↷↷Class Choice

Word Count - 1007
xxxxxx- Standing there she could only stare at the teacher her mother had found. Masika couldn’t believe that the woman was trying to teach her how to use a blade! Trying being the key word. And thankfully they had started out with a wooden sword otherwise the bruises she had suffered already could have been much worse.

“This.. Isn’t working.” Masika cringed a little as she spoke. She’d wanted to try and be strong for her mother but the movement of the sword in her hand caused it to rub against her palms. In fact the girl was sure she was going to have blisters. “I’m just not a fighter.” Now she frowned.

It broke her heart to think that she would let her mother down so spectacularly. Masika didn’t want to be a failure to her parents. “I’m sorry, I know my muma wanted a fighter.” There was still hope though, Galene hadn’t picked her path yet. And since her twin was more of the rough and tumble type maybe she could handle the sword better.

“No, Masika, it’s not your fault. You are just too gentle.” Her teacher told her. Though there was nothing condescending about it. In fact she seemed to be pleased with this knowledge. “There is nothing wrong with that.” The woman cooed at her.

Masika rolled her eyes. “Please don’t.” Though it was too late. The woman had come closer and put an arm around her in a light hug. “Oh!” She exclaimed.

Once she was released Masika shook her head at her teacher As she moved away from the woman she patted her thigh and called Maha to her. The blue radaku got to his feet and stretched out before lopping after her lazily. Instantly she put her fingers into his fur and walked along the shore. “Muma must be disappointed, huh boy?” As she spoke the hybrid glanced over her shoulder to see the woman picking up the practice swords and taking them into the house, likely to report to her mother that Masika couldn't use a sword.

Turning back around she took a deep breath and continued to walk along the sandy path. “If only I had a fighter’s heart.” Masika figured she had more of her father in her than she did her mother. But, the blue girl couldn’t heal anything or anyone. Not even if her life depended on it. Which it some day could. A lot of use I’ll be then, she thought.

Maha snorted then leaned his weight into her leg as they walked. She glanced down at him then smiled. “I know.” It was something that her mother’s familiar did when he wanted attention. Actually, all of them did it. Masika was almost convinced that Dem had taught them to do it. So she started to scratch around his horns lovingly with both hands. “You silly beast!”

As they reached a small cropping of trees she sat down. Staring out at the sea she waited for the sun to sink. Sunset was one of her favorite times. The colors in the sky and the way the water glittered. It was magical. To her anyways. Then after a few minutes Maha got bored and started nosing around in the rocks. Masika looked at him and was about to shake her head when she noticed one of the rocks had something on it. A carving or something.

She had to shoo Maha away from it so that she could pick up but once she did she turned it over to inspect it. There was a rune on it. Masika blinked and then looked back at the ground to see if there were others and sure enough there was. After collecting them all she toyed with them a little. Who would leave these laying around? Though she thought it would be neat if she could use them. It would be the best of both worlds. A magic user like her father and a fighter like her mother.

Wearing a smile she looked at Maha then held her hand out palm up toward him. The girl thought about what it would feel like to have magic at the tips of her fingers.

Then suddenly the rocks glowed and lifted from her hand. Masika went wide eyed as she stared at them. Was that supposed to happen? Maybe it was just how the rocks were? To check she focused on doing some type of water magic. As a hybrid she had the most experience with water.

Splash!

A jet of water shot out and struck Maha. The poor radaku snorted and sneezed as he shook his fur then gave her an annoyed look.

Masika squealed in delight! “I did it! I found it!” Snatching the rocks from the air she took off toward home. “Muma!!” Shouting the whole way there. She couldn’t wait to show her mother what she could do! She could be a fighter after all! “Teacher!”

It was the woman that emerged from the house with her weapons drawn but when she saw her student running toward her with a grin she lowered them and tilted her head.

“No, you don’t need those.” Masika laughed as she shook her head. “Look! I found it!” She held her hand out once again just as she had before. The runes reacted as they had before and when she thought about the water another jet of water spewed out. Maha was the unfortunate target once again. The blue radaku growled this time as he shook dry and pouted.

The baffled woman stared at her but Masika was jumping up and down. “I can do it! I can be a fighter! I can use magic to fight!” Another squeal and she jumped at her teacher so that she could wrap her arms around the tall woman’s neck. Since Masika was much shorter than her she dangled there and laughed. “I’ll become a mystic!” There it was! Her path! It would please both her parents. Mostly it pleased her! She could do this!

↷↷Growth

Word Count - 1049
xxxxxx- The long trip from Matori to the upper coast that would take her to Chibale was over and now that she stood there, so close to seeing the home that her mother grew up in, she was nervous. Would other Alkidike's accept her? She was half alk but she had chosen to follow an earthling path because she had magic like her father. Not to mention she was a horrible fighter. Masika hadn't learned how to properly hold a sword let alone how to swing it. She was no good with a bow and arrow either. In fact she cringed as she thought about how that went.

Her mother's janarim had taken a glancing arrow to his hide and he had not been at all happy about it. Whenever Masika got close to a bow he moved away to stand behind a tree. So that was a large hint there that she shouldn't even try to shoot one again. Or at least not at anything she wanted to hit. Her aim was horrible.

The hybrid girl wasn't good with a spear either. The top always seemed too heavy and when she held it closer to the tip she lost control of the weapon. Or dragged it in the sand behind her. So Masika had decided to steer clear of any actual close quarter combat path. She had found that she could control magic with the help of some rune stones though! Reaching into her pocket she dug them out and smiled. They were a beat up old set with so many scratches on the surface that the runes were barely visible but she liked them. They brought her comfort. Even as she rubbed her thumbs over them she knew that they were hers. Something familiar to ground her to where she was and give her confidence.

She needed that right now. Her mother had gone to secure them a boat so that they could cross the water over to the Chibale islands. Of course she and her aunt Keket were the only ones allowed to go with her mother. Valharii had to stay. Which was something that no one in the family was very happy about. She was just a youngling. But they had all come to an agreement that the familiars would stay with her and keep her safe. Only Maha would cross the waters with them.

Masika turned her head to look back at the young girl who was basically her sister. She was sleeping curled up with Tanou and Sindi, both her mother's familiars, and she had Ascale and Edaj on watch. No one would bother her since she had two Janarim guarding her, right? The blue feelers on top of her head gave a twitch of concern as she worried her bottom lip. If she kept it up then Masika was going to grind the skin right off it. Her thumb went over the surface of a more smooth rune in her hand as she took a deep breath. She just needed to relax. Nothing would happen. The beasts would look after Valharii and her mother would protect her and Keket. All would be well...

So why did she have a heavy feeling in the pit of her stomach? All Masika could think about was the fact that most Alks were strong fighters and not many liked hybrids. They hated earthlings. At least that is what she had heard about them from rumors and things. Her mother was just one of the nicer ones. An odd ball among the others. Which made her wonder if she should have even asked to come to Chibale. Perhaps she should have stayed in Matori with her father and twin sister. She would never be one of the Alkidikes. There were too many differences. She didn't wear her hair the way they did, which she understood was something they were proud of. She wasn't a fighter. In fact she used magic. Hadn't she heard that magic users were seen as weak? At least physically. And she was that.

Masika was such a soft person that she wasn't sure what she had been thinking when she had asked to see the Amazon homeland. Then a hand landed on her shoulder and she practically jumped out of her own skin as she yelled out. When her head turned she noticed that it was only her aunt and offered an embarrassed smile. "Sorry, Keket."

Her dark colored aunt laughed and shook her head at her before speaking. "It's alright. I noticed you were fidgeting with your stones. Is everything alright Masi?" Leave it to Keket to notice the little things.

Slowly she shook her head. "No. I'm nervous. I don't fit into Muma's world. I'm worried what the other Alks will say. What if Muma gets kicked off the island?" Masika looked down at her own feet.

Keket took her hand away from Masika's shoulder and shook her own head in response. "Don't think that way, alright? My sister is strong and she'd never let anything happen to us. You know this." She gave her niece a compassionate look. "Besides, I'll be right there with you. You can do this Masika."

The comforting words from her aunt made her nod her head. Of course she knew that her mother was strong. She just wasn't sure how strong she was. Could she handle it if anything went bad during their visit? Would she be strong enough not to cry like a child? Lifting her eyes to look out across the waters she took several deep breaths. After a while she gave a determined look and put her rune stones back into her pocket. She could do this. Masika had the right to see Aisha. After all she had been born from one of her blooms! She didn't want to stay just visit. Her home was in Matori. When she noticed her mother's friend waving at them both to join her she straightened her shoulders and took in yet another breath, this one to steel her nerves against any worry. After giving a look to Keket she grabbed her aunt's hand and started walking toward her mother and the boat that would take her across the ocean to the islands of her own birth.

(( Masika overcomes her initial nervousness and worry about crossing the waters to visit Chibale. She is determined to visit Aisha since she was born from her flowers. ))

↷↷Getting thought to paper

Word Count - 477
xxxxxx- Masika sat at her desk, wearing a plain top and pair of pants rather than her elegant dress, and tapped her fingers along the top. Currently she was trying to come up with a design that would be worthy of a noble lady. Of course she had other designs already sketched out and even more that had been sewn into a full sized dress. There was nothing wrong with those as they were very pretty but she felt like she was missing something. That wow factor that would snag her a big client in just minutes.

Unfortunately nothing was coming to mind. Masika was drawing a huge blank. It was frustrating to have her creativity blocked in such a way. She was thinking too much about things that couldn't provide her with coin for a living. She wanted to be able to push those thoughts aside and think only about work but it nagged at her. With a huff she leaned back in her chair and let her head tilt back so that she was looking at the ceiling. Since she had the apartment on the top floor she got to see the rafters of the building as well as the thatching for the roof. Luckily there was little to no rain that happened since she wasn't so sure it would hold against a heavy rainfall. Then all of her things would be ruined.

The thought of moving had occurred to her but she couldn't afford to do that until she had more clients and a steady flow of work. Another reason for her to try and force her mind to focus on what really needed done. Masika gave a frustrated noise and sat back up so that she could stare at the blank page in front of her. Holding her charcoal in one hand she attempted to make the first line of the design. Maybe if she had something on the paper the rest would come naturally?

Only problem was when she went to mark the paper she found herself hesitating. What would she start with? The basic body or maybe the skirts or perhaps the bodice? So many things to consider when designing something elegant. It overwhelmed her and she sighed. Dropping the charcoal onto the desk she stood up and moved away from her work space. Masika placed her hands on her hips and moved around her small apartment letting her eyes take in the other designs she already had. Could she make something better? Work off a single detail she had in one of them? Her mind couldn't find that one thing to work with. No beading or embroidery that she thought might be usable elsewhere. Not even a simple a-line skirt that might go best with another top. It seemed like she was doomed to not have any good ideas today.

↷↷Things that happen

Word Count -
xxxxxx- Events folded out a lot more frequently when she was busy. Masika had been swamped with requests for new dresses, mostly for girls who were no longer children and needed clothing to reflect that. On top of that she was still caring for her brother's Keldari. Cute little thing that it was. Not that it ever gave her any issues. Mostly it liked to stay warm in the sunny spot by the window and when they went out it stayed in the pack on her Janarim. Edaj seemed comfortable enough with the little creature so Masika never bothered trying to move it.

Now the world was going chaotic again. Only this time it looked like an enemy of her mother's people was back and trying to do something. The Dretch is what they were called. Bug mages. Ugly beings. And that was saying something coming from Masika since she usually thought everyone had their good points. Still, there was something about them that held nothing but nasty. They were ugly on the outside and in. There was no amount of good clothing that could fix it either.

At first Masika thought it was something minor that the Alkidikes could handle on their own since it did seem to be an enemy of theirs. The idea of trying to help did cross her mind but even she knew she was no warrior. At most she had defensive magic. (If only for the sole reason that she wasn't confident enough to use her magic roughly.) She had learned a healing spell or two from her father but even that wasn't much when it came to deadly wounds. So the idea that she would be of any use was quickly shut down. Not that the issue at hand didn't still bother her. Her sister was a fighter, her younger sister was a healer, her brother had weapons but she wasn't so sure he had the fighter mentality, and her mother was a warrior. So basically all of her family would be doing something.

As those around her and even around Oba were gathering she hurried to make it there as well. Masika was curious to know what it was the territory leaders had figured out and what they could tell the people.
