Phoenix more than understood the gravity of what lay before him when it came to collecting a soul. Even little Zoe was not especially pleased at what would inevitably come to pass, assuming they didn't settle on something that wasn't sentient. That was looking quite appealing to Phoenix, who didn't have a mean, violent or cruel bone in his body, and hadn't the foggiest how he was supposed to cause the death of a living being for his own benefit.

As Aaron went into the details of his and Claire's Essence and soul, Phoenix listened with growing interest. "Honey and a forest spirit, eh?" He hummed, looking thoughtful. "Well, I can't wait to see what comes of it," he said genuinely, smiling at the man across from him. He truly meant it. There was something comforting about the fact that someone he knew was involved in the same process he was, even if they were just business associates with a crummy history. That was gone now, and Phoenix liked the idea that he had someone he knew he could talk to about the matter.

That brought up a new thought in his mind. "Come to think of it, I haven't met your wife, have I?" He'd heard the news when Aaron had married, but he'd never had the pleasure of meeting Claire. "We'll have to remedy that!"

"Yeah." Aaron nodded at Phoenix's assessment and took another thoughtful bite of souvlaki, his reply somewhat muffled. "Same." Claire had worked really hard; it was almost in such a way that he felt guilty about how much he was resting on his laurels. There really was not much for him to do at this point, with everything done, other than follow Claire around. Most of all, he hated how he just kept thinking of himself, and he almost frowned, had it not been for Phoenix's redirection. He swallowed, and this time he nodded, feeling a little less tense. The worst was behind him and Claire and there were only good things to look forward to - their Raevan was on the way soon enough. Despite his own feelings, he wanted this for Claire.

"Oh man.. that's true," Aaron said at length, pushing his hand through his curls. Claire was always eager to meet more people connected with the Lab, and Aaron felt eager to be the one to initiate this meeting. He and Phoenix had had a rough start of their relationship but to be going through this very same trial was somewhat of a relief to him as well. Maybe high school really was just water under the bridge. He grinned. "Yeah, we'll have to fix that. How old is your daughter now? Warning you know, Claire might want to steal her, she loves kids." He chuckled, a sound that stopped short when he felt (and heard) the faint buzz of his phone in his pocket. "s**t, sorry," he apologized as he pulled it out, and the frown he had pushed back earlier came full force. It was a text from his father: "How's the meeting going? Remember to drop the papers back off by 11"

Of course. On the greens and here he went, telling Aaron how to do his job when he could not even be bothered to do it. And not even a mention about the uncomfortable conversation earlier; he supposed he got his trait of burying unpleasantness from his own father, after all.

"Looks like we've gotta get back to it soon," he said with a lopsided smile as he held the phone up helplessly and set it back down. Still, they had made such important ground, even if it wasn't related to either Ambrosia or Holmes Produce, and Aaron did not want it all to dissipate in the coldness of purely business relations, and he grinned, indicating the plate. "Lemme finish this up real fast - thanks again, by the way - and we can do that. But." He paused and leveled his fork at Phoenix with a wider smirk. "Don't think we're done with Lab stuff, either. I'll get something set up with Claire, promise. She'll probably have a lot more to offer than I do as far as that goes." If there was one thing Aaron did keep well, it was his promises.

"She's going on seven," Phoenix answered as Aaron pulled his buzzing phone out. At the other man's apology he lifted a hand, shaking his head and smiling. "Don't worry about it." He quietly waited for him to check the text.

A sympathetic smile was offered when Phoenix saw the look on Aaron's face. Whatever it was obviously was giving him some grief. "Please, don't mention it." He laughed.

"Trust me man, you'll be hearing from me soon on the matter." It was pretty exciting to think that someone he knew was going through the same situation that he was. Even if Aaron wasn't as much as the forefront of things as his wife, Phoenix was sure he'd be going to be jumping on a roller coaster all the same. "But I'll hold you to that promise!"
