For a moment, Duga didn't say anything. She'd never heard of a place that never had lean winters. However, it was possible, she supposed, that her savior wasn't a mini like her but rather a foal. If that was the case, then it was also possible that her parents were protecting her from the harsher truths of the worlds. Somehow that didn't seem to ring quite true to Duga.

"Nova," she murmured, choosing to think about something else. The stranger was correct. There wasn't much she could do about it now, so she might as well focus on something else. "Like a star, or sun?"

"Like a star," Nova confirmed. She eased them forward another step. She could see the mouth of the cave now, though it looked like a pinprick in the distance. She hadn't realized until just then how far she had gone before she considered turning back. Or maybe it just seemed like a much further distance now that she was supporting someone. "My parents named me after my aunt... well, she's not really an aunt. She's not really a she. Have you ever heard the legend of the Wishing Star?"

Duga had to think for a moment before she recalled the urban myth. There were diffrent variations on it all over the place, but the gist of it was... "Soquili make a wish on a star, and supposedly, if the spirits desire it, their wish comes true. Or something like that. It's a story that parents tell their children to give them hope." At least that was what she had always believed. What could that have to do with Nova and her not-really-an-aunt aunt?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 05, 2015 4:35 pm

"That's it, basically," Nova agreed. "Mom used to tell us about the star a lot when we were growing up. She refers to it as Aunt Astrid, though. Not sure why she chose to call it that, exactly, but she's a strong believer in the Star. No reason to doubt her, I guess. Not with the proof she's got. Now, I've never been out of the valley before, but my sisters and brother have, and they've told me that most full sized soq can't have children with minis like us. But Mom and Dad wished on the wishing star, on Aunt Astrid, and they were blessed with my older sisters, Akis and Addy. Then with Akis and Addy grew up and took off, Mom made another wish and Wolf and I were born. So it's not really a matter of belief, I guess. Anyway, Mom named me Nova in honor of the star. She talks to Aunt Astrid once a month, at least, still."

Duga could hear the honesty in Nova's voice, but she had trouble buying into the idea that the person who was helping her, who felt real and solid, was some kind of miracle provided by a ball of gas in the sky. Duga wasn't exactly a cynic, but everyone had their limits, and the wishing star? Really? She shook her head as they moved forward another step. "Are you sure your folks didn't just tell you all that so you wouldn't be upset about not being related to them?" she asked. Almost immediately she wished she hadn't. What a rude thing to say! Not to mention unkind, if Nova honestly did believe that.

For a second, Nova was offended. She shook the feeling off quickly enough, though. Looking at the situation from the outside, she could see how it all seemed a bit off. So, instead of snapping, she shook her head. "Nah, if you saw us all together, you'd see that we're related," she assured Duga. "I've got Mom's eyes, and Akis and Wolf have Dad's. Plus I look almost exactly like Dad, except for the eyes and size. And even if they weren't our parents by blood, they'd still be our parents. Mom's not big on formalities. You'll see when you meet her."

"Meet her? Is that where we're going?" Duga asked. She considered flirting a bit and mentioning that this was all so sudden. Usually she liked to get to know someone before meeting their parents. But she still wasn't fully convinced that the person helping her wasn't a foal, and flirting with a child was just... wrong. So very wrong. So she bit her tongue on that.

"Well, not right away," Nova admitted as they moved forward another step. They were getting closer to the exit now, and she could see that the sun was pretty far in the sky. She had started exploring in the morning... it looked as though more of the day had passed than she realized. "We'll go to Midagi's place first. He's closer, and he's got better supplies. Once you're fed and rested, I'll n** back home and see if Mom wants to come to you or if she wants you to come to her. Pretty much anyone who stays in the valley for any real amount of time needs to talk to Mom. She's pretty protective over her family."

"Who said anything about staying?" Duga murmured. Though she had been regretting the lack of a home not more than a few hours ago, she was too much of a wanderer to not resent the idea of being tied down. Even exhausted and near starved, she realized how irrational that idea was. She wanted a home, but she didn't want to stay in one place for too long... Talk about impossible. She sighed a bit.

"Ah, I didn't mean to imply..." Nova shook her head slightly. "You'll need time to rest and recuperate, regardless. So you'll be staying that long at the very least. We don't really have a healer, not an official one, anyway, so there's no one to tell you you're not ready to leave when you want to. You can head out at any time... or you can stay as long as you want." Provided Nova's mother didn't mind, though Nova couldn't think of any reason she would.

"You don't have a healer?" Duga asked. The fact that she could leave whenever she wanted actually eased up the anxiety of being pinned down. Later, Duga would analyze her odd flip flopping emotions. For now, she was focused on moving forward toward the light that was burning through her closed eyes, and the mare beside her. "I thought all herds have a healer."
PostPosted: Thu Nov 05, 2015 8:54 pm

"Do they?" Nova asked, curiously. "I didn't know that... we're not really a herd. Not officially. Mom is just working with some of the other soquili in this valley. She seems to feel that there's safety in numbers or something. Would we need a healer if she decided to make us all a herd?"

"I... suppose not," Duga frowned. "Honestly, I've never been part of a herd before, so I'm not certain. I don't think that there's really a set formula that creates an official herd. They're all different. It's just that the big ones tend to follow a certain... erm... pattern. One that includes healers."

Nova thought about that as she eased them forward another step. Having a healer made a lot of sense. It was something that her mother had been grumbling about for awhile. However, there wasn't much that could be done about it without leaving the valley. They were in a a small, isolated patch of the world. Those that came to settle there either found it by accident, like Duga did, or settled there deliberately to get away from the world, like Nova's parents. Or, like Midagi, simply hadn't thought about how far apart their little valley was.

"We're almost there," Nova informed Duga, putting the concept aside for later thought. "Just a few more steps. How are your eyes holding up?"

Duga turned her attention away from her general aches and pains and focused it on her eyes. They still stung, and the light was cutting through her eyelids to blind her. But it was no worse than it had been at the beginning. She could only assume that they were moving further into the light. So, if her eyes weren't burning any more, then she must be adjusting to the light, just not quickly enough.

"They still hurt," she admitted. "And it's still so bright. But no more so than at the beginning. What time is it?" Maybe it was nighttime, with nothing but the moon and stars out to adjust to. That would certainly make things better, but Duga didn't think she'd get quite that lucky.
