Something about the stoic, calm presence of Thraen was reassuring; Celsus wasn't entirely certain why, or how, but it undid some of the tension twisting in his chest. He gave the senshi a little nod, exhaling a breath that felt almost too thick in his throat.
With the weight of Thraen's hand on his shoulder, the world around them shifted and then they were blinking out of Earth and elsewhere; somewhere far, far away.
Somewhere Celsus had not been for a long time.
The Surrounding was not like anywhere else that Celsus had been in his life. The Rainbow Road stretched out in front of them, vibrant and colorful as the day when he had first set foot upon it, all those years ago. Somehow, it felt strangely relieving to see that it hadn't changed.
That he hadn't messed anything up. Celsus drew a breath this time, casting a glance up at Thraen.
"And so here we are," he said, managing a wan little smile. "Welcome back to the Surrounding."

The return to the strange, silent road out in the midst of stars and the much more present void wasn't comforting. Having the knight along, however, promised of some hope of time better spent than aimless walking. "Is it always quiet like this? Is it possible to fall off the path if near the edge? " "I wonder where on the road this is. How big is it?" The eternal slowly took his hand from Celsus' shoulder to turn on his heel and take in the more or less lack of ....surroundings on the Surrounding. "You mentioned last we'd met that there were many knights at once awakened of this place. But only a few you still had contact with. Is there some way for Knights of Chronos to tell if each other are present on the road? At their wonders? What determines a wonder so far out here.....? Is this road one? Since we seem to breath and adhere to it fine. The Moon Ruin and my world seem to have gravity and atmosphere in defiance of conventional science. "

Celsus gave the road a studious sort of look, as though trying to figure out whether or not it was actually possible to fall off.
"I don't...think so," he said, after a moment. "Back when all of us were kidnapped, there were a great deal of us here, and we were all about this road. I never heard of anyone falling off, I believe there's some sort of magic that confines us."
He offered Thraen another small smile. "It would be really bad if we were just falling off all over the place, knowing how clumsy some of us are..."
Celsus toyed with the hem of his sleeve, watching as Thraen stepped away; a tall and somewhat imposing figure against the black of space, but the myriad of colors beneath their feet made everything seem a bit lighter somehow. It wasn't like the oppressive reminders of his Wonder; he'd had good times on this road.
"I know that it circles all of the original Zodiac outposts, so it's at least that big," he said, though he knew that Thraen knew this. "The road used to be broken in some places. Some of the outposts were inaccessible, though I believe that might have been fixed by now. The distance between the outposts is equal, from what I've seen - like a clock of sorts - but the Knight wonders lie in between them. And of course, Chronos' castle lies somewhere in the middle."
Celsus tugged absently at a lock of his hair, considering. "I don't believe that we can tell if we're present on the road, which is rather sad, all things considering. And I've never actually considered the road a wonder, but perhaps a sort of...thread that ties all of us together, if that makes sense. A wonder that belongs to the entire Zodiac," he said, smiling slightly.

"This kidnapping sounds like it was an involved affair? You don't have to give details, but I've not encountered information about it. It sounds to have been a number of people, and specific to this place? " A gentle prodding for more information. "Was Chronos kidnapped as well? The Zodiac? or did they do the taking? " I may have still been in high school at the time? I didn't read much of the papers about Destiny City while still in Michigan. It was more important to get out, anywhere not there. Stroud was here as a connection and the University large with connections to others. Study Abroads that I never ended up looking into since becoming a senshi. " I wonder if something of the sort could be designed with technology found here. Or by the Mauvians...has any of the history of this place been refound? Why the wonders are out here? Who Chronos was and why she has a greater crystal? Who you, as knights, were? Was this all just here, or was it made...how...by who...with what. The Silver Millenium? Earlier than that? " He crouched as he chained related ideas together to press a palm flat to the surface of the road. As though a sculptor's tactile experience could help at all in determining more of the material and make of the thing, whatever it's temperature and texture.

He gave a shake of his head. "It was involved, yes, but not traumatic," said Celsus. "At least, not for me. It was strange, I remember I just...woke up, and found myself here, along with quite a few others. We spent our time getting to know each other and cleaning up the outposts, learning what was here. None of us knew where we were, but there were a lot of us."
He frowned slightly, trying to remember. "It wasn't the Zodiac that took us, or Chronos, but a few of them were there. And a few cats, I remember meeting with ********* and Zirconia for the first time during my first stay at the Surrounding."
Celsus's eyes followed Thraen as the senshi knelt, examining the road. For such a ridiculously tall man, he moved carefully, and Celsus absently folded his arms across his chest, tapping a finger against his chin.
"I haven't heard of any history, though I'd like to find out why our Wonders are so far out here. I don't even know where exactly this is, other than a segment of space. Aurelius - my ancestor - doesn't know much either, though he's given me good guidance since I've awoken."
Celsus hummed, sounding almost like his old self again as he said, "I believe that Chronos had an identity before she became Princess, but I was never made aware of who she was back before all of this was built, whenever that was."

Not the Zodiac, and not Chronos. What then. The persistent, but randomly present invisible will that occasionally moved in the universe at large never ceased to both perplex and incense. People would be whisked here or there, a threshold undefined would be met somehow and set off events or wake something up, they would individually be gifted ranks willy nilly, 'visions' of past lives would occur with no known reason what or why. For whatever reason, officers purified into knights, but there seemed to be no overarching reason that the the recruiters should know who was a knight in disguise and who was not. They picked them out from all the city all the same. "Your...ancestor? However do you mean? You speak in the present- 'know' not 'knew.' " Thraen stood again, opening stance to invite the knight to stroll as he explained in the arbitrary direction that they were facing.

Celsus ran a hand absently through his hair, tugging at a red strand. He ignored the trembling of his fingers as he did so and felt, strangely, for the first time in a long time, some of the tension in his shoulders ease a little. In spite of the fact that Thraen carried with him a certain air of intimidation, simply through height and experience, there was something else about him that made Celsus feel slightly more relaxed.
"Oh," he said now, pushing forward to fall into step beside the senshi. "Ah. Aurelius, my ancestor, he lives at my Wonder. At least," Celsus amended, "He does for now, I'm not sure how long he's supposed to be there. He's not really a ghost, more like...a memory? Or something, I'm not entirely sure. He's not really all there; he's not tangible, but he shares with me things about my past and about being Celsus."

"Lives isn't something memories truly do...maybe? Not out of grey matter. Is it not sentient? Self aware? " Is it a construct of memories that there are whole parts missing- edited out or not thought of or decayed in time? That may be too rude of a question. He admits to being unsure already how to quantify the thing to begin with. It would be asking things he likely still doesn't have answers to. "Ancestor in a literal or figurative sense? If it isn't a ghost, it can't be related to you. " For instance, our primer has precious little to offer on Knights, and less one of Court serving a greater crystal. If that entails any difference, which it may not. But senshi, I've been led to believe are all reincarnated from our last existences during the so-called Silver Millennium. Our starseed is the same as that person, though time, situation, and race may differ. Visions or hallucinations come to us, supposedly, of that. I haven't gathered enough data of instances from others on how vibrant, how long, frequent subject matter, really anything about the details from others how the mechanic of the ordeal works. But that sounds separate indeed from your Aurelius. Is it the same for other knights of Chronos? Knights in general?"

"He's sentient," said Celsus, thinking of Aurelius' knowing smirk, his airy personality. 'He knows he's only here to guide me, and he's aware of who he is and who I am. Aurelius was there when I awoke, and it was he who told me to look for my signet ring somewhere in my Wonder."
He glanced down at his hand, where the upgraded ring now lay, expression somewhat rueful. In spite of it being all shiny and fancy, Celsus was not exactly known for his prowess in technology. Too many times of accidentally calling Mont Blonc was proof enough of that.
He dropped his hand. "It must be a ghost, then, because he's the former Knight Celsus. I know some are...what you called it, reincarnations of a sort? Of their past selves, but I'm not. I'm descended from whoever the first Celsus Knight was, or at least that's how I think it goes."
Celsus ran another hand through his hair, feeling his fingers twinge a little. "Some do have ancestors, I've asked around. But not all. A great many of knights, including Chronos ones, are reincarnated like senshi are, while some - all knights, I believe - have ancestors at their wonders to help guide."

"Guidance of knights does not include much lore of history, then? Can he acconut for not knowing about the time in which he lived? Loss from time? Death ? Memory takes damage from corruption and purification. Maybe death and becoming undead is little different. " "Are others able to see and talk to him? " Thraen held up hands preemptively in warding and easing gesture, "Not as a suggestion that you take me to see him. You've made your feelings on your wonder clear. It is a matter of academics only, on whether you've ever taken any others and they were able to see and interact with him. " "The reincarnation...how it works and how far it goes is something I want to learn more of. If you are not but others are...are all starseeds reincarnations? Or just some? And what happens to those not. If all are, then while you may not be a reincarnation of the Silver Millennium knight, you may be of an earlier one. Or some other soul at some other time. Those without ancestors, do they have moments of vision or memory as senshi do, when at their wonder? Are you at leave to list who is which that you know?"

Celsus felt his cheeks heat just a little.
"Er," he said, glancing away from Thraen momentarily, a hand rising to rub at the back of his neck. "Truth be told, I never actually...asked him of those things, though come to think of it, they seem like the most obvious of questions, looking back at it."
He dropped his hand, his chest tightening immediately at the thought of visiting his Wonder, but Thraen had already lifted his hands in a gesture of submission, and some of the ache eased. Celsus took a breath and said, "Yes, others can see him and speak with him. He's talked with one or two others that I have brought."
His fingers slid absently over his signet ring. "It's a confusing process, I'll admit. It seems only some of us are reincarnations, and some are descendants, but then at what point of that does it start and begin?"
Celsus glanced over at the senshi, frowning slightly, though not out of anxiousness, but thought.
"Off the top of my head, it's hard to recall, but if you wanted, I could talk to people I know. I'd like to help you understand things, because I'd like to understand them myself."
There was a pause, and then Celsus said quietly, "When I - when it is possible for me to return to my Wonder in the future...if you would accompany me on a visit, I will take you to speak with Aurelius."

"Take no shame of it. I'm the unusual one, so far as I've gathered in talks with others, in my fixations on understanding small points and mechanics of what goes on around us. Most of it pales in importance compared to survival. The present plight facing all of us- at worst annihilation and best a Pyrrhic victory through attrition to keep life on Earth. Hindsight is perfect, and 'obvious' questions about history less so when faced with an actual ghost. Other questions crowd to the mind on that point, since Ghost Hunters and Haunted History, all of Hollywood, for the lion's share of what we might expect out of an afterlife. " Thraen paused, looking over, then offered an incline of head and flowered branches that made up his circlet. When it is possible for you, I would be honored. To learn what can be from Aurelius, your ancestor. And more from you, in the meanwhile, as long as you feel up to the exchange. " It would be imprudent to recognize the worth of only the ancestor. The man seemed to take issue with himself as it was, with so much discomfort in his own skin. Whatever horrors lay behind, he was a knight full powered. That meant agency and danger both. "Oft just speech and exchange is enough to lead to new viewpoints and ideas. You've experienced much I haven't. " "Would you be willing to meet with me again, sometime, perhaps in the VIP room of the Catfe, to tell be what you learn from talking with the others? It might be less stressful, not in uniform and with tea and cats. Even here on this structure, you are haunted. "

Celsus shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Actually, compared to others I've met, you're relatively normal," he said, with a touch of ruefulness to his tone. "In spite of wherever your interests and curiosities may lay, you seem to have a much more level head on your shoulders than most."
He was thinking of a great number of people even in Order that were not exactly the easiest to converse with. Celsus's eyes flickered back to Thraen, taking in the nod and assent with a strange pressure in his chest. He did not feel obligated to take Thraen to his Wonder, but he had thought it would be beneficial, perhaps to them both.
Maybe it would help. "I think Aurelius would be pleased to speak with someone other than myself, since I see him more often than not," said Celsus, with a slight quirk of his mouth up.
He inclined his own head, eyes fluttering. "Yes, that would...be just fine. I would very much like to visit your establishment again, it seemed...a most enjoyable place, and I admittedly have an absurd fondness for all things involving cats."

Would that Stroud or any person that knows she or me could hear that estimation of any Marinus. Who must this knight be encountering with regularlity that I should seem 'relatively normal'? Even Ms. Gibson called my affect non-existent and that an outlier of my age group. Old Stone Face, if we should all be so lucky to live as long as Buster Keaton. Thraen held out his hand again, pulling phone to hand again for access tothe charm and button. The way home and hopefully unhaunted hours for Celsus. Time to let the detritus of feelings surrounding this Wonder, the Surrounding itself, and Aurelius settle to the bottom of the man's mind again. For a little while. Barely much of an excursion here, but trauma needs care. Small reintroductions and exposures. What could cause such trouble of the very place your soul is tied to? "Let's go back. " " You'll be welcome when ever you want to come to the Catfe. " 'Absurd'? How British.
