"Anything can be a magical skill if you leave yourself open to the idea," James replied with a shrug. "I like writing but it's a hobby, I do it for fun." Not to mention he'd hit a massive writer's block. He hadn't written anything personal since -
Space.
That was weird to think about. "English, I'm finishing my master's program in the Summer." All of his free time that wasn't taken up by something else, was spent working on his final thesis.
"I'm a little behind but I had to take - " Was a semester off the correct term? He'd been missing for a while and hadn't gone straight back. "I took some time off, not quite a gap year but, y'know."

Most of Caspian's writing skills lay in his ability to use full sentences and actual punctuation in text messages, and that was about it. Everything else was too much, at least for someone who's attention span only lasted a few seconds half of the time.
"Oh, cool, so you're just Mr. Writer all the way," he said with a grin and a laugh. "That's nice. I wish I could take a year off, but I think my mom would have a heart attack. She's all about us doing our own s**t - me and my sister, I mean, we're twins," he added, for James' benefit. " - but she also wants to make sure we're actually learning s**t and all."
He tapped a finger against his chin thoughtfully.
"Not sure I'd ever do English as a subject, but science is pretty cool."

"In layman's terms I suppose," James replied, casting a glance to the blue skies above them. The sun felt good on his skin despite the chillier weather. "It wasn't - " he grit his teeth. He wasn't about to explain why he took a semester and a half off. "It wasn't exactly voluntary. Frankly I'd rather be done with school."
It felt like he'd been working towards his master's for far too long.
"I plan on teaching," he admitted before letting Caspian continue. "School gets you started, it's a good way to figure out what you do and don't like spending a lifetime learning." It'd never been a question for James what he was going to do when he graduate high school, but he knew that wasn't the case for most people.
"Science is cool, goes over my head most of the time."

From the slightly tense way in which James spoke of his semester off, Caspian did not feel that asking why would have been a particularly nice thing to do. Not that he was always such a considerate person, but even he knew that being nosy had its limits.
"I don't like to spend a lifetime learning about words," said Caspian with a laugh. "I mean, no offense, but I've just never been that great at it. I always got low marks on papers and s**t when I was in high school, and my teachers used to tell me that my ideas weren't creative enough."
He made a face, and then grinned. "Maybe now that I've moved to a different place I'll be able to come up with better ideas for stories, though mostly the classes I'm taking are just the generic ones. You know," Caspian added, as he scuffed the toe of his shoe into the ground. "All the basic as s**t classes that you're forced to take before you can do the fun ones."

"To each their own," James shrugged, grateful that Caspian hadn't pushed the subject of his gap year. He didn't like talking about it, not when his memories were jumbled like they were.
"Some people write, some people paint, and some find other ways to express themselves. There's a medium for everyone, it's just a matter of finding it," he replied offering a weak smile the younger man's way. "Experiences are a great thing to use when trying to write any sort of story. Of course, it depends on what you want to write about."
He used to write about his experiences and then - everything got messed with, deleted or turned into numeric sequences that didn't make a lick of sense. It was all very confusing.
"Uh - " he blinked realizing that he'd zoned out a little on Caspian. "Some times you just gotta keep moving forward."

Caspian absently kicked at his board, laughing a little. "You got that right," he said cheerfully. "My medium is basically just doing whatever I can to have a good life, 'cause it's way too damn short to be anything but fun. I don't get people who don't want to have fun."
He didn't mind the zoning out, and gave a half little shrug, grinning up at the other.
"Moving forward is all you gotta do, right?" said Caspian airily. "I mean, that's what we all want to do, right? Just keep on truckin' 'cause that's just how it goes."
He glanced at his watch and said, "You seem pretty chill, but it's gettin' kinda late and I should head back before my sister throws a fit about me not being there for dinner or some s**t. But, seriously,"
Caspian stuck out his hand, smile wide.
"You seem a good guy, James not-Potter."

James' expression was unreadable as he looked at Caspian though there was a sliver of envy that could've been picked out if the boy looked hard enough. He'd thought of the world as something wonderful, meant to be explore and yet -
Too much had happened and all his ideals tarnished by experience and the harsh realities. James hoped that didn't happen to Caspian.
"Yeah, yeah. It's been nice," he replied, accepting the offered hand loosely. It was a quick shake, with the older man pulling his hand back quickly. Handshakes were weird, he kept thinking of the knight's he'd run into and he certainly didn't want to think about that. "I'll see you around." He waved half-heartedly before turning away and separating from Caspian.
