With that smug grin came a vicious desire to slam the business end of one of the tonfas into Austin's smug face. It was sudden, unexpected, and gone just as quickly. Washed away in a wave of gut wrenching guilt. Instead, taking advantage of the fumbled bolt, Liam snapped forward to hook the toe of his left foot behind one of Austin's knees, jerking him off balance so the shorter boy could smack the length of one heavy, club-like weapon against the small of his back. Liam hooked him -- and Austin, unprepared, was knocked off-balance and then to the ground, with a whuf of breath that finally knocked the satisfied expression off his face. For just a moment, he was stunned: glasses crooked, eyes mildly confused, struggling to put his world right again -- He managed another shot. It only barely dinged off of Liam's shield. "Well, you're learning at least." HP: 26/40 Charge: 1/3 DMG: 1

Liam didn't quite avoid the sloppily fired bolt, it dinged off his shoulder at the hip, but it was a glancing thing, barely felt, barely damaging, and therefore very easy to ignore. Especially now that Austin was no longer smiling. If he could beat him, make him see that they were more equal than the other boy was ever willing to believe, let alone admit. Might level the playing field a bit, get Austin off his back. Maybe. "Learn fast or die quick, right?" Liam swung again, as Asutin got back to his feet, aiming low, at his hip. HP: 20 DMG: 2 CHG: 3/3

"A shame you've always been so slow, then." Austin stumbled back as Liam hit him, couldn't quite get the bolt notched in time -- but that didn't kill his unwavering self-certainty, didn't take the holier-than-thou edge out of his voice. "You'll catch on eventually." HP: 24/40 Charge: 1/3 DMG: 0

Liam snorted, body tense as he watched the other boy attempt to notch another arrow, ready to dodge what never came. "Only in academics." God, he'd be an awful student. Not bright, not able to retain information well, and terribly susceptible to nerves when it came to test taking. "We both now I was ace in athletics though." He swung as he darted closer, clipping Austin's shield with the slimmer end of a tonfa. "And a fast learner when it came to anything physical." There was a touch of heat to his features, a certain flustered irritation. He didn't want to rekindle anything with Austin, he was happy with Harper, but it didn't sit well with him when Austin played it off like things hadn't been...well, good. It didn't mean much to the blonde, and why would it? How many others had he managed to seduce during his run at school? For Liam though, it meant something, because it had been his first time, because he hadn't realized a lot about himself until then, and because even if he hated himself for it, there were times over the last year he'd found himself missing it. Him. HP: 20 DMG: 1 CHG: 3/3

"I think that probably has more to do with the people training you than your own skill." The bolt fell into place and Austin let fly -- with a shot that struck true, this time, not even the glancing tonfa blow sending it wild. He smiled, once, brief: tight and sharp, his chin tipped up a little bit. "And even then, it takes a bit of honing you into a shape, I think." He worked on settling the next one, and then shrugged one shoulder at Liam. "And you're still afraid to fight dirty." HP: 23/40 Charge: 2/3 DMG: 7

The bolt took away a chunk of his shield, but it was the words that stung the worst. Liam flinched, features melting into something angry and petulant, and despite his best efforts to hide it, hurt. He hated that Austin could hurt him so easily. He hated that he cared what the other boy thought, that he gave his opinion any weight at all. He hated himself for being weak enough to let him under his skin over and over, and for the original sin. He just wanted to be strong. ~ I'll make you strong.~ How?~ You'll see.~ Wicked laughed, and Liam felt the surge of Fear like an electrical rush that sent his nerve endings tingling. Pleasant at first, but then painful. ~ Strength doesn't come without pain and sacrifice. Now move.~ He did as he was told, surging forward in a rush of speed that was unexpected even for himself, and when he lashed out, striking Austin with the thick end of the tonfa, he'd meant it to hurt, but he hadn't expected that level of power behind it. And he certainly hadn't expected, a moment later, to feel the odd sensation of something cracking. Wicked sighed, a deeply sated sort of sound, and then there was a shattering, and whatever boost Liam had had a second before was gone. Stumbling, he barely managed to keep his feet beneath him as he backed away a couple of steps, eyes a touch wide. HP: 13 - 27 = 0 DMG: 17 CHG: 0/3

He did, at least, have the satisfaction of hitting Austin really hard -- a blow across the chest and shoulder that drove him not just back but to land in the dirt on his a** hard enough to make him drop his weapon, to sit dazed for a moment instead of immediately retaliating in full force. Instead, it was a count of about five or six before he shoved himself up to stand again and drew a fresh bolt on his bow, fingers curled near his cheek -- the voice in the back of his mind told him that it was over, but in a disappointed sort of way. Bad form. Took himself out. Deprived us of our kill."I could shoot him anyway," Austin replied, as if he was speaking to someone over his shoulder, fingers shifting against the string. Don't bother, was the reply, with a growl like a grumpy bear. It would do nothing.. So he shrugged -- but didn't put down the bow. "Yield."

It was more satisfying than it should have been, knocking Austin on his a**, but it came with an almost instant wave of guilt for taking any sort of pleasure in it at all. For a second, while the Mist was down, Liam thought maybe he'd won this, but then the taller boy was climbing to his feet, knocking another bolt into place, and Liam was staring up at him, features defiant, though a touch puzzled when Austin spoke. It hadn't been directed to him, so it must have been to the other boy's weapon. Dismissive, it only seemed to make the Moon pissier. His fingers tightened on the handles of the tonfa, weapons rising an inch or two even as Austin demanded he yield. "No." It was stupid, he knew it was, but still he said it.

There was a pause, quiet and considering, his eyes narrowed to slits -- and then, pointedly, he let the bolt fly. Liam got lucky: Austin pulled the shot just a little at the end, so instead of striking somewhere tender and dangerous, it hit the ground near his feet just hard enough to send a spray up against his legs. Austin's eyes were sharp. " Yield Johnson." His tone was sharper.

Shield broken, he could feel the sting of energy against his shin. It was like being hit with hot ash, sparks bouncing off his legs, and he took a single step back, but his arms didn't lower. Dark eyes were still defiant, still resolute as he stare back at Austin. "No." Fingers flexed, knuckles paling with his grip. "Make me." ~ I admire your resolve, but this is unwise.~

"I can, if that's how this needs to end." He raised his aim a little hire this time, bolt striking near Liam's shoulder instead -- and in the back of his mind, Hey rumbled her approval as well as several more suggestions as to where he could aim the thing. "You are well and truly beaten."

That might have done it. The force of the bolt spun him around, throwing him off his feet to send him sprawling across the patchy grass. Wicked disappeared a second after the tonfas had fell from his grip materializing back around his left wrist, his voice echoing through the Moon's head in a disappointed sigh. Liam didn't move for a moment, but when he did, trying to get back to his feet, he winced, grabbing for the shoulder that last arrow had struck. It was bruised for sure, possibly even halfway to dislocated, and there was no on to blame for it but his own dumb self and his temper. ~ I admire your spirit, but you're no good to anyone damaged.~

"Are we done?" Exasperated, it came out sharp -- and Austin still had another bolt drawn, ready to fire if he really needed to. It wasn't like he could actually do any permanent damage to Liam, here. Just bruises, the things his weapons could heal quickly. But maybe he would have anyway, out of a rising fury. He'd won damnit.

The words stung, God, they did. Just once-- just once--he wanted to come out on top. Just once he wanted to prove that he could be better, that he could win, and that he wasn't weak or worth nothing. He'd thought he was over all this, thought he'd moved past it after Austin had graduated, but maybe it was just distance. Lips drawn back, teeth clenched so tight they damn near squeaked from the force of it, Liam gave an almost imperceptible shake of his head before opening his mouth to answer. "For now."
