He felt the consistent throb against his skull, fighting desperately against the whispers that hissed through his mind. Celsus put his fingers to his temple and massaged them, ignoring the tremor, trying to remember what he was doing, why he was here.
He shook his head, and it dizzied him. He felt sick.
"Because," whispered Celsus, "This is all I know. And I haven't forgotten what you did to me."
It wasn't revenge, not really. But it wasn't not revenge, either. Celsus closed his eyes briefly and then took another step back, needing, suddenly, to get away from there. To leave this entire jail, to walk out and never return and simply disappear.
Can you say the same if you had lost Tolliver in such a way?
"You won't die here," said Celsus hoarsely, as he stepped towards the cell door. "I don't work that way. But I won't treat you with kindness, either. You don't deserve that."

Jet wondered if he was supposed to feel regret or remorse for what he’d done to Celsus a year ago, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. The knight himself seemed rather unhinged. Like he didn’t really know what was going on.
“I never expected it,” Jet commented back, although since it seemed as though Celsus was retreating, he calmed against the ropes that bound him. He didn’t expect kindness from any of them, and he assumed that they would try to keep them alive as long as possible to torture them, so death wasn’t really an issue yet either.
As tempted as he was to voice his thoughts out loud, Jet bit his tongue. He wanted to warn Celsus that he would regret not killing him as he watched the knight retreat further. But he supposed the surprise would be more fun.
If he did make it out alive...
