"To what have you sworn yourself to?" The lieutenant asked, skeptical.
As far as he knew, there wasn't a figure head leading the knights or the senshi the way Metallia ran the negaverse. He had a hard time believing that people just put themselves out there for the "greater good" like Babylon claimed he did.
"Darkness comes in many forms," he mumbled, thinking of how the history of Earth was heavy with dark times, war, and destruction. He couldn't help but chuckle at Babylon's assumption of what they were doing. 'That's not the end goal," he countered even if he didn't know what the goal was. He'd always figured it was something along the lines of protect the earth but he also figured it was sensitive information that was only disclosed to those who'd earned it.
"You know what, why not," he replied in response to the question. He figured humoring the knight wouldn't hurt him.

"I'm sworn to my Wonder," replied Babylon, although he knew that would likely do little to quell the lieutenant's skepticism. At face value, it was a selfish thing to swear yourself to, or at the very least a foolish thing. Sworn to ego, or else a rock out in space that owed him nothing. But for Babylon, being sworn to his Wonder meant being sworn to himself and his truest power, to respect the ordeals his lineage had survived so that he could return to their ancestral homeworld. He just didn't think he could explain that nearly so eloquently as he could think it, and it would probably be pointless to try. He'd just ruin the moment. Besides, he had a job to do. Babylon opened the compass case and flashed the dial at Aluminite, showing him the ring of planetary sigils inscribed on the face. "I point the arrow on the outer band at you," he explained, holding the compass out between them, "and then it tells us what we want to know." As soon as Babylon had rotated it into position, the dial began to spin of its own accord, symbols blurring together. And then it began to slow, moving in tighter and tighter arcs, swinging back and forth until it finally settled, the indicator pointing squarely at a sunburst shape. "Chronos," said Babylon, looking up at the lieutenant. He thought he could kind of see it, if he squinted.

The lieutenant seemed to hum and accept the answer for what it was, not pushing the subject any further, even if it was obvious that he didn't quite buy it. The magical proprieties of the war were definitely over his head and someday, the man wondered how he'd let himself get roped in. But, he was now a soldier and he had his own part to play, so he'd play.
He watched fixedly as Babylon pulled out the compass and pointed it at him. He squinted, green eyes trying to get a better look at all of the different symbols. He recognized Mercury, if only because it decorated the uniform of the knight before him and he vaguely recognized a few others but couldn't place the names.
He frowned, brow crinkling and fingers fidgeting against his thigh.
"Chronos," he repeated slowly, as if he was tasting each syllable in his mouth. The name struck a chord within him and his body stilled, went rigid. Aluminite swore that if it weren't for his ribcage, his heart would have beaten so furiously it'd escape his chest. "Like, from the Surrounding?"
He had vague, hazy memories of his time in space at best, but he knew it was important. He just couldn't place why

Babylon nodded. "Yeah," he said. "That Chronos." As if there were any other. It was puzzling to him that Aluminite knew the name of the Surrounding. Either the Negaverse was really getting in-depth in schooling their lieutenants in a way he'd never encountered before... which seemed weird given the entire conversation they'd just had... or... "There was a battle there," he said. "Years and years ago. Between Order and Chaos. I was there. Were you?"

The lieutenant swallowed dryly, tongue feeling think in his mouth, before he answered and the word came out strangled. "Y-yeah." He hadn't talked about what happened when he went missing in years, not since he'd run into that knight...one that apparently 'shared' his knighthood.
Suddenly, Aluminite felt queasy, like the ground beneath him had given out and the world started spin rapidly around him.
"I was there I -- I died," the admission came out as a croak, a tremble taking over his entire frame. He didn't remember much about his death, only that he'd ventured out to look for someone missing and then he didn't come back, outside of a ghostly form he supposed.
"But, I didn't stay dead."
Obviously.

Babylon nodded. It wasn't unheard of for people to come back from the dead, although getting a starseed back from the Cauldron before the full reincarnation cycle had worked itself out took tremendous amounts of power. Still, he supposed that anything was possible when great cosmic powers were in play. The Surrounding, while not something you could sit down and have a conversation with, had magic of its own - and likely a will of its own, as well. "I can see why that would be upsetting," said Babylon, fighting the very strong temptation to go and, like, pat Aluminite on the shoulders. He could do that with other knights, but with a Negaverser... better to keep his hands to himself. "Was it the Surrounding that brought you back?" he asked.

"It's definitely not something I advertise," Aluminite attempted to joke. "It makes finding a life partner hard, y'know. How do you sell that? Hey, looking for someone with shared life experience of dying, being a ghost, and somehow being resurrected." Not that he was looking for a partner, but it helped sooth his queasiness a little bit. "Without sounding like a lunatic."
He could feel the bile still threatening to crawl up his throat. He didn't want to puke on Babylon, it seemed like poor manners.
"I-- M-Metallia did," he answered, but sounded uncertain and his head was spinning. "I think." He frowned, desperately trying to recall his memories but they were flickers of things nothing solid. All he got was static. "But -- all of us, we all came back." He'd hardly seen any of the civilians that'd gone missing with him among his ranks.
It didn't make sense, none of it did.
"Wait -- that's not--" He interrupted himself by lurching forward and spilling his guts across the concrete. Whoops.

Babylon took a hasty step backwards as the fountain of vomit erupted out of his new friend (because once you'd puked all over someone's boots, you were on that level). "Woah," he exclaimed, bile rising in his own throat. He swallowed it down - one of them needed to keep their wits about them, and seeing as Aluminite was indisposed, that burden had fallen to him. Babylon shoved the alethiometer back into his pocket and set a careful hand on the lieutenant's shoulder. "You okay, man?" he asked. Something had triggered that, he thought, eyebrow furrowing. Something about this subject matter was negatively charged; traumatic. "We can - we can change the subject," he said, despite his desire to prod further. Aluminite had gone from saying Metallia resurrected him to questioning the memory within a few breaths. There was more to the memory than that, beneath all the brainwashing... but you had to move carefully. Memory was a tricky thing.

Aluminite's entire body was shaking, trembling from throwing up and the mere idea that he was meant to be one of the surrounding. It didn't make sense, none of it made sense. His head hurt and he sway unsteadily beneath the hand on his shoulder.
"I don't--" he felt queasy again, turning his head to empty his stomach of it's contents again. The man sunk down to his knees, arms folding across his stomach, breathing in and out raggedly.
His mouth tasted like bile and he was forever grateful that he hadn't eaten anything he particularly enjoyed recently. "You're-- You've got to be wrong." He couldn't be Chronos, he wasn't meant for the surrounding. "I'm not-- I'm not!"

Babylon hesitated as Aluminite vomited again - puke was never one of his specialties. Neither, for that matter, were panic attacks, but he was just going to muddle through somehow. "You're right," he said, inching towards Aluminite. He didn't want to crowd him, but then again Babylon always thought he worked best with physical contact. "I've got know way of knowing the thing's accuracy." Except that it had been right in every test he could think of. Titan. Camlann. But if knowing there might be some doubt would ease Aluminite's panic, then Babylon was willing to undersell his own tech. He just wouldn't tell Mistral he'd done so. "I'm going to put my hand on your back - is that okay?" he asked, reaching tentatively for the lieutenant. "Can I, uh, can I do that?"

You're lying, you're lying, Aluminite thought when Babylon was trying to backtrack, claim something he didn't think was true.
He recoiled away when the knight attempted to touch him. "D-don't touch me." His body trembled and he scuttled away, well, to his best ability. "Don't--" He wiped at his mouth with the back of his hand when he looked up at the man. "I--I think I should--"
He didn't finish, because he was scrambling to his feet and while he felt like he might throw up again, the hammering in his chest encouraged him to get far, far away. It was all too much, he couldn't handle it.
So he did what any rational person would do, he tried to run away.

Babylon pulled his hand back, quietly said, "Sorry," and then watched to see what the lieutenant would do next... which was try to run away. Babylon didn't expect him to get far, unstable on his feet as he was. He chased after Aluminite, hoping to catch up with him and talk him through his panic. In his experience, it wasn't good to leave people scared. Not when you could still try to talk to them. Fear being a thing that lead to the dark side. Or whatever. "Wait up!" Babylon called. Maybe he could still fix this. He hoped he could still fix this, since he'd kind of forced the issue and caused this mess in the first place.

He stumbled over his own feet as he hurried across the rooftop, careened into the ground pitifully in a tangle of limbs. His chest was heaving and he was pretty sure that the world was actually spinning at the rate it should around him. It did little to curb his nausea.
"N-no!" he protested weakly, attempting to scramble to his feet only to stagger around off balance.
His heart was in his ears and all he could think was get away, get away, get away. "I shouldn't have-- I need to--"

Babylon caught up to the lieutenant again. Looked him over. Thought he was probably doing more harm than good here. Took a few slow steps forward and offered him a hand. "Sorry about..." he pulled a face. "This. You can go. Just... be careful." He'd definitely ******** this one up, he thought, looking down at the lieutenant's clammy face. It didn't look like there was any saving this situation, so he'd might as well just... abort mission. The best he could hope for was to leave the proverbial door open and hope Aluminite sought him out again later.

In truth, there was a part of Aluminite that was about to burst into tears from the overwhelming amount of stress that this meeting had brought upon him but he didn't. He couldn't cry, not in the open, not in the presence of someone who was supposed to be the enemy.
"You shouldn't-- I shouldn't have--" He couldn't form coherent sentences when he picked himself off the ground, ignoring the offered hand.
"Please don't-- Please don't say anything about me. To anyone." What would he do if his general found out about the conversation, about his alignment.
He shuddered from the sheer thought and once again put distance between himself and the Mercury knight.
