Dreon was a bit surprised to be approached again, though at the same time he knew he likely shouldn't have been when Galan had shown such strange interest in him. He just wasn't used to people wanting to talk to him for any real length of time. He turned back to look at Galan fully and after a moment, shrugged.
"It's not something I indulge in too much." He said. "But it's something to read when I'm bored." He shrugged again. "Mostly I prefer less....fantastical things, though." He honestly didn't have much patience for that kind of thing, though he didn't mean to disparage anyone who did.

"Oh..." Galan responded lamely. He was disappointed the other took so little interest in one of his passions. For a moment, he stood there in awkward silence, his eyes roving for some new point of contact. At last he found himself looking up into Dreon's implacable eyes and felt himself shrink a little. He mustered his courage, his tail curling tightly around his ankle for comfort.
"Well, then... What do you like?" He thought back to the shelves where he had initially interrupted the Dryad and tilted his head. "If you're not much a fan of mythology, I think the novels you'd pursue would be...something based in the practical?"

"That'd be right." Dreon agreed, looking over at him. He shrugged. "Not that I don't care about fiction, I'd just rather read sci-fi."
He smirked faintly. "I almost ended up having to study it anyway, if I'd taken a History or Anthropology major, but when I found out I'd have to read myths I went into Psychology instead."
He lightly tapped one of the shelves. "Maybe I got sick of it because my parents stuffed my head full of it when I was little. Our myths, fey myths. Whatever they knew or could find on other races. All those stories, and not a one of them true. It was kind of a let down, honestly."

"Oh no, Dreon!" Galan replied passionately. "Myths are true in all the ways they need to be! They are as dreams: they inspire us, embolden us, encourage us! They show us a world that might be. Like your Science Fiction and its worlds of tomorrow, mythology allows us to preserve the lessons of the past in a way that is timeless. Their parables allow us to experience danger and hope and triumph in the safest of spaces." Galan took a breath, flushed slightly green by his passions and offered a bashful smile. "I'm sure your parents only wanted to draw you into your own potential. For in these shadows and possibilities we can find the tools to forge our own future..."
So fired up by his enthusiasm, Galan had ceased to heed the glares of the crotchety shopkeep behind him and instead was leaning towards the taller Dryad, nearly on his tiptoes in trying to stoke some flame within his stoic counterpart. "Where would our society be if not for its myths? How would we have technological breakthroughs or heroes to look up to if not for the hope that we could make our world better?"

Dreon listened to all of Galan's impassioned speech with a dubious expression that grew faintly alarmed when the younger leaned closer to him, making him instinctively lean back to maintain his personal space bubble. He'd brought this on himself, and he knew it. He tried to be objective about this, and accept that people have different passions, but was this kid serious?!
"They're stories." Dreon said. "At best they're grossly exaggerated versions of true events. hilariously blown out of proportion. There is nothing inspiring in them. Certainly nothing emboldening or encouraging. A world that might be? I would sincerely hope not. Very few myths depict a world I would ever want to live in. If my parents wanted to encourage my potential, then trying to tell me those fantastical stories were true was very much the wrong approach."
He sighed heavily and shook his head. "Where would our society be? Exactly where it is. Fantasy doesn't inspire change, it inspires accidents when children too starry-eyed to know better try to recreate the spells and things they've read about. Technology isn't inspired by myths, by fantasy! It's the people who come up with the best science fiction who inspire actual change. No one's going to come up with a new invention from reading a bunch of fantasy stories, mythology or otherwise."Cerl Temius Disclaimer: Dreon's views do not mirror my own. xp

Crestfallen by the vehement response, Galan fell back to rest on his heels. "I believe they're one and the same," he pressed. "Progress requires the imagination to dream bigger. The curiosity to explore. The vision to look beyond what is to what might be. Science fiction sees this through wires and fuel. Myths see this through magic. Both are an equal part of this world. They work together to enable our world to function."
He paused, looking down to his boot-toes, his tail tightly squeezing his ankle again. He took a deep breath, forcing his tail to unclench and it curled up behind him instead. Looking back up with renewed conviction, he offered a warm smile. "Just like you and I. We both are products of that union. We both endeavour to shape our world. Progress without a moral compass is just as disastrous as a foolish attempt at casting magic. Bombs, chemical warfare, strip-mining... Any tool is a weapon in unwise hands. This world needs both of us, Dreon, and our convictions pursued in unison to thrive."

"......That's pretty philosophical." Dreon had to admit before looking nervously toward the shopkeeper. "I'll have to think about that." They'd probably have the conversation again when they met up so Galan could get his portrait. If not this one, then likely something similar. Of course, that depended on what the imp wanted for a portrait, and whether any talking would be involved in the first place.
"Well, I should probably head back to campus. I've dodged homework long enough." He turned to head for the front of the store and thusly the exit. "You, ah....keep doing what you do. I'll give you a ring when I have some free time, and we'll figure something out for that portrait you want to make."

And like that, the exchange was over. Galan blinked, coming back to himself and his surroundings. He glanced over his shoulder to the shopkeep, nearly puffed to apoplexy behind his counter. Galan felt himself flush in embarrassment and turned back to see Dreon heading for the door without any books at all.
He followed his lead and made for the door as well. "I hope I haven't put you off your purchase," Galan piped, a note of apology in his voice. Then Dreon brought the conversation back to the portrait and Galan nodded vigorously. "Yes, please do call." Galan offered his most winning smile as he said it, but in his heart, he fretted that the Dryad was only saying it to be rid of him and escape. He'd said the wrong thing again, hadn't he? He really never did learn... This was why he ought to merely listen when others spoke and stay quiet...
As he pushed through the door and into the afternoon gloaming, he let out a soft sigh and waved to Dreon. "Thank you once again, for your help. I hope the rest of the afternoon goes better for you than being pestered by pesky Juniors!"

Dreon flicked his hand in answer to Galan's question. "I was just browsing anyway." Besides, with the shop keep that irritated, it was wiser to make tracks and come back another time. Dreon still had other books to read, so he wasn't in a rush to get more.
He waved back to Galan at the farewell and then stuck his hands in his pockets, making the mental note to check his schedule to see when he could meet up with the younger to set up a time for that portrait. He wondered if there was a way he could work in an extra credit for his major somehow, but doubted it. Ah well.Cerl Temius And I do believe that's a wrap!
