Nell flopped backwards. "You didn't plan ahead. This is why you sucked at the Boy Scouts." Did they let people order doubles of commemorative t-shirts? She had some... from like, sets and stuff. Mom had some of them. But those weren't exactly rewards for anything, they just sort of happened. "Anyway, I like dealing with you. You being away with the army sucked! Mom's nice and all, but she's Mom, and all she wants to talk about is finance classes anymore, and how I should have a hobby. Like I'm ******** Miss America. Does this even count as an apartment? It's like... a room. You're renting a room."

"It has a kitchen and a bathroom," Carson replied defensively, "so yes, it's an apartment. They call it an efficiency. I do most of my cooking over at Elke's." She was flopping around too much, and it was making him kind of seasick. Carson picked up his laptop and migrated over to his desk. "If you write home and tell Mom that I'm living in abject poverty or whatever, I will end you," he suggested. The apartment was sort of a rebellion against the luxury he'd been raised with. That, and he was used to not having a lot of stuff, and he was in no hurry to acquire a ton of things. "Tell her the guns are a hobby," he suggested. "I have a range I like. I'll take you."

"The kitchen is in the same room as your bedroom, and bathrooms don't count as a separate room, ergo: it's a room." Nell rolled her eyes. "I'm not going to write home. Holy s**t, what is it, the 1930s? Shall I also take my admirers to the discotheque for the lindy hop? I mean, what the heck? At least I get--" She stopped. She narrowed her eyes at Carson. The corners of her mouth curled into a slow, smarmy smile. "You do most of your cooking at your girlfriend's," she said, sing-song. "Do you sleep there, too? Are you gonna move in with her? Don't tell me it's not serious, you guys have a baking startup." As if baking startups were any worse than hte regular kind.

Carson shrugged, a bit exaggerated - while he and Elke were bound together by cosmic fate or something, their relationship didn't strike him as having a lot of the hallmarks people thought of when they thought of serious relationships. Like, they didn't even have sex? But they were really good friends and very compatible cuddlers so the sex thing was probably not as much of an issue as he was thinking it might be. "Yes, I guess you could say it's serious?" he said tentatively. You didn't make it to your one-year anniversary in a relationship you didn't really care about, after all. "But I'm not planning on moving in with her." Mostly, he thought, because Elke still lived with her parents, and he didn't want to add himself to that equation. To Nell, he said, "I like having my own space. It's a nice change from living in a barrack."

"You should tell Mom if the relationship is all serious and stuff," said Nell, scooting off the bed and picking up her backpack. "She'll be happy. Then she'll invite you home for Easter because she wants to meet your girlfriend. And then I won't be stuck as the only child in a houseful of Mom and Dad, and thus the target of everyone's questions." She arched her eyebrows. "I'm gonna tell her if you won't."

Carson groaned at the idea of spending Easter back home. "Or maybe she'll come visit and spare us both having to spend time around Dad," he suggested. What was there even to do in Destiny City that Jenn would enjoy, though? Her tastes tended to be very, very upscale and did not at all involve going places with astronomical crime rates and reports of domestic terrorism. Actually, he was kind of surprised she'd signed off on letting Nell come. "But fine, fine, I'll tell her. I'm due for a phone call, anyway." He would not be winning any son of the year trophies any time soon, that was for sure. His focus shifted to her backpack. "You headed out? Let's grab dinner. I'm due for a break."

Nell sighed. "Maybe," she said. "But I doubt it. She didn't even come help me set up." She grinned at her brother, and then pushed his door open. "Sure, but I'm buying. That's a rule now, bye."

"Then we'll have to work on changing her mind," said Carson, following Nell out. One day, he would convince his sister that he was not flat broke - but today was not that day.
