"Why are you doing this?" she asked, as though the creature was going to grant her with an answer.
It didn't, of course, just another slash to her face. Things weren't looking good.

Finally Scout desummoned her rifle and resummon it in her hands at a better angle. With a satisfying click the trigger pulled and a shot was fired directly into the creature's stomach, flinging it backwards.
She was pretty beat up, but the fight wasn't over. Scout didn't consider herself a murderer, but she definitely wasn't a pacifist. If a job needed to get done, it would get done.

With the creature a distance away from her and her rifle still hot, she fired a few more shots. She did have a cringe of sympathy as the scaled beast twitched on the ground, but she forced those feelings away.
She wouldn't let the creature win that easily. "Why did you do it!" she repeated again. Still no response.

She thought it merciful to give the creature a moment to breathe, to recover and potentially answer her question. Scout wasn't naturally angry or brutal. If this was going to be a fight, it would be a fair one.

Instead of talk, the creature lunged at her once more. Scout met it with her own firepower.

Your instructions are to contain if possible. Specimens are more valuable alive than they are dead. Information is vital.
Scout remembered the words only as she took a final shot and the creature stopped moving. Her eyes widened- did she .... was it dead? Her orders had been specific, and she'd failed. Worse yet was the question- had she done that by choice?
She fell to the ground for a moment, shocked and appalled. Her mind was telling her all the things she should have been doing- moving the corpse to a less visible location, pendanting out, something, but instead she just sat there.
