Micah wasn't really awake. He was being jostled and he couldn't breathe very well and everything was fuzzy around the edges, and everything hurt. He'd been ... what? Fighting? Something about fighting, and a vague and half-formed thought about hitting his head being bad because something about bruises. Nova was alternating between hissing and calling his name, but he was having trouble paying attention.

A jolt, and another larger jolt, and then his face was slapped, and he groaned in confusion, opening his eyes with a large effort and squinting. There was a person crouching over him, and for a moment he was relieved because someone had come to help him, and then the face over him resolved into red and white hair and a bunch of scar and his eyes came open fast, because this was probably not help. "Ssshhhhit," he heard himself say, and his hands scrabbled for purchase on the cold ground.

As Micah scrabbled, Rep moved to set his boot on the other man's ribcage and pin him with it.

"No no." he said. "No ******** running away. How can I respect you if you ******** run away."

And he leaned, only hard enough to press the breath from the other man's lungs before letting him breathe again.

"Can you feel me now?" he asked, and it was with a strange grin and the air of someone who would not react well to being defied.

He's nuts, Micah thought dizzily, and well yeah duh, and didn't know he was THIS nuts, and he stilled like a rabbit trapped by a coyote, the white-eyed stillness of something that knows it can't escape. The boot pressed the air out of him, and when the pressure was released he gasped frantically for air, unable to help it but otherwise staying still.

"Can, yeah," he sputtered hoarsely, and wished fervently that he hadn't said anything about dragging anyone out of the wards, because he didn't recognize where he was and he was pretty sure that that was exactly what had happened. Nova?

No shield, she whispered, sounding small and scared. No be dumb. No die, I not go sleep again.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 26, 2016 3:47 pm

Rep looked pleased by the look of fear, seeming to get something from the other man's helplessness. He wondered if he felt the fear and disgust now, if he realised his mortality in a way the wards had shielded him from. It wasn't fair that halloween got to experience this, that hunters were forever denied the mortal terror in a creature's eyes. Halloween didn't understand mortality, you could end them and they would dissipate without knowledge of what had even happened to them or how permanent it was.

People were different, millions of years of not dying was written into their very DNA, written into the blood and flesh that made them up, a finely tuned machine which knew when it was staring survival in the face, and he loved it. He loved to see it, to watch that animal part of every person look back at him, beyond the smiling and joking, stripped back beyond the hobbies and pleasantries.

"Good." he said.

"Now." and he pressed again, leaning closer, blue eyes fixed and keen on the other man. "I want you to ******** say that you take your stupid s**t back. I want you to say that all along, you were the ******** retard."

There was the urge to say something stupid. There was always the urge to say something stupid, right there pushing itself right past the slow build of actual terror. Micah opened his mouth.

NO! Nova shrieked.

Micah closed his mouth and swallowed hard. He swallowed his pride past a sore, pained throat, and made himself say, "I .. take it back. I was the ... " It stuck in his throat, burned his mouth. "I was the retard." Some of the fear burned slowly away from the back of his eyes with fury at this humiliation. He wasn't strong enough to spit in Rep's face and refuse, not and live through the experience, but someday he would be.

Now, a while back (before wards) Harrison had been assigned to the training fields to scrape up anybody who needed scraping and get some field medic practice in.

Rep still practiced, yeah, but he did it real grudgingly. He hardly ever sparred. The wards deterred him more than anything ever had, now that all the fun and blood was sucked out of it.

And it wasn't like Rep wasn't fighting, anymore.

Or that there wasn't blood.

It just wasn't on the island.

So when Rep agreed to his first spar in a while, Harrison was on the suspicious side. He headed on down to see what was probably a pretty boring thrashing (most folks didn't last past hit #4) with some mugs of hot cocoa.

It took him a while because he had to make the cocoa, and he was doing a lot of snow-wading.

Oh it felt good to hear the little s**t say it, to snarl out that he took it back and ate his words, to watch dignity get set aside in favour of survival. He felt powerful, invincible, as if he'd taken something more than a victory from their fight. There was always this moment, a moment where it didn't matter that he wasn't beautiful, that he wasn't female, that he wasn't all the things he would never be. He was hideous and terrifying and he could make even the perfect people kneel.

"Too ******** right." Rep said smugly. "I like you better like this. Much more ******** agreeable."

But he didn't move away, seemingly unable to just concede that he'd had his fun and made his point. Hard wired into Rep was something dark and impossibly curious and for every inch he gained in ground, securing it and deeming it safe, he knew there was another inch he would never know if he'd have gained if he quit.

"And what do you think of me?" he purred, husky and ominous, staring at the man under his foot.

"You're a -- " a pervert, a b*****d, an a*****e -- Micah didn't actually want to die, and he swallowed the insults, gritting his teeth on them. He felt sick, and he didn't know if he felt sick because he'd been unconscious or because of the pressure on his ribs or because of the fear and disgust and humiliation and fury all murkily swirled together inside him. "You're a .... dangerous man," he forced out, and hoped that would satisfy Rep, hoped it would be taken as a compliment.

There wasn't any movement out there, but there was a small crater in the snow on one of the fields. Harrison made his way towards that.

He didn't get too close to the edge, the snow was all powdery and not tightly-packed and crumbled easy. He got far enough so he could make sure nobody was down there.

There were a bunch of scuffled footprints and trails, but one lead off the field.

Harrison squinted at it.

Just one? By itself?

Harrison sure hoped the other guy wasn't buried out here somewhere in a ******** snowy tomb. There were ways to die even with the wards.

"Rep!" he called out into the blustery weather.

Rep might have heard a faint sound on the wind.

Like the voice of his conscience.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 26, 2016 4:45 pm

A dangerous man. Rep didn't like the sound of that, part of it made him feel good, like he was powerful and threatening, but it also made him sound unpredictable and crazy, things which were sensitive issues and therefore unwelcome.

He set his lips in a thin and irritated line. "No." he said. "No ******** good enough." and once again the pressure was on, this time longer and all the while with the thought he could just pop the guy's arm out of his socket couldn't he? It'd pop right back in again.

"Compliments midget boy. Real nice ones. Maybe if you are good.." and there was nothing nice about his smile.

It was more than lucky that his expression faltered and he looked absolutely mortified in the direction of the faint yell. His eyes went large and it was Micah's turn to see fear in the expression of his captor. "Ah s**t." he said anxiously and stepped off of the other hunter, seizing his hand to pull him roughly to his feet, dusting snow and bootprints off of him.

"Oh..err HEY ACE. I'm OVER HERE." he said. "Just helping this ******** loser out post-spar. The usual. Yawn am I right?"

Rep was a terrible liar when it came to Harrison and it was evident if not from his phrasing but from the very unmistakable shrill tone he said it in.

s**t s**t s**t, it hadn't been good enough, what did Rep want him to say, how much of this was he going to have to stand and would anything be enough? Micah was starting to think he wasn't getting out of this, and his hands lifted to grab at thin air as threads of darkness started to wind their way into the corners of his vision, the boot on his chest keeping him from getting any good air. The panicky terror of being unable to breathe robbed him of thought, and he barely heard what Rep was saying, heard nothing else.

Suddenly the boot was off him and he was being hauled to his feet and dusted down as he gasped for breath, shaking and folding over to prop himself up with his hands on his knees. Someone had come looking. Someone had come looking for Rep? Micah didn't bother with saying anything. He straightened up slowly and just breathed.

Great. More snow trudging. Harrison didn't bother tracing the voice in the wind and just followed the big trail through the drift.

Rep was grinning in a way that looked like he was going to be adding a lot of nervous "mates" to every other sentence.

"Usually they get knocked into the ground. Not 10 yards out," Harrison said suspiciously.

Nonetheless, he handed Rep a mug.

He handed Micah a mug too. It was one of Jordan's.

Harrison didn't think he'd mind, since he had a billion. People had somehow gotten into their heads that Jordan was a "coffee" guy, which he was, just that every holiday he got about a hundred thousand coffee gifts. The mugs stacked up after a while.

Harrison took a sip.

"That's five dollars," he informed Micah off-handedly, looking at the mug that had been pushed in the trainee's hands.

Rep did indeed stammer nervously for a bit. "Well he like er like fell and like skidded and it was just a big old ******** mess like, completely ******** disastrous and s**t man." He beamed at Micah before looking back to Harrison and seizing hold of the cocoa like it was a lifeline.

"The kid was a ******** arsehole to me, but its ok he made it up we are mates now." and he took a nervous sip of the drink and made a face. "You didnae put enough sugar in it." he said.

PostPosted: Tue Jan 26, 2016 5:20 pm

There was a mug being offered to Micah and he took it automatically, listening to the conversation between the other two with deep confusion. The rapid 180 Rep had done from crazed predator to anxious pretense of innocence was completely baffling, and Micah just wasn't currently okay enough to handle trying to figure out what was going on. He'd managed to take two sips of cocoa before he was informed that there was a surcharge attached.

Silently, he dug out his wallet and fumbled a ten-dollar bill out. He didn't have any fives, and he only had two ones, and American money mostly looked the same anyway, and he didn't honestly care right at this instant. It was all just too surreal. He put his wallet back in his pocket and held the money out to Harrison without argument or comment.

Harrison accepted the ten and very carefully dug a five out of his wallet, giving Micah his exact change.

He replaced the wallet and patted his pocket.

"Well I didn't put maple syrup, pixie sticks, and half a dozen kit kats in there," Harrison said, "but its the last sugar outpost you're going to get without a walk.

He eyed up Micah.

"You look....intact," he hedged.
