Dex could feel the heat running along his face, ducking his head to hide his face a little. Good thing Shadiya hadn't seen that...
Rubbing his toes, he looked across his leg at Nadiya, and ducked his gaze again. "Yeah. I'll be fine. ..Just, surprised was all."
Doubted himself more than he should? Slowly, he looked over to give Nadiya a cautious glance. She didn't really believe that after the spectacle he'd just made of himself, did she? He looked himself over quickly and mentally shook his head. He didn't see it... He was background, not a hero.
As the subject of Nadiya's stories came up again, he let his foot drop and stretched out his leg to wiggle the toes. "Nice to hear I'm good for something outside of chores," he said with a little smirk. His brow rose at her last comment. "So.. you've never been in love yourself? Even with all those stories?"

Nadiya's mouth twisted up into a small smile, "So I see." Patting some sand away from her skirt, Nadiya glanced towards Dexurn. Had she truly startled him so badly? I suppose not all adventurers are so bold and confident in themselves. Still, it was rather charming to see someone being so humble. Even Nadiya probably would have tired of a boasting warrior...eventually.
Watch me go...I'm already making up stories about the adventures I could be having with him. She wanted to laugh at her own antics. How was it that her mind could never seem to stop spinning stories? Really it was going to get her in trouble one of these days. Flushing the girl blinked over towards Dexurn as he spoke, "Hmm?"
"Well you definitely are." Nadiya laughed lightly, "I suppose I could say the same. Hearing my music complimented means I'm better than just chores as well." She really couldn't help teasing him, "So many siblings to make me the perfect home body." At his sudden question about love the girl's flush returned, "Me, in love?" Nadiya shook her head quickly before letting out a small sigh.
"I mean I've always wanted to experience it and I've always heard stories, but not yet...I've not had much time to branch out." She crinkled her nose, "Most of the men that I've encountered are trading partners of my brother and father. That's the last thing I need in my life...I'd much prefer an adventurer, someone who I could travel and enjoy life with. Not that I wouldn't mind living in Matori, but I want to stretch my legs a bit first." Holding up a hand Nadiya made a motion as if to catch her mouth, "Look at me going on and on. Surely I seem like some crazy day dreamer to you. After all you seemed disappointed with adventures...are you glad to be in Matori? Are you..." She paused and for once seemed shy as she glanced back towards him, "Going to be wanting to stay here now?"

After giving his toes a few experimental wiggles, Dex decided nothing had broken and stretched his legs out in front of him. He sure made being foolish look easy...
Definitely? This girl was something interesting. He actually chuckled softly when she turned the chores comment to herself. He was willing to believe that. The mention of siblings caught his attention, his eyes shifting over to the young lady. Siblings? How many was 'so many?'
As Nadiya talked of dreams, Dex looked to his shield again, reaching out to pull it closer and brush the sand off. She wanted the opposite of what her life currently was. Sounded familiar.
"I.. I guess I wouldn't say disappointed..." He looked down at his shield, brow knitting slightly. "I didn't find what I was looking for. That was disappointing. I.. I've found other things here though." Pulling the shield closer, he looked to Nadiya with a little smile. "I decided on this after coming here. I found someone who seems willing to teach me a little. I also met you." He cocked his head slightly, smile growing. "Really.. Matori and adventuring are not so bad."

Making herself comfortable on the sands next to Dexurn, Nadiya just tucked her legs up against her body. "Oh?" So perhaps his adventuring hadn't been so devastating after all! A glimmer of hope sparked her gaze before she turned away. Look at me getting so excited over something so small. She truly was a special one.
"True." Nadiya pursed her lips thoughtfully, "But like you said you found out other things. A lot of adventuring is finding out what you didn't know. Friends, life purposes, treasures, enemies, love..." Flushing she shook her head, "You know the list goes on. But it looks like you must have found something to decide on a shield." She smiled slightly and ended up biting her bottom lip shyly at the last comment, "That's true. I suppose if you think meeting me was a good thing." She teased lightly in an attempt to calm her racing heart. For someone who spoke so much of romance and adventure actually meeting a guy like this was strange! Not in a bad way....just different and new. The thought made her laugh quietly, "Then I'm glad. Does that mean you'll eventually say the same thing about romance too?" She winked at him playfully before leaning back on the sands.
"One day I hope to be able to find myself in an adventure...I think I already know that music is my calling." She admitted sheepishly, "I just need to have the courage to confront my family about it. My parents are hard workers and see it as nothing more than a hobby. It's going to take a lot to change their minds." She sighed before shrugging, "But that's a problem for another day, I spose."

Dex couldn't help chuckling lightly. It was so different, seeing a Matorian with such dreams and hope in her eyes. Most of the other slaves wore smiles, laughed, and spoke of good times, but none had that glimmer to light them up from the inside. Even Shikori, as kind and sweet and loving as she was... he knew her eyes rarely lit up like this. It had been a dead end, hopeless situation, and the further he got from it, the more he could look back and see.. see that life really hadn't been good. ..Would he have had this if he'd grown up here?
He looked up with surprise, shaking off the chill of the past to smile again. "Of course meeting you's a good thing." And, of course, he was quickly blushing again and looking away. "I.. might say that about romance.. sometime... maybe."
Once the subject changed, he looked over to Nadiya again. Family and parents and siblings and actual jobs... "What's it like? Having a family that you like, I mean. Having siblings and parents. That sort of thing."

Nadiya couldn't help laughing at Dexurn's blush. As the noise rang like bells over the waves, the girl turned back to face him with grin. "Really? Then I suppose we'll have to see. If you find it, let me know how it goes?" She was so glad that he didn't think of her as a nuisance. Just the fear was enough to knot her chest. Perhaps it was her family's influence, but Nadiya often worried that her daydreams would be scoffed at by others rather than accepted.
Speaking of her family. At the question the Matori made a face, "I suppose it's a love, hate thing. I love my family dearly, I do....but I hate the ideas that they have for me. I have an older brother who debates often with my father, but they bond over the fact that they're both tradesmen. My mother like I said is a hard worker, even when she was freed from Oba she refused to stop moving." Nadiya smiled in faint amusement as she glanced up towards the skies thoughtfully, "Because of that whenever she could she went straight back to her craft and helping da with the trade. Leaving me alone with my rambunctious four younglings in the family. Talk about having to learn lightening reflexes! The triplets are the worst while my other sister is alright, she's the shy one.Still, trust me you might be better off. Siblings are a life hassle." She couldn't help teasing lightly as she shook her head, "I never have a moment of rest except when I can sneak away to the beaches at night once my parents return from their shop."
She sighed as she shifted on the sands so that she could hug her knees to her chest, "But since I'm becoming the right age, they want me to pick up a craft. Something to help with the family business." Nadiya frowned, "It's just not for me. I hate the idea of being so worried about shop keeping all the time when there's a whole world out here for me to enjoy. You would think having five other children would be enough for them...I suppose since I'm the second child it's to be expected. The other four hopefully will have some lean way with their lives....as long as it's not something 'useless' like music."
Peeking back toward Dex over her knees Nadiya flushed, "And here I go rambling again. Sorry~ I suppose this is one of those situations where I should appreciate what I have considering your past." Her cheeks darkened even more, "And I do...it's just that I would like the freedom to be accepted for who I am instead of being considered the odd ball out." She closed her eyes for a brief moment before glancing back at Dex mischievous look, "If you ever want to experience it one day you are more than welcome to stop by. We have extra room since my brother isn't always home anymore. The triplets could always use another sacrifice - I mean another watchful eye."
Her mouth slanted towards a small frown before she glanced over at him, "But did you truly never experience a family at all?"

Dex ducked his head slightly. If he did find romance, he was supposed to tell people about it? The thought was odd...
"Love and hate?" Brow knitting, he looked out to the water. Nadiya seemed to have quite a large family! He couldn't imagine such a crowd. Well, he could imagine, but he didn't get much from it. "Your family loves you, but wants you to do something you don't want to do..." Not long ago, he might have said that had been his relationship with his master, but now.. now he knew that hadn't been the case. Master had not been family...
Brow rising, he looked at Nadiya curiously. "You're not rambling. It's nice to listen to you. ..And you should appreciate what you have, but not just because I didn't have it. Shouldn't it be enough that you do have it?" Pulling his knees up to his chest in a protective sort of fashion, he crossed his arms to make a shelf to rest his chin on. "I was taken from my parents when I was really little, so I don't remember them. I had Auntie growing up. She was another slave like me. There were lots of us, but she took care of me like I was blood. At least, that how she described it. ..She died a long time ago, though."
He was surprised by how easily he was talking about such things. He would have teared up before, or chosen silence over speaking. Now, the sadness sank in his chest, but he kept his head in one piece.

"Aye." Nadiya nodded towards Dex, "They absolutely loathe the idea of me being anything other than a tradesman or something profitable. No matter how beautiful music can be it's a waste of time for them." She made a face towards the waves. And it wasn't like she could ever change their minds...they were all too stubborn. Shrugging the girl just shook her hands towards the sea as to brush away the subject, "Nothing to mope about I suppose. Eventually something has to give away."
"Oh don't take me wrong, I do appreciate them...just not always." Nadiya's mouth quirked up in a faint smirk, "Part of being close to family is wanting to throttle them a good portion of the time, I suppose." As she listened to Dex's story the girl's expression shifted, "Ah." Her heart clenched for him in her chest. Was this the life her own mother had experienced? No wonder mama wants the best for us...
Shaking her head the girl reached out to touch Dex's shoulder again, "Your auntie must have been an amazing person. I'm sure you'll always have precious memories of her and in that was your family." She smiled faintly, "Not all family is blood, ya know." Her fingers tightened around his shoulder to give a light squeeze before she pulled away once more.
"My time out here is almost up since they'll be missing me soon. Let me play for before I leave~ Okay? It's not often that I get a chance to play for an audience." Not really giving him much of a choice in the matter, Nadiya scooted up from the sands and placed her flute against her lips. Ever so softly another melody fluttered around them on the breeze. While this was held a lighter tune than before, though not a dancing song it was far more peaceful than that.

Dex frowned slightly. He saw both sides of the coin, coming from such a background. "Doing what you love to do is best.. but you also have to be able to support yourself." A little smile rose. "I can tell you appreciate them. ..You care about what they think of you."
The squeeze to his shoulder brought another smile. "Yes. Auntie was my family. Looking back.. I know it's the truth."
Resting his head on his arm, he watched Nadiya a moment before closing his eyes to listen. Someday, he would have someone who would miss him. With his eyes closed, the music playing, and the wind ruffling his hair, he could imagine.. just a tiny bit...
