"Granddad, man, I'm twenty," Micah sounded only a little irritable about the correction. "If I'm your granddad there's something real wrong." "Oh my - oof!" Instinctively, he grabbed for Horace's shirt with his off hand, and acted on the rapid flicker of half an idea, turning the hand that clutched Nova's handle and bringing the rounded end of it around to smack into the side of Horace's head. "I've had older," he said flippantly, and only had a moment to regret his words before Nova was smacking into his temple. He staggered, blinking stars from his eyes. His returning swipe was a half-hearted thing, off-balance and clumsy. He scooted away from Micah and, despite the surprise of it, he looked pleased. "Now that was neatly done." His mouth kicked up at one corner. "Do it again." HP: 40/50 DMG: 2 CHG: 2/3

The comment got a stare that was about midway between confusion and deliberate incomprehension. Micah was not addressing that idea."Yeah but I'd have to grab you to do that," he retorted, and tried to bring Nova's lash around at Horace again. He misjudged the distance and angle, and the blades passed harmlessly wide. HP: 25/40 Dmg: - Charge: 2/3

"I'm not objecting to that," he said as Micah's swing went wide. "But what about-" Horace ducked around Micah, grabbing his arm (the one without Nova, because he certainly didn't relish the idea of a face full of whip), and twisting it up behind Micah's back. "What if I grab you?" HP: 40/50 DMG: 4 CHG: 3/3

Micah yelped as his arm was twisted, and promptly jabbed the other elbow back toward Horace's stomach, hard. He flexed both shoulders back to give himself a little room to work with, then yanked the trapped arm forward, bringing his elbow up and his captured wrist forward under it so that the upper arm would knock Horace's hand away. He jumped forward and turned, a small smirk pulling on one side of his mouth. "Man, I been getting grabbed at by zombies for a month before I got here. ... I feel stronger. Is that Nova doing that?" Micah's elbow neatly knocked the wind out of Horace. Still, he could admire the skill used to break his hold. He held up long enough to slash downwards against Micah's back before shuffling off to a (perhaps) safer distance. "Comparing me to a zombie? I think I'm more lively, at least. What's the rule for zombies - double-tap?" Horace huffed out an amused breath. "Being a hunter makes you stronger, so yeah, Nova and being not-quite human anymore." HP: 35/50 DMG: 5 CHG: 3/3

Micah stumbled forward, hissing, at the strike to his back. "It's just, you know. Make sure it's dead and not just down." Nova was purring at him in his head, making some rather disturbing noises, until he grimaced and said, What IS it??Use me, she purred. Let me do it, let me do thing. She giggled. Probably we make him fall down. What?Use me! she shrieked, and his hands moved, following her insistent guidance, his off hand taking hold of her lash between two sets of blades and pulling it taut between the handle and his grip. Yessss, she hissed, and a swirling, glittering cloud of glowing yellow-gold particles erupted from the whip, puffing up and outward and seeming to reach out toward Horace. Then, suddenly, it collapsed backward to close around Micah, and he yelped as it came in contact with his skin, burning and stinging wherever it touched. "********! Nova, what - Ow!" He dropped his hold on the lash, though he didn't drop her entirely, and jumped back, trying to escape the cloud. It followed him, stinging and sticking, until it dissolved as quickly as it had appeared. Oops, she said, and sounded actually apologetic. HP: 3 Dmg: Miss, 13 to self Charge: 3/3

"Double-tap means something different for the live ones." Or was that double-something-else? Horace found he didn't care as much - Nova was being distracting. And then he ducked because what the s**t was that and it was coming towards him and then, it wasn't. He watched from eyes squeezed half-shut as the cloud of golden dust collapsed towards Micah like a dying star. Horace was very glad it hadn't hit him. It did not look at all like a thing he'd enjoy. He took advantage of the miss, though, and dodged around it, aiming his fist into Micah's gut. Punch first, ask questions later. The punch caught Micah off guard, distracted and shocked as he was by the golden cloud that had -- had backfired? Was that right? Nova hadn't seemed like she intended to attack her wielder -- and he folded over and tipped back, landing hard on his a** with his arms folded around his stomach as something cracked and splintered.
He cautiously pulled his arm away from his ribs, expecting a spike of pain from the bone that must have cracked, but there was ... nothing? Only a soreness, a tiredness, and a sharp stinging on his forearm where Nova's blades had sliced him when he fell, uncontrolled. Nova made a frustrated whining noise that had no words and dissolved, turning back into the delicate, pretty bracelet on his right ********," Micah grumbled. "I think I lost. I thought I broke something, but ... I don't know, nothing feels broken?"

"Yep," he looked down at Micah. "I think you lost, too. You ok?" Horace grinned and de-summoned Jannisari. Rolling his shoulders (the sudden lifting of Jannisari's weight was always strangely startling), he looked Micah over critically. "Don't really break bones on the field. It might have been your shield - it cracks or whatever when it gets too weak. I think everyone's feels a bit different. Mine kinda feels like tearing wet tissue paper, only more painful. It's kind of neat feeling, actually." He stretched out a hand to Micah. "Need a hand?"

Micah growled and pushed back up to his feet. "Felt like ... splintering. Kinda like a board snapping under pressure. Sharp and splintery." To Nova, he said, What the hell was that?Meant hit him, Nova muttered, apologetic. No mean hit you. Oops. I sorry.Yeah, sure, fine, but what WAS it?Pollen, duh."Pollen?" Micah said aloud, frowning. That's kind of gross, Nova.He only got a giggle in response, the remorseful feeling lifting as quickly as it had come on.

Definitely different, he thought. Sharp and splintery - like bones cracking, pushed too long at the wrong angle. Interesting. "So what'd you think of your spar - was your first? Or at least your first shield pop?" Horace rocked back on his heels, obviously still full of energy and adrenaline. "Wait. That... that cloud of poofy s**t was pollen? Is Nova some kinda flower fairy?" He frowned.

"Yeah, hadn't fought anyone," Micah admitted, his shoulders hunching a little, pride still stinging. The fact that it was his first fight helped, though; you rarely succeeded entirely the first time you tried anything. No FAIRY, Nova hissed, offended. Vines! I tentacle trap, beautiful flower, but no FAIRY."She says she was ... vines? A tentacle trap," Micah relayed, frowning. "She really, really didn't like being called a fairy."

"When I first came here, I lost pretty much every fight," Horace said cheerfully. He had liked losing, too, and not just for the sting of pain (though that was definitely a factor). "Losing helps you learn 'n stuff, y'know?" He really should go shower or something. Instead, he leaned on a conveniently nearby dummy (Castor the Unwell). "No fairy-calling? I'll note that down, r-. Wait. Tentacles. Really?" He looked at Micah assessingly. Whips, tentacles, manacles in his room. "A man with his own tentacle monster, imagine that. Almost makes me envious."
