When her fingertips touched the surface of the mirror it rippled; Remarque had been watching closely, waiting to see if it responded. If a civilian had no potential, the mirror just seemed to sit there, statuesque and ominous.
But when the surface rippled, it meant the mirror wanted them.
"The good kind," he replied, watching as the ripple spread across the glass surface. "The kind that makes you better than you are, and gives you the ability to serve a higher calling. Step through it," he said, gesturing even though he supposed she wouldn't see her. "It won't hurt you. You can see for yourself."

The resulting ripple was less surprising as it should have been, but given everything else she had witnessed that night already, perhaps not. Still, the girl looked properly in awe, especially as slender fingertips sank into the mirror itself, wrapping pale skin in cool glass. step through it.. She looked up at him, a question on her tongue, but said nothing. Instead she steeled herself, shoulders squaring, and did as she'd been bid. It was like was like walking into a wall of cool water, or so she imagined. The oddly liquid glass formed around first her arm, and then the rest of her as she took a breath abs stepped forward, into the mirror itself. The time for doubts had long passed.

Inside the mirror was strangely it was not an unpleasant feeling, but it was a vast, powerful one. It felt like being surrounded in a cloud of smoke that tickled your skin, but there wasn't a wisp in sight. It felt like being embraced by cool water, but there was no weight to slow her down. Everything around her was dark, but it didn't seem shadowy. Just like walking on a glistening black floor in an endless black room.
The mirror had accepted her; it wanted her. It was drawn to something bright and glistening, inside of her.
Remarque could only hold his breath from the other side; he had never seen the mirror open itself to anyone that it didn't intend to awaken as a Dark Mirror Senshi, but these days he always seemed to expect the worst.
He stared into the mirror, oblivious of his own reflection; instead, he looked into it as deeply as possible, as if he could see through its barriers—see straight through to her.
But he couldn’t.
All he could do was cross his arms and lean back on his heels just a bit as he waited for her to step back out.
If she stepped back out.

It was like being submerged, or frozen, or weightless, and yet none of those could really cover the feeling accurately. Nothing could, because there had never been anything she had experienced, or even heard of that could quite touch the press of weighted power that was surrounding her in the darkness. Or rather, not surrounded, but filled. It didn't stop at her clothing, or her skin, but seeped inside, spreading, searching, until it could find the glittering gem at her core and claim it for itself. Coating it, protecting it.Not that Cassie knew any of that. For her it was all sensation and feeling. There just weren't any words, but that was fine. Remarque would have answers, she imagined. Or rather she would have, had she the capacity to wonder beyond the narrow scope of what she was feeling in that moment. The prince wouldn't have to wait that long, or at least it didn't feel that long for her. One moment she had stepped inside, and the next the mirror was giving her back to him. Not Cassiopeia Lyons, but something new, something different. Torn clothing was replaced by pristine darkness and a wispy overlay.

Remarque's gaze lifted when she stepped out, and a crooked smile slipped onto his face. He nodded approvingly.
"You're looking pretty good," he declared. "I thought there was something special about you."
He wouldn't tell her how many civilians he'd brought in here only to be met with disappointment. But this? This filled him with pride. Their numbers were small enough as it were, and anyone was a welcome edition.
He assumed she had questions—they all did. Some questions he could predict, and some were unexpected; already this one seemed to be taking her introduction pretty well, so he figured he'd better give her the real introduction.
"Welcome to the Dark Mirror Court."

She was looking down at herself as he spoke, and the crooked smile returned as she lifted her head, fingers catching at the edges of her skirt to flare it out from her thighs. "Blacks not usually my color, but..." She suspected this would all sink in a little deeper later, the magnitude of what had just happened to her. Not just the change that came from stepping out of the mirror, but the events leading up to it. Or maybe it wouldn't. Cassie had always had a knack for taking things in stride. She did have questions, though, but not she simply couldn't help another little joke. Smile lingering, she waved her hand around the room before gesturing back towards the mirror she'd just emerged from. "Mirrors, I gotcha. It's a theme." Okay, so no as much of a joke as an obvious observation. "The Dark Mirror Court, huh?" Another look down at herself, at the overlay, at the metal that circled her wrists. The outfit probably wasn't something she'd have picked for herself, but it wasn't bad. Glancing towards Remarque, it was hard now not to notice the obvious similarities. Not in color, though the black was probably a running theme, but the additions they both shared. "What's that mean, exactly?"

Remarque wore the same casual, pleased grin, both as she examined her uniform and as she asked her questions. "The Dark Mirror Court's a group of superpowered beings, like myself—and you—who fight to keep world order. Sort of. There's a couple different people with a little too much power, here in Destiny City. Senshi, Knights, Negaverse." He shrugged. "Different groups, all with their own agenda. Our agenda is to work with the Senshi, convince them to join us, and work at getting into space. What they don't tell you about on the news is how dangerous these people can be."
He crossed his arms over his chest and seemed a bit more serious. "In a few years, the Negaverse could overrun this whole city—this whole world and twist it to their own needs. Or the Senshi, or Knights? Might mess up this planet in their own way. There's no telling what the future holds—except that one way or the other, we're going to be in it. Our goal right now is to try and get into space—and yes, it is possible, without rocket ships—and we'll work on the rest from there. I've got a few things to give you. I'll need to grab a compact and a shard. Compacts have a dual purpose as a communicator, shards will help you summon a Mirrorwraith. Which we use to drain energy. Doesn't hurt anyone, in case you're the sort who worries about things like that. Makes 'em sleepy, gives us the power we need. It's not our job to protect this world, but we do. Or, at least."
He sighed. "We do what we can and try to prepare for the future."

Bright eyes widened at the news that she was now in the same sort of league of powered individuals as the man standing before her. It was hard to believe, from a few different standpoints. As much as she felt stronger, she still didn't think she was anywhere close to his level, not if the aura he was throwing off was any sort of indication, but clearly he'd been at this a long time. She pushed her own thoughts aside to listen to him as he explained about the different groups that seemed to all call Destiny City their home, and the apparent power struggle that came as a result of it. Their group--the Dark Mirror Court--didn't seem to have much of a stake in the battle, other than looking for a way into space, and keeping to themselves. That all seemed well and good, though easier said than done, given the nature of war to draw in unwilling participants. Cassie, or rather- "Oh!" She didn't mean to cut him off, but she'd just remembered something. "The mirror, I think it was the mirror, it kind of spoke to me. Or through me?" She wasn't sure exactly, which made it hard to explain. "It said I was...Romulus? of Craters?" It came out a little unsure, as if seeking some sign from him that this was all natural, and she hadn't been hearing things. And she had heard about compacts and shards, and would get back to that, but, well...more important questions.

When the woman in front of him exclaimed, Remarque paused to make way for her enthusiasm. He nodded when she spoke about the Mirror. He had only heard about the experience from within the Mirror from those who had been awakened within it, but what she reported seemed to be fairly common.
"Romulus?" he repeated, familiarizing himself with the name. "That's who you are, then. Your Senshi name. And you've inherited the power of craters. Romulus is your identity while you're like this, while you're powered. For example," he placed his hand over his chest. "I am Remarque, Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry. And when I'm not all dressed up, my name is Jett. You'll be able to switch between the two, as need be. Think of it as a superhero costume, and the powers that go with it."

There was enough building energy in that petite body that she could have been bouncing on the balls of her feet, but she was reigning it in, best she could. Fingers knit to keep them still, she smiled up at the other senshi. "Romulous," she repeated, grin growing to an almost wicked degree. "I like it." So, from the way he was explaining it, it sounded as though she was some sort of superior being, with a secret identity. Kind of like a super hero, but not quite. Nodding, drew her hands apart and lay them on her hips, weight shifting from one foot to the other. "So these powers. I'm assuming they're different for all of us?"

"You're fast," Remarque replied, grin splitting his face. "Good, that'll get you far. Each Senshi holds a different power. In your case, Craters." He gestured to himself, "In mine, Puppetry. Your power is unique to you, but you won't know what it does until you have an opportunity to use it. Perhaps we'll spar some time, if you like. Try things out, see how it goes? I should have practiced my magic more," he confessed, "But I suppose I've always preferred to fight with my fists. I used to box more often, but," his voice trailed off and he shrugged.
"I'm a bit out of the competitive boxing scene now. Do you fight?"

The compliment had Romulus rising up to rock on the toes of her boots, pleased at the praise. If he was her superior, for lack of a better word, it was probably a good idea to stay on his good side, and to be impressive. She could do that, she was clever, picked things up quickly. "I'm interested to see what sort of power will come from craters," she admitted, grinning up at him before giving a small shake of hr head at his question. "Not boxing, no. I mean I know my way around a brawl, but I've never had any formal training. Always preferred things like surfing or volleyball." Honestly, She and her brother were a lot more experienced in running from fights, than participating in them. Not in the cowardly sort of way, but in the don't get caught way.

"Formal training is overrated. They teach just about the same things to everyone who takes lessons. Find your own style. Makes you less predictable. We'll have to meet up some time, though. And focus just on that. Playing with magic, fighting. Even if you know what to expect in the ring—or in a brawl—things out here are different."
He didn't seem afraid of it though, and he wasn't trying to deter her. It was just a fact, and something he wanted her to be aware of. He wasn't going to tip-toe around it or feed her false information: things could get dangerous out here. Better she learn it from a friend than someone who was trying to hurt her.
"They play by their own rules, and once they start throwing magic in the picture? You never know what you're going to get. But I'll do my best to see that you're ready for it all."

Romulus grinned up at him as he mentioned finding her own style, then spoke of meeting up again later for a bit of one on one training. That'd be handy, she assumed. Safest way she'd get to face off against someone so strong. Obviously it'd be a bad idea to go stepping with someone of his rank, on another team. Nope. "I'd like that, but only when you aren't busy." Running a court, that had to take up a lot of free time. Once again she acknowledged to herself how lucky she'd been that he'd found her before that thing, that youma, could do any serious damage. The scratches and bruises would heal. "Is there anything else I need to know?"

Remarque shrugged and admitted, "Probably a lot, but I don't want to overwhelm you. All of this can be a lot to take in, and it's easier in small doses. But before I send you on your way so you can digest all of this," he paused for a moment and turned away; when he faced her again he had a small, metallic compact and a smaller, glistening shard.
"The Compact," he explained as he held it out for her, "Will let you communicate with another member of our Court. It's not the greatest tool, you're better off with a cell number--which I'll give you, in case you think of any questions or anything." He then presented the shard and added, "For the wraiths. I can give you a more in depth example on how to use those. We can do that and have a little spar, after you're a little less battered?"
