“Good. Knowing your weaknesses is important. If you know them well then you know how to overcome them. Right now you need make sure you become stronger, that should be your main goal. The bow requires excellent form and you are lacking.” If she could not shoot an arrow properly because her arms did not have enough strength then there was no se teaching her to begin with. Zandala was willing, but Naqenni also needed to make progress on her own.
“If I am not busy I do not mind teaching you, though know that we will mainly work on strengthening. When the string of the bow will be easier for you to pull, everything else will be easier to teach.” It was hard on the arms to hold the position; Zandala wondered how long Naqenni could hold it for. Though that would perhaps be a lesson for the next time they met. “Soon I will become a blade and may be a bit more occupied, but Whenever I have free time I will try.”

“The bow requires excellent form and you are lacking.”
Naqenni felt her shoulders stiffen, eyelids narrowing to a pinched squint as her lips pursed. Granted, she was beginning to get very used to the fact that most all her older cousins on the island apparently delighted in highlighting her supposed ‘flaws,’ but still there was the immediate temptation to shriek that she had never done it before even once on her own until now—but perhaps that hadn’t been evident. Perhaps she had done well enough that the older alk assumed that she had had at least some practice, and that after it, her form was still lacking.
Naqenni rubbed a toe at the earth, crimping and releasing it. This was a comforting thought. Her posture eased, and she listened. At length, she rolled her shoulders, stretching the used muscle there with a shrug.
“I’ll practice,” she said. “I always practice. Mother Kasama has a bow of her own, too…so I’ll be better before I find you again.” A moment’s pause slipped in there, and in it, a question occurred to her which wasn’t even remotely her ‘business’, but had earned such an amusing reaction last time she asked it of a woman, she opted to go for it, the corners of her lips just barely curving up smugly. “Do you have a lady?”

“I see that anger in you,” Zandala finally said making her observations clear in a calm manor. “I understand this may be frustration for you to hear but you need to understand that to us, the Alkidikes, you are supposed to be our better version. We were sent here with the oracles blessing and were given Elzira who gave us you. You cannot afford to be weak, especially not you and your two other sisters. That is why we push you to be better, that is why you must push yourself to be better than us in every which way possible.”
Naqenni’s next question caught her off guard and if possible Zandala blushed the tiniest bit.
“I do not,” she said slowly. “There are sisters that I value very highly, however I have not found a partner I found suitable for myself yet.” Why of all things to ask Naqenni was asking such a question she had no idea! “You shouldn’t bother with such things, you’re far too young.” She scolded her. She couldn’t believe what she’d just been asked! “Though, if I did have a partner I would be raising a daughter of my very own right now,” Zandala paused before admitting, “I wish I had been offered the honor of taking care of one of the first Elaria.”

Naqenni gave a derisive snort through her nose. “We’re not supposed to be,” she said. “We are, and I’m not weak. Everyone keeps saying I ‘shouldn’t’ be, and reminding me to push, but I am and I’ve only just started my training. No one would let me, younger, and I’m still not allowed to use real weapons, so it gets boring being told again and again: You can’t be weak. You can’t be weak. I know it already.”
She pushed to a stand, scowling, but eased again in her tone and posture when the older woman responded to the latter commentary. This, at least, seemed a sure way to throw her ‘wise’ trainers off guard. Her expression reflected her amusement.
“I’m not bothering with it,” she said. “I just think it’s funny. My mother, Izari, says it does a soul good and grounds a person. Maybe if you and your sisters got together more often, you could focus on raising blooms while me and my sisters train, and you wouldn’t have to be so worried all the time.” With that, Naqenni stretched, pulling her arms up over herself and behind her head. Then, with a half trot back, she said, “I’ll find you later, maybe—good luck finding a girlfriend!” and without another word, she was darting off, towards home.

“No one your age is allowed to use real weapons,” Zandala mused. “Not even me.” The Alkidike rose finally languid like and grabbed her bow and quiver. She scowled at Naqenni’s words but the youngling had already gone off. The Alkidike sighed, eyes narrowing at the disappearing form of the Elaria. Maybe she would get together with another sister and have a bloom of her own! Though Zandala was the more practical type, she’d want a strong sister so that Elzira gave them strong children. Someone who was worthy of raising her daughters with her. Zandala shook her head, no time to think about such things, it was time to get back to the village.
