"Alright." Lex sneered a bit, letting Oliver close the gap he kept for firing distance. "You want me to swing?" He flicked the safety on, twirling the pistol around his index finger, before gripping the barrel firmly and clubbing Oliver with the firearm. "Then let's dance, Oliver."

Oliver squeaked loudly as the weapon struck surprisingly hard. "Ow, no! No, we're not dancing!"

All dancing aside, Lex really was too close. The heavy axe had an optimal striking distance. Too far away was a miss, but being too close shortened the swing and avoided the hardest blow. Oliver's grip shifted slightly, and with a familiar hiss and a click the blades slid downward on the haft of the axe, transforming into one long edge. Much better for slicing at close range.

The sudden and sharp upward slice threw Lex's next attempt at a pistol-whip off, the butt of the gun barely grazing Oliver before Lex sidestepped and made space between himself and the boy.

< You can end this, whelp. You should end this. >

Lex continued to ignore Regal for the time being. The softer approach would work, he told the beast. Just shut up and let him do his thing.

Oliver tried to retaliate too fast, rather than waiting and assessing his opponent's next movement he swung right away, barely clipping Lex's shield as he dodged. The kid knew he had made a mistake the moment it happened, a slightly cross expression flickered across his face as he mentally chided himself. He was getting tired, and getting sloppy.

The rumbling voice spoke up in his mind, adding balance to the harsh self-criticism.

As Regal grew louder, Lex's accuracy diminished with his concentration. He was tired, both from the fight and the mental berating. Lex's shots barely nicked the boy's shield, bursts of light barely grazing his shoulders.

"Thats's not how this works." Lex muttered darkly, keeping an arm's length between himself and Oliver. Oliver wasn't a weak rabbit, just a young cub in need. Lex couldn't help Stormy, or Ami, nor Maebe. But, Christ, he was going to help Oliver.

Oliver might have been a weak rabbit, despite the giant axe. But at least rabbits were granted the same desire for survival as their predators.

Dodging at close range was difficult, but when he took the time to plan his swings instead of just wildly retaliating he was at least able to do some damage to his opponent's shield. He noticed more, too. Lex had an almost grim expression on his face, was he starting to tire as well?

Had he been aware of Lex's thoughts, he might have interpreted it as disappointment. Oliver was not comfortable being someone's pet project, not because he thought he could take care of himself, but because he didn't want to put such a large burden on the people he cared about. If he knew someone was watching his progress, putting their own time and energy into his improvement, he would have begun to doubt himself even more than usual.

Lex's aim continued dwindling, the next shot hardly grazing Oliver's fingers. The shield was weak, Lex's own resolve was weak. But it was there, and that was what mattered.

"Oliver." The older man hissed, brows knitting. "I know you've had to have built up a charge, by now. Unleash it - remember, I'm a demon, out to kill you and your team." It was an easy roll to slip into, and Oliver's doppelganger reflection almost made it too easy to pretend that Lex was talking to himself, as well. "Are you just going to let me win? Could you go home knowing you didn't do everything you possibly could to prevent a loss? Could you live with that guilt?"

Rather than switch hands again, Oliver clenched his fingers tighter around the axe handle. "And what do I do if a demon... is trying to goad me into a particular action?" He asked between breaths, starting to feel the weight of the weapon as a tightness in his shoulders.

He stepped forward again for a heavy vertical slash, trying to knock Lex's aim off, and drive the muzzle of the pistol downwards. Although he couldn't bring himself to say it, returning home after a deadly encounter was probably the least of his worries.

While Oliver's swing did throw off Lex's aim, the pistol's muzzle firing into the dirt- the tactically correct move had stooped Lex to the perfect height for a tackle, the man's momentum carrying Oliver and himself on to the floor. Lex's lanky knees dug into Oliver's elbows, and Regal rested under Oliver's chin.

"Then you asses the situation, look at your options, and choose correctly." Lex continued to lecture, driving his weight further into the boy's sockets. "You did what you could; but you weren't fast enough. Your brain's got the speed, Oliver - now get your body to match it." Lex closed his lecture, smacking Oliver across the chin with the Regal's bronzed muzzle.

Oliver yelped as Lex charged into him, and his mightiest struggles were not enough to shake the older man off. The strike from the gun was the last blow his fragile shield needed, if it weren't for the protective wards he knew he would have been vulnerable. Jökul dissipated, returning to the tooth pendant around his neck.

The kid went limp, knowing the fight was over. "You are overestimating me," Oliver protested, "both my brain and my body. I'm just not very good at fighting."

"No, Oliver. You just underestimate yourself too much." Lex's stern tone was offset with a bright smile as he dismounted Oliver, Regal returning to a ballpoint pin lodged in his shirt pocket. "If you keep doubting yourself, you'll keep losing - and one of these days, it won't be on the sparring grounds."

Lex pulled his arms through his cost sleeves, buttoning the garment and adjusting his sleeves, then his scarf, rustled his hair. "You're not gonna go out like that, buddy. Not on my watch."

Oliver sat up, rubbing his face in a very tired gesture. "I've already lost plenty of times off the training field too. I'm sure one day there won't be anyone around to save me..."

He sighed and got to his feet, rubbing his chin where the final blow had landed. "I think the doubt is just a part of me, I can't shake it off that easily."

"Of course it won't be easy." Lex snorted, looking Oliver in the eyes, expression softening from the stern, lecturing steel he'd worn during their fight. "Necessary things are hardly ever easy - or painless."

Like the separation anxiety he drank away every night. The knowledge that being apart was so much more worse, painful to a degree Lex wouldn't have imagined before, than living what he'd called a 'droll' existence.

"Just don't let the pain take you down, kid."

When Oliver was less anxious, less on edge about the island's unpredictable challenges and less worried about appearing weak in front of his company, that eye contact was not a difficult thing. Lex probably knew the measure of his weaknesses even better than his close friends did, emphasizing the need to get stronger just as much as praising existing merits.

"I'm still here, aren't I?" Oliver replied with an honest smile. There were many emotions there usually hidden away where they wouldn't be noticed, weary acceptance, lingering sadness, the slightest hint of a developing positive outlook, and a large amount of gratitude.
