Vincent didn't think that he had crossed any sort of line in beating his son. He had done much worse to those that offended him, after all. He had no shame about his behavior at all, not even when suddenly Funayurei was there, yelling at him and dashing towards him with more energy than he had ever known her to possess. It was the sudden ferocity in her eyes that caused him to back away from Jetsam.
"Stay out of this, mare!" he shouted. "The boy and I have an agreement. Don't get in the way!"

Jetsam spat out blood from where the edges of his teeth had cut into his lip. He was even more surprised to see his mother behaving in such a way than Vincent was. Had he ever seen her so furious? He didn't think so.
"Mom!" he coughed as he attempted to heave himself to his feet. "Stay away from that b*****d!" He was still determined to protect her. He'd rather let his father break all his legs than let him touch a hair on his mom's body. He finally managed to stand but winced as he did so. Vincent had landed several good hits before he'd been interrupted.

"No, no, NO!" yowled Funayurei, and she wasn't even sure who she was addressing. The time was past when she'd let herself be bullied by Vincent, and the time was past when she needed protection by her son.
"You need to leave, NOW!" She slowed but didn't stop, still advancing on Vincent with fire in her eyes.

Vincent sneered incredulously. She was ordering him around! He couldn't think of anything more absurd. He didn't even know what to say. Funayurei had always been a bit of a doormat. That's why he'd come around this time. He knew he could get what he want from her as long as Jetsam didn't interfere. Now she stood up to him with something actually like a backbone. It was different. It was even somewhat attractive.
"How about we talk about this?" He took on a more conciliatory tone now. He stepped away from Jetsam, giving the boy plenty of room. He could still salvage this somehow. He had a lot of faith in his ability to get out of scrapes. "It's all a big misunderstanding," he added unconvincingly.

"Don't trust him, Ma." Jetsam glared daggers at his father. He couldn't believe she showed up with such ferocity either. He couldn't even remember a time seeing her so angry. He hoped he'd never have that fire directed at him, but he figured there wasn't much chance of that.
"I'm ok, Ma." He wondered, was she actually going to attack his father? The way she was walking at him and glaring like that almost looked like it. He shook some of the weakness out of his legs. If anything happened, he'd be ready. Unless he was hugely mistaken, his mom didn't know how to fight. It'd fall back to him if something went down.

"There's NOTHING to talk about!" She refused to lower her voice and refused to look away. For so long it felt like she'd been under the hoof of this b*****d. She'd let herself be dragged down by him even years after she'd seen him. She thought now about how pathetic she was. She was complicit in her own victimization, or so it seemed.
"I want you to LEAVE." Her ears flattened back and her teeth bared. "Leave and don't come back." Her voice was shaking now. She wanted to keep being brave but didn't know how much more bravery she had in her. Her legs felt weak. She just knew that Vincent would be able to see straight through her. She felt fake, her bravery only a front.

She was serious. Vincent looked between her and the kid. He felt like he was going crazy. She was yelling at him and he was actually not sure how to respond? He opened his mouth and then shut it again. He thought about slapping her across her face with his tail... but that didn't happen either.
"Come on," he cajoled. He tried to remember her as he had last seen her, a spooked and spooky little mare. What could have changed her so much in such a short time? Even as he said the words, part of him knew he had lost. He could have fought Jetsam and won again but he wouldn't ever get what he wanted out of Funa. Not anymore.
"Pfft, have it your way." He abruptly turned, starting to stalk back in the direction he had come from. "There are plenty of fish in the sea."

If he was surprised before, Jetsam was stunned now. There his father went! He turned and was gone, like everything had been a bad dream.
He didn't have any delusions of grandeur. He was in a lot of pain but knew it could have been much worse. He couldn't understand why his father had left, but then he looked back to Funayurei. She had been the one to scare him off. Jetsam knew in that moment that nothing he could have done would have made his father turn tail like that. He wasn't the reason why Vincent had come, after all.
"I don't think he's coming back," he murmured. It almost felt irrelevant to say that now. Of course Vincent wasn't coming back. He didn't have anything to come back for. Jetsam might have felt sorry for him if he didn't loathe the old b*****d so much.

As soon as her son spoke something changed within Funayurei. The fire left her. She looked at Jetsam and bit back a sob. He was so hurt, and all because of her!
"A-are you all right? I'm so sorry." She hurried to his side and nuzzled him desperately. She loved him so much. She didn't think she ever would have had the strength to stand up to Vincent if it hadn't been for him. She thought of how Vincent had been beating him and almost broke down right then and there. If he had killed Jetsam she never would have forgiven herself. Even as it was now she felt guilt stab her heart.
"He's never coming back. Never!" She said it partially to comfort herself, partially for him. "But we need to get you to a unicorn." There was one nearby that had some healing skills. She would definitely help at a time like this.
"Come now," she murmured to Jetsam, leading him away. "Everything is going to be fine."
