Cecil Tealy Although much of the jury looked at Sue with suspicion, he didn't seem fazed by Sawyer's rebuttal. In fact, he was smiling. "Evidence can always be brought in at any time. The only factor needed for it to be used in trial is that it's relevant to the case." One hand was on his hip, and the other stretched out leisurely to take a piece of paper and a bag handed to him by Cecil, who had been gone for the beginning of the trial until recently. "Forgive me for not bringing this piece of evidence to light earlier, but I had to make sure my suspicions were correct. And they were." He held the bag up to show a small, silver rectangle. Adam winced. "This is Mr. Baum's lighter. It was found inside the kitchen the night of the fire and several witnesses have reported seeing him with it the same night he had visited. I had it looked at by forensics to show that there was only one set of fingerprints on it: the owner's!" Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦Sawyer seemed unfazed, and for good reason. " You mean like this one?" He reached into his own pocket, pulling out an identical lighter. It undoubtedly had his finger prints on it, but it also had Adam's, who had asked to borrow it only an hour before. " It isn't hard to put someone's fingerprints on a cheap lighter, Mr. Yuu. All you've got to do, is know their habits. Mr. Baum worked for years with the Sorrentino family, I'm sure they knew that he has a smoke break every night at exactly 10:14. I'm sure they also knew just what lighter he owned, given that it was given to him by Mr. Sorrentino himself, who owns several lighters of his own and actually has a bit of a collection, given the insurance check he was given for it." The blonde paused, then gestured to the witness. " Mr. Yuu, unless you want to bring this to a recess, I urge you to continue questioning your witness so I can cross-examine him. After all, it's not very professional to encourage an argument right in the middle of a trial. In fact, it's rather green of you." He moved to sit down, crossing his legs and leaning back. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy "What a bold statement, Mr. Loupohl." grinned Sue as he moved back to his own desk. "Before I finish my questioning, let me ask you one thing: do you have proof?" He smiled while waving a hand towards the defender. "What you have given me is nothing more than words, dear defender. If you think that Mr. Baum's lighter being found at the scene of the crime is nothing but a forgery then I ask for proof. Otherwise all you have done is wasted the valuable time of our jury members." Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦" I will not be antagonized in the middle of a trial, Mr. Yuu. If you have anything to add, you can take me up to the stand." He lifted one finger. " As for the lighter, you have no proof that it isn't a forgery. All you have is a lighter that might not have even been used by my client any more than once. The evidence has been presented, now I must ask you to put it into the evidence table and cease trying to incite an impassioned argument in a court of law." Setting his hand back down, he started forward, nodding to the judge. " Speaking of time being wasted, I contest the lighter as evidence. Evidence can, in fact be brought in in the middle of a court case, but not in the middle of the actual trial, not when my team has had no time to prepare and wasn't warned of its existence. You know better than anyone, Your Honor, how something such as that can drastically alter an otherwise fair case." He pointed a thumb into Sue's direction. " I also contest being called 'dear'. I find it offensive due to my position." He raised an eyebrow, knowing that if he couldn't get the lighter out, he could at least get the prosecutor to refer to him by his name instead of dear. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy "Shall we put your defendant on the stand then?" mused Sue, his chin resting on top of his hand. "I believe he can tell you better than anyone whether that lighter is true or not." Adam looked away from both lawyers. When he heard about the evidence, Sue stretched his leg out to slam it against his desk, striking a pose as he did so. "I'm sorry to say, dear defender, but the police had been working on the lighter before the trial even began. In fact, it was the chief himself that made sure to get it analyzed." he said. After listening to the two, the judge exhaled slowly. "The evidence will stay." he decided then looked at the prosecutor. "But the prosecution will refrain from giving anyone nicknames." He slammed his gavel against his desk. Sue flinched as though he had been slapped. "How absurd." he wheezed then glowered at Sawyer. "My time is up. Go ahead with your cross-examination, de- ... Mr. Loupohl." he hissed with distaste. Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦Sick of all the up and down, Sawyer stood and pushed his hands into his pockets, walking up to the floor. " Mr. Sorrentino, you're not married anymore, are you?" He gestured to the file on his desk. " Divorced three times, got six kids, at least two are in college and the other four live with their mothers. That's a lot of money that you need to provide." He gestured between them. " I get that. I mean, if there's anything I understand, it's an evil ex-wife. I've got two. I guess I got off easier than you." The jury chuckled. " But with your salary, it can't be easy. I mean, isn't that why you got fired from your last job? Weren't you accused of sneaking a little extra cash from the till, or was that all just hearsay?" he asked. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy Carson gave Sue a wary look, who motioned for him to answer. "Yeah..." he answered quietly at first then looked at Sawyer. "But, I mean, could ya blame me? They didn't need all that extra dough and I was hangin' on by a string!" "Mr. Loupohl, what does this have to do with the case?" asked Sue. Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦" Just establishing the character of our witness, Mr. Yuu," answered Sawyer, walking closer to the man. " A hard worker, a family man, just trying to do what's right by his kids. I get it, Mr. Sorrentino. Your kids need to eat, your ex-wives need alimony, and you've still gotta survive. It's not easy, Mr. Sorrentino." He stuck his hands into his pockets, eyes sympathetic. " I know what you're going through. You'd do anything for your kids. You'd steal for them, you'd kill for them." He stood in front of the man, understanding on his handsome face. " You'd lie for them." ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy Carson reeled back in his seat when Sawyer got in front of him, fear on his tight face. "Objection!" burst Sue, much to the man's relief. "Your Honor, what we're getting is baseless assumptions and profiling. Unless the defense plans to do something other than ponder out loud I suggest we end his cross-examination." Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦" I suggest that the prosecution stops mumbling." Sawyer directed his words over his shoulder, eyes remaining on the man in front of him. " Mr. Sorrentino, when the police arrived, the stench of fire wasn't the only thing they inhaled. Somebody had had a lot to drink that night, somebody stank of alcohol. And it certainly wasn't the sixteen year-old girl who called 911." He turned and walked back to get the file, advancing. " How much had you been drinking that night, Mr. Sorrentino? And don't lie, we have eyewitness accounts that say you'd been at a bar just two hours before the fire." ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy Sue's eye twitched. "M-Mumbling...?!" he asked, offended. He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by the judge. "The defense will continue." Sue sagged in his stance and crossed his arms, irritated. By that time Carson was beginning to sweat nervously and tugged at his shirt collar. "... Alright, yeah. So I had a couple drinks during the night. So what? I still wasn't anywhere near that kitchen!" Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦Something sparked in Sawyer's eyes as Carson's outburst registered. He waited a second, watching the stenographer write down the man had said. Spinning to face her, he slowly started to walk over. " You weren't near the kitchen?" he asked. " Well, according to the blueprints of the restaurant, the restroom you tried to go to was down the hall from the kitchen, which is one of the only entrances to that area. Being drunk, you'd only be able to see clearly if you were at the very entrance." He gestured to the woman. " Please read back the witness' testimony." She nodded, going back through it, then clearing her throat. " Alright, so I'm going to use the restroom, right? I get up and I smell something. It's hot and I'm wondering if someone's up late cooking something. Well I'm already up so I might as well get some snack, am I right? Anyway, I head down and I see these huge flames eatin' up the kitchen. I'm talkin' HUGE! I only saw it for a second but I know I saw that little twerp running away!" She sat back down, and Sawyer started walking back towards the witness. " Were you in the kitchen that night or not, Mr. Sorrentino? You already contradicted yourself, so I urge you to think before you speak." ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy "Objection!" Sue's expression was determined, but there was a drop of sweat running down the side of his head. "You're Honor, he made a mistake. He's nervous and his memory can't photograph everything that happened that night when so many things happened at once." He motioned to the jury. "Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you a story. I once had a dog, you see. I loved that dog more than anything in the world. I never focused on where I was or what I did, just that do. Of course, he had an untimely death on my twelfth birthday, but that's besides the point." He lifted his leg and slammed it against the desk. "My point is that Mr. Sorrentino focused on one thing and that very thing happened to be the arsonist!" The judge stared at Sue for a long, silent moment. He then closed his eyes and said, "Objection overruled." The prosecution flinched as though he had been slapped. The judge looked down at the nervous man. "The witness will answer the defense's question." Even Carson looked as though he had been struck. His sweat was practically a waterfall now and darkened his shirt. "O... Okay, so maybe I was there for a second. It doesn't prove anything!" Sue Yuu

Sawyer Loupohl ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦" Every second counts, Mr. Sorrentino. You were very drunk, it was flaming inside the kitchen, and in that one second you were in that kitchen, you took great note of a single, slight frame? Isn't it possible that you confused something else for Mr. Baum, who you have probably only met once or twice?" He gestured towards his client. " Mr. Baum, please stand." He took note of his height. " He can't be more than 5'10, an average height. In fact, isn't that the same height as your son?" He took two steps closer to the stand. Sawyer looked over to the jury. " Ladies and gentleman of the esteemed jury, I'm not going to try and win you over with anecdotes about my dead childhood pet. I am here to present you with the facts and try to redeem the lost future of a former juvenile delinquent who worked incredibly hard to get where he was and attempt to create a future for himself before his potential was ripped away from him by a family who hasn't seen him in four years." He turned, pointing to Carson. " Did you or did you not remain in the kitchen long enough to see who set the fire without a shadow of a doubt, Mr. Sorrentino?" ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Cecil Tealy Carson bit his lip and looked around. He felt like everyone was staring at him with twice as many eyes. The judge's stand felt ten times higher than it normally was. It was hard to breathe. The entire world was staring at him right now, listening to his heavy breaths with quiet anticipation. The burden of it all, it was too much. He grabbed his head and cried out in defeat. When he was done wailing he sagged in his stance, defeated and crestfallen. "... Yes." he finally admitted. "I saw who did it." He closed his eyes as guilt took over his expression. "My son, he always wanted to be a chef. One of them culinary art kinda deals. This restaurant was his gateway, but every time he tried to cook something it... well, it was crap. Eventually my bro had to fire him. He kept trying, though, wanting to prove 'em wrong. "I went to the bathroom when the fire started. I was buzzed, but my sight wasn't that bad. At first I didn't recognize who it was that ran away, but then..." He smiled bitterly. "I saw a pot on the stove with bourbon on it. The fire must've caught on the grease, I don't know, but the only person I've ever seen try to cook with that as an ingredient..." Sue stood, his face tense and surprised as he listened to the confession. He had a sinking feeling in his stomach, and in that instance he wished he had been the dog of his tale instead. Sue Yuu
