Once Nev was seated, Noble began cutting up the roast, which was indeed very much on the rare side. “No, thank-“ Cirrus started but was cut off when the other stallion dumped a very red, very big piece of meat onto his plate with a ‘splat’. “O-oh, okay then.” He blanched and slowly inched his plate away from him. “Eat up,” Noble told him with a grin and then served everyone else a slightly less terrifying looking section. He sat down next to Nevermore, reclining back on his chair. “Yes, do give us some good insight. I must admit I was surprised to learn of your budding relationship, though I’m also delighted.” “Um,” Cirrus stared at his plate. He didn’t want to answer. Answering seemed like a very very bad idea. But not answering would just set Nevermore off. It was better to give her something to chew on. “I would miss… she is… I don’t…” What was he even supposed to say? That somehow being around her had stopped being terrifying. That it was almost comforting. That most nights he couldn’t sleep because he was thinking about her in the bathtub, wondering if she was lonely. “Everything,” he said finally, looking up and forcing his gaze to meet Nevermore’s. Go on, he quietly challenged, what are you going to do about it? Noble Born gave a delighted bark of laughter.

As Cirrus' plate inched away La Llorona reached over and took it for herself. She moved the meat to her own plate and handed the empty one back to her fiance. "And why wouldn't he miss everything? I've brought so much adventure and excitement to his life. Isn't that right, Little Ghost? " LaLo cut the conversation off decisively by taking her turn. The smell of his tea in the morning. The soft hum of his conversations with his animal companions behind closed doors ... but those were thoughts best kept hidden and pushed deep, deep, down. Though she had found herself wishing more often that the nights would stop being so lonely and cold. Instead she smiled like a predator and replied in a cool tone; "I'd miss our stimulating conversations, of course! Did you know there's doom all around us and everything is terrible?"

Nev pointed her fork at Cirrus. "I said that MY answer." It seemed she was going to brandish it violently before pushing it into the meat on her plate, starting to cut into it. "But it was honest." She smirked and went in to start really teasing before Lalo interrupted. "It is true too, it's how I make my money. Oh you're spouce is feeling less for you. Oh your boss hates you. Ohhhh sorrow sorrow sadness. But we're all together now and it's hardly sad at all! Just two loving couples having dinner and conversation together." There was a lilt to her tone and she grinned as she politely chewed.

"Everything is terrible," Cirrus murmured, staring at his now mostly empty plate, with only the smudge of blood left behind. Lalo’s words, surprisingly, hurt, because he hadn’t expected her to make fun of his doomsaying. She was cruel sometimes, but lately her attacks had been easy to overlook, directionless. "It’s all terrible, horrendous, which is actually delightful and very good for business, especially now darling Nev has cornered the market." Noble added, alluding to Cirrus no longer practising his fortune telling. "You know, you should both stay the night. We have heaps of space and it’s going to start raining soon." Cirrus pushed his chair away from the table. "I want to go home."

She could feel it in her chest before anyone else said anything more. She'd hurt him, and more interestingly, it had hurt her as well. She hadn't meant for it to come out so awful. She ground her teeth and stared blankly at her uneaten food. Cirrus stood abruptly and she didn't disagree. She set her napkin on the table and calmly stood to stand next to him. "Don't get used to business being so good for much longer." Her voice was low and dark. "If it's what Cirrus wants he can open his shop back up and I'll stay far far away from his clients, and you know he's more talented then you are. Otherwise you wouldn't have needed him to close down for business to boom." She glanced sideways at Cirrus, standing there in what looked like almost the brink of outrage, and felt. She'd been doing that a lot lately ... feeling things. This time it didn't annoy her as much. "I'd rather drown myself then stay another moment in this wretched place. Everything is not terrible- Only you two are." And myself. I'm terrible, too.

There was a sparke of real annoyance across Nevermore's face and her eyes flashed. Whatever Cirrus may have thought upon his arrival, no one was in any real danger in Nev and Noble's home. Except now. Now in this moment Nev could conceivably launch over the table and pummel one or the both of them. If there was a time to be really scared, it was in this second. And then it passed. Nev settled a little further back into her chair, picking up her coffee cup and taking silent sip. She was going to be the bigger phony here and let it slide. She wasn't entirely sure Noble's motives here and starting a real fight would only upset him. She knew her roll in whatever little scene this was was over. She'd played her part. "C'est la vie." she said into her drink using the cup to help cover her annoyance, though all the sing song had been wrenched out of her tone. "Competition is good for businesses, it'll just make me better at what I do. It's a shame you must leave so soon after Noble worked so hard on dinner but if you insist...." she trailed off, her eyes closing, and sipping her drink. As far as she was concerned, they knew where the door was and they could get the hell out.

She didn't move from her protective spot just beside Cirrus, but La Llorona did take a steadying breath. Her usual self came out again, but it was strained. "I'm sure that's the truth, Nev, darling. There are plenty of people out there that need a good doomsaying. Or drowning." She'd really done it. Noble and Nevermore were the closest she'd had to friends in the whole of her existence, but they never should have pushed it with Cirrus. She could take it. She deserved it. He didn't. He dealt with enough living with her as it was. She straightened herself up and nudged Cirrus towards the door indicating that he should head out and she'd catch up. Once she was sure he was out and moving she turned on Noble and Nevermore. "I'm sorry for the outburst. Your business will do just fine as you prey on the weak and stupid, of that I have no doubt. I don't know what got into me, but I'll see us out. Thank you for the delightful meal, Noble. Maybe another time we'll actually get to eat it with you, but as your sister said c'est la vie." LaLo took a breath and took a moment to think about what she wanted to say. "Antagonize me all you want. Push and needle at me, but never. Ever. Again. Never attack Cirrus. He's mine and I won't let others hurt him." With that she turned and headed towards the door.

The hurt he’d felt was almost immediately erased. The moment she stood up beside him to declare this dinner over, to defend him, Cirrus nearly burst into tears. There was a lump in his throat and a warmth in his chest that he hadn’t expected. He was suddenly aware of that strange emotion he’d been ignoring for weeks now and it made horrible sense. He said nothing else, just followed her directions and left her there in the dining room to face down Nevermore and Noble Born. Outside to stand in the night, staring up at the heavy clouds and listening to the rumble of thunder. It was definitely going to rain. But something more, there was something else written in the sky and he could hardly bear to look at it. When La Llorona joined him, they walked home in silence, except for two words, “Thank you.” ~o~ “Well, that was interesting…” Noble Born lounged back in his chair and tapped a hoof against the table, not at all bothered that his dinner was sitting there getting cold. It would simply mean there would be leftovers and if he was feeling magnanimous, he might deliver a bit to their guests for their lunch tomorrow. He grinned at his sister, glad to have served her up something even better than a delicious meal. “I hadn’t expected their relationship to progress quite so far. It will be fun to see just how far it goes.” LOLLI qAq Thank you for the lovely rp!
