be kicked out of than a herd, so maybe the way she viewed her herd was better? He could feel a headache coming on.

Zahavah found herself staring at the healer for a moment, confused both by his need to put a label on her family, and by his definition. She supposed that he was right. The soquilis in her territory were like family to her. So…. Okay… “Sure, I guess that works,” she agreed, thoughtfully. “Would it make you feel better to call us a herd?”

Curador nodded. He considered explaining to her that he liked things to be neat, but quickly discarded the idea. Not only did he doubt that he’d be able to get the words out, but he had a feeling that Zahavah wouldn’t understand it. He was talking to a mini mare who ran a herd like the matriarch of a family, which he supposed she was. She loved a full sized soq, had several children with him, which Curador was still trying to figure out, and, from what he had seen, wasn’t shy about welcoming others into her unusual little family. Neat and Zahavah definitely didn’t belong in the same sentence. For a moment, Curador wondered if he would be able to handle this strange little herd after all. He liked things to make sense… but then… he didn’t make sense, did he? He wasn’t a traditional healer. Maybe he needed to try and live a bit more like Zahavah did and be less concerned with lables…

“Alright. Then sure, my herd’s the only one in the valley,” Zahavah retorted, thoughtfully. She didn’t think that slapping a label on her family would make a difference, but if it made Curador feel better, she could go along with it. Maybe it would make him feel more at ease with her. It would be nice if she could talk to him without having to worry about every little thing she said to him.

He smiled slightly at her, almost shyly. Curador realized he probably shouldn’t be so happy about such a small, insignificant concession. Especially when he was beginning to think that he shouldn’t be so concerned with labels. Well, maybe he should start off small. Baby steps, and all. He glanced shyly away from him as he mumbled, “Thank you…” that… was too vague. “For everything,” he added, still mumbling. He was reaching his limit of social interaction. It wasn’t that he didn’t like interactions, but this conversation had been going too well, and it was making him nervous.

Zahavah noticed him getting extra fidgety. She smiled a bit. “No problem. Like I said, let me know if you need anything. I’ll send Nova by to check on you…” she hesitated a moment before shrugging and plunging on ahead. He’d have to get used to her eventually. She wasn’t going to just leave him alone. “I’ll try to check on you once a week, unless you need me for anything, okay?” She didn’t bother adding that she might check on him more often. He was provoking her protective instincts in a way that usually only her kids did. Sometimes Pavlov, but that stallion couldn’t be left alone for more than five minutes.

Curador felt oddly relieved, and then felt guilty about feeling relieved. It wasn’t so much that he was happy to see her go as he was starting to worry about her staying. No, that wasn’t right… He shook his head slightly. “Thank you,” he said again. He had a feeling he’d be saying those words to her a lot. “If there’s anything that I can do for you or yours, of course, let me know,” he added, quickly, though he had the distinct feeling he might have said that already.

“Don’t worry, I will,” Zahavah assured him with a chuckle. Deciding that the first visit with her new healer had been relatively successful, she left him to his garden. She did make a mental note to talk to Nova, however. She would be better prepared for Curador’s questions the next time she came to visit him.

Curador watched her go before shaking his head again. He studied his garden one more time before spotting a couple little weeds poking through the ground. Some weeds could be beneficial. This was most certainly not one of those weeds. As he plucked the offending little plants free from the earth, he thought about that strange conversation he’d just had with Zahavah. He made a promise to himself to try and be less concerned about labels. No doubt his life would go smoother if he wasn’t always trying to make sense of the mini mare. He was comforted, however, by what she had assured him of. This garden, the plants that he had so painstakingly planted, was his. He believed her when she said that he would be in charge of any other healers that might settle there. While he wasn’t certain he could boss anyone else around, he was reassured that no one would take his place in the herd away. That was all that he really needed.
