Well, that certainly didn't go as planned. The other took his booty bump in stride and it ticked him off!

"What I'm supposed to do? Hell, do you think the Negaverse is going to pay attention to what we 'should or shouldn't' do? Yeah, you should try using that excuse on one of them, and see how that goes!"

Gods was be beginning to loath that smile. In pure irritation his fists began to ball up tighter within the gloves. John Jr. could stand to lose a few teeth, in his opinion. But he'd have to do this fair and square. He didn't want to appear any less in Vanessa's eyes.

So he did try again, this time coming at him with a right punch to the face. He through his entire weight into it, knowing it would throw his own self off balance, but that's why his hand was down low, to make sure he would be able to catch himself.

John Jr supposed that Benji had a point. There was no guarantee the Negaverse would play clean- Ophelia had insisted as much before, and often. She worried about him. Like Vanessa did. For all of the same reasons, and then others. He narrowed his eyes at Benji, considering -for the first time- that the other boy had known it was against the rules to kick in boxing.

It upset him. The idea that Benji had tried to cheat on purpose. John Jr had known cheaters before, and disliked all of them. More than the prospect of villains or bad guys or murderers alone. He understood, of course, that each of those types of people could also be cheaters-- that was to say, someone who pretended at something that they were not. Someone who broke the rules of the game and then lied about it. Ignorance was forgivable. And, while a confessed murderer could not be absolved of his crimes simply for being honest, Syrtis saw something worth respecting in the ownership of offense.

He turned his face when Benji struck. The punch landed on his ear instead of his cheek, and started up a ringing. He stumbled backwards. Caught himself on the ropes. Scowling, John Jr tried to ignore the ache in the side of his head, and then braced himself again. Gloves up.

"Come on," he said, beckoning Benji closer again.

The next time the other boy swung, John Jr told himself, he would not be so succesful. He was more than prepared for this. Benji was tiny and probably a cheater. By the right of the rules, the win already belonged to him.

He waited. Prepared, this time, both to block and to strike back. He held a glove up -to protect his face- and then jabbed at Benji's nose with the other one.

The punch landed and GODS did it feel good! Just like that feeling of drinking water after being parched from being outside all day. It was satisfying and refreshing and brought the anger levels he had been feeling before down quite a few notches.

Benji didn't really feel like hurting the other terribly anymore, there was no anger behind his next swing, so maybe that's why it was blocked so easily. When he fought angry he always seemed to have a veil of red before his eyes that made him near lose control, but when it was fizzled out it was as if he had no idea what amount of strength another person had.

And in this case, he didn't have time to stop and think about his next move, since a Jab made contact with his face. <********! You ******** b*****d!" It was prompt and curt and he stumbled backwards quickly, grabbing at his face. It wasn't so much that the jab to the nose hurt that bad, it was the area near it that was still in pain. From the whole fiasco in the train station, Benji had lost most of the sight in his one eye, which was cloudy and fuddled up with blood. The eye socket around the area had been badly bruised a month or two ago, and though the healing came quick, He still had that constant pain throbbing in his eye. Over all, he was pretty good at hiding he felt anything there (plus being pissed all the time kinda numbs other things) but that indirect contact caused one hell of a lightning strike of pain to take over.

And with that pain came that red veil. He was pissed now. He was hurt, he was actually hurting! And maybe there was a little triggering fear there too of that General who had hurt him like that in the first place. Not that Toilet boy knew that, not did Vanessa knew, since he hadn't bothered to tell either of them when he arrived. They didn't need to know, and he had been more than confidant in his abilities to keep himself safe. That turned out well, didn't it?

Benji straight up snarled and launched himself at Jr. side first, ignoring the watering his eye was giving off. Atleast it wasn't more blood. Now wouldn't THAT have been a sight to see! His actions weren't a move to cause direct damage, no, it was a move to get the boy on the ground, pinned, and to wail on him like the b*****d killed his dog. It was rage driven, and if he hadn't had gloves on, he probably would have tried to get his hands around Jr's throat. If he managed to get the other on the ground at all. He wasn't the biggest person around.

Woah.

He was an athletic boy. Had been playing sports since the moment he was old enough to get his fingers around a baseball. He had learned how to play fair. How to win and lose graciously. To say that he was unprepared for Benji's attack was an understatement.

He grunted when the smaller boy made contact. Stumbled back into the ropes again. Sensing the urgency of his own safety, John Jr shed his gloves to get Benji in a headlock. He twined his arms around the other boy's neck, careful not to cut off too much of his blood supply and trapped him under an armpit.

"Chill out," he hissed, face turning red with the effort of holding Benji in place, "Chill. Out."

Vanessa was at the ropes suddenly, climbing into the ring and getting between them.

"Let him go," she said, "JR, let him go."

John Jr ignored her.

"Not until he calms the ******** down. This was a boxing match. Did he think I wasn't going to hit him in the face? What the <********> Vanessa."

Quite frankly, Benji knew jack s**t about boxing. Or actual fighting. Or how to escape a choke hold. And at this point, he couldn't think about it. There were flashback to that time in the train station, of being held in place with knives being pushed into his side, of knees going where they didn't need to go, of bleeding, of being tired, of just being done. He couldn't stop his flailing and growling, fearing for his life at this point in some sort of back corner of his mind where the Negaverse had sunk their claws deep into.

Part of him wanted to pass out while he was struggling in John Jr's grip. If he did pass out then it wouldn't hurt when they hurt him again. He wouldn't be stuck there clawing and grasping at whatever pain he felt, thinking about it over and over again. But he couldn't give up. Even if blood began to well up in the bottom of his eye, as if his eye was tearing on it's own. The strain from the fight caused too much pressure to swell up and the already weak blood vessels just gave in.

It wasn't until he felt a hand on his side, and the voice of someone he actually trusted did he stop to think about where he was. Vanessa... She seemed to just take the fire out of him with her motherly touch. And his hands came up again, gripping onto the arm around his neck, trying to pull it away.

"Let me go, a*****e... Just let me go. I'm okay..." Oh god, he sounded so meek and tired now... ********, Jr wouldn't let him live it down, just knew it. But screw wounded pride, he just wanted to get the blood off of his face.

John Jr released Benji. Once he was sure that Benji would not try to kill him. He let go and stepped away in one fluid moment, the corner of his lips curling. Benji certainly didn't look okay -with that blood oozing out of the bottom of his eye- but it wasn't in John Jr to work up sympathy for somebody who didn't know how to play fair. Somebody who was such a cheater. His own temper was running high, hot as the fire of Mars. He blew air out of his nose.

"What a waste of time," he drawled, slipping between the ropes and out of the boxing ring.

Vanessa was too busy with Benji to scold. She clutched his face in her hands, searched his eyes with hers.

"s**t," she said, voice soft and concerned. There's so much blood. Where did it come from? His eye? "We should get you to the emergency room."

In the background John Jr took up the space next to a boxing bag. He shook out his arms. Squared up his shoulders and then hit it. With his bare hands. The way he'd been reluctant to hit Benji, who was small and skinny and apparently so delicate he couldn't take one punch to the face.

Benji allowed Vanessa to touch his face, wincing a little as he hand came too close to the soft delicate skin that was still aching there. She was so kind, he couldn't help but think he didn't deserve this kindness. He wasn't about to pull away though.

"No. No emergency room. I don't have insurance and my mom doesn't need that kind of debt added to what we already owe. Besides, they'd want to pop it out." As much as he wanted to just get the sucker out of his head already... He couldn't afford it. Plus when it wasn't being an achy mother ********, it was kinda cool.

His head turned at the sound of the punch even though it was still held by Vanessa and he sighed. He was in the wrong and he even felt it now.

"Johnny, hey... Look man, I'm sorry... I should have said I didn't know how to box. I street fight. And... Man, s**t, I didn't KNOW I would have been triggered by some ******** PTSD bullshit. If I did, I would have said something. Don't be such a pick, okay?" Why he heck did he have to feel bad about this?

John Jr was not quick to pause, or to listen to Benji. He was angry too. Angry at Benji for being a ******** cry baby. Angry at Vanessa for wasting his time with training when he was already a warrior. He could feel it in his veins as sure as he knew that Benji couldn't take another fist to his face without going nuts.

The bag rattled on its chain under the force of his strikes.

'Look man, I'm sorry... I should have said I didn't know how to box. I street fight.'

A lie, likely. A real street fighter wouldn't lose his s**t over a bloody eye.

John Jr did not care how much it hurt- not right then. Not when he could have been taking out real fighters. Real people who did things worse than tell lies.

Man, s**t, I didn't KNOW I would have been triggered by some ******** PTSD bullshit. If I did, I would have said something. Don't be such a pick, okay?

The last made him stop.

He looked at Benji, wondered why he was still talking.

"That was a lame apology." He was not sorry. "You came here to spar. Did you think I wouldn't hit you back?"

John Jr rolled his shoulders. Stood tall and proud, studying Benji with a critical eye. He knew that size was not a precise measurement for power, in the world of the senshi- as John Jr arm-wrestling Vanessa he won every time, but as Syrtis he could only strive to keep pace with Vulcan. Benji was tiny, though. John Jr knew which of them had the advantage. On those grounds he could forgive Benji, if only a little.

"All right," he said, holding out his hand for Benji to shake, "We're cool, man. I should never agreed to this anyway. I'm way bigger than you."

"You're face is a lame apology..." Benji couldn't help but mutter under his breath still, fussing with the eye still. It was getting worse, he could tell, and the throbbing that came from it just made him dizzier and dizzer. Though he knew he couldn't see through it, he opened it wide, making sure it was focused on John Jr. He wanted the a*****e to see how gross and bloody it was, how horribly jacked up it showed now that blood was beginning to seep out of the cornea. It wasn't as simple as bleeding tear ducts, it was actual trauma to his eye. And yes, he wanted so badly to gross his opponent out. Because ******** him.

"Maybe I should be thanking you. Maybe if this is as ******** up as I think it is, my mom will finally let me pop the ******** thing out with a spoon or something. get rid of it once and for all." After a moment he closed the gross eye again before looking at the hand offered to him. Part of him REALLY wanted to take his hand and wipe blood all over it in some rude gesture but... Even that was a bit too much for him. Instead he pulled the gloves off of his hands and took John's in his own, but using it instead to pull him down to the ground where he was at.

"The only thing bigger is your ego!"

It wasn't the fact of the damaged eye that disturbed John Jr, but the way that Benji leered at him-- as though John Jr couldn't already see how ******** up it was. He's so weird. Whatever sympathy he might have felt for Benji was killed by Benji's own apparent enjoyment of the wound. He had not done that to Benji's face and, while it was clear that it pained, it was also clear that Benji liked showing it off.

"It looks like your mom should have taken you to the hospital and had it removed a long a** time ago," he said, and was a heartbeat away from returning to his punching bag when Benji finally took him by the hand. His eyebrows flew up into his hairline.

He resisted Benji's pull by dropping all of his weight onto his heels. Tried to tug his hand out of the smaller boy's grip.

"Benji," he said, voice strained, "let go."

He shook his arm. Felt like a pitbull trying to fend off a chihuahua.

Why does he do this? He is tiny and his face is broken. He can not take a punch. He cannot win.

Benji didn't have a clear cut answer as to why he did what he did. His head was hurting like crazy, and everything he did seemed to contradict himself. One moment he felt excited and eager to fight, the next he felt as if the world was crumbling around him, like there was this unspeakable horror that he had to face. As much as he liked to try to imagine himself as someone who was tough enough to deal with anything that came at him, deep down, he was no less scared than anyone else.

For a brief moment, he silently thanked that this had happened before he was out on patrol again, that this weird rolling around in an old rink had been his safe haven. Maybe powered up, he'd have more strength to fight off the pain and keep on trucking. For now, he found a bit of solid ground and used John's shaking arm in order to pull himself up to his full height, still not enough to meet John eye level, but there wasn't a need to. There wasn't a need to do anything, for in this moment, Benji felt drained. He let go of John's hand and moved to leave the ring, his hand stubbornly moving to wipe away the blood that still seemed to be leaving his eye.

"Thanks for letting me practice, Vanessa. Sorry about the blood. Should I give you some money for the cleaning? Does anything need to be cleaned? s**t..."

"Oh, no, absolutely not," Vanessa said, looking at Benji as though he were a little bit crazy, but for entirely different reasons than her brother had. She was concerned, long face turning with compassion for him, and would not hear of him paying for anything.

Cleaning was a different matter, however. A part of discipline and training as much as sparring was. On another day she might have insisted that both boys get to work wiping their sweat from the floor. Today- she was worried about Benji's eye.

She turned towards Benji, reached for his face with ginger fingers. She was careful not to touch him near his eye, gripping his chin and the back of his head instead, tilting him towards her so she could get a better look.

"Have you been to the doctor for this?" She asked, voice soft.

Benji wasn't sure at all how to react to Vanessa's concern, suddenly feeling rather embarrassed and shy under her gaze. It made him think a bit about how his own mother used to act when he first started getting hurt alot more. Confusion, worry, hurt, he could see it on her face, and it bothered him because he hated making people feel that way. Especially people he actually worried for.

"Yeah, a while back..." He finally muttered, letting her take a good look at the eye, which had bled for a little while, then finally seemed to stop again. It wasn't so much new injury that had caused him to bleed, but more of the old one just coming open a little bit. And ******** it hurt!

"I don't want to worry about it. I haven't been able to see out of it for a long time, so it's fine. Hurts like a ******** but it's fine otherwise... I got mad, I guess, because I thought he'd have a little more, I dunno, awareness of it? Like 'oh, his eye is ******** up, how about a little more planned actions so I don't hit it.' Guess that was hoping for too much out of him." Benji's voice was soft and low, only really wanting Vanessa to hear him. John didn't need to know how he felt or thought of things, he was just another shitty a*****e anyway, so why would he even care?

"I'll go to the doctor again soon, once my mother's insurance works out properly. She's supposed to be getting it changed soon... Maybe then they can figure something out."

"John Jr would apologize if he'd thought he'd done something wrong," Vanessa said. Her tone was neither soft nor scolding. She said it like it was a fact, and it was- John Jr could be a pigheaded, thoughtless boy, but he wasn't cruel on purpose. Benji had said nothing of his injured eye until after the hit landed, and then lost his s**t like a wounded cat.

Now there was this news that he could not even see out of it. Vanessa stared.

"It was irresponsible of you not to tell me these things before. He could have really hurt you."

A pause.

"Your real enemies will not hold back. They will use your pain and your anger against you."

Did she know somebody who could remove it for him, without insurance or having to worry about money? It seemed ridiculous there were no doctors willing to help out a hero in need simply for being one of the good guys.

"I can take you to the hospital right now," she said, stooping to collect a bag from the floor. I have some money. I can pay.

At this point, irritation was already bubbling up in his belly, climbing up higher and higher as he was scolded more.

He KNEW what had happened was his own fault, and he KNEW that he should have said something, despite how he looked, he wasn't nearly as stupid as they took him for.

"I said I'm ******** fine!" Benji finally snapped, snatching himself away from Vanessa' grip and heading back to where his stuff was. It certainly hurt a bit that Van wasn't on his side as much as he thought, but what did it matter anyway? Blood is thicker than water and all that. atleast shared blood and not the blood on the ground.

"I don't NEED to go to the hospital. ********, this was a bad idea, I shouldn't have come..." muttering to himself, he began to shove things into his bag, slipping the worn hoodie he had arrived in over his head before slinging the bag over his shoulders.

"I'm heading home, I'll be fine, so you can stop thinking so much about it." A huge part of him wanted to tell Van to ******** off, but he gave all he had to keep from doing so. After all, you didn't tell people you admire to ******** off when they were concerned about something, even if it felt as trivial as he felt it was now.
