Hvergelmir listened with interest and no small amount of concern to the story that Ida was telling her. It was alarming, not just in what she said, but in the way she told it -- and though Hvergelmir tried to think only of the positive aspects of it, of how proud she was of Ida for being open and honest about her reactions even though they weren't flattering, it was hard not to dwell on the substance of the reactions Ida had had, too. 'I remember... seeing it done to a criminal, and... feeling justified at her pain.'

It worried her, sometimes, how different the two of them could be. How many things Ida seemed to need to feel were justified just to get through the day, no matter how much her conscience fought her on it afterwards. However hard she tried, however much she gave of herself, the fact remained: Ida was not coping with the war well.

"Carnivorous plants are rare," she said, only stating the obvious, "but their behaviors, if you can call them that, are for nourishment. But if you allowed them to flourish here in the past -- in a hospital, no less -- there must have been some degree of mutual benefit. Something useful in them. We just have to figure out what your vine needs."

The answer Hver came up with was so simple, and should have been so obvious, that Ida was taken aback for a moment, her shoulders dropping.

Carnivorous plants. It would explain why they had attacked her, and it was as innocent as seeking nourishment. There was nothing sinister about that and it spoke clearly about how much she had allowed herself to get upset over something new on her unchanging planet. She'd let fear of change cloud her judgement and in light of that, she had to wonder if it was just this she was over reacting about.

Maybe the death of that section of her planet was... natural. For all she knew, it could be a cycle of refreshment it all went through, every so often. Maybe she was wrong to fight it...

"You're right. I... she wouldn't have let them in here if they weren't serving a function. I'm letting my imagination run away with me, I think." Her lips curve upwards and she offered her friend a squeeze of the hand. This room would not offer them any more information than she already had, but... there were other rooms. She even knew one that was as much the heart of this place as this one was, but in light of that revelation, she wondered now if she were making things a bigger deal than they needed to be.

"Maybe we should take a break." The young woman said as she turned away from the common space, turning to look over the cosmos knight at her side. "I did sort of drag you all over the place already. We can keep looking around later, or whenever you'd like to."

Hver had been so sweet, taking her concerns seriously and being game to go wandering all over the small asteroid if it made Ida feel better. She was a good friend, and deserved to see more of Ida than the damaged bits she'd been getting lately. She deserved someone stronger.

"There are some food supplies stored here we could break open for an impromptu meal, or I could take you home, depending on what you like better or if you wanted to stay longer. And thank you, for coming in the first place. It means a lot to me."

Hvergelmir shook her head easily in dismissal of Ida's concerns. She smiled. "I'm here to help," she said easily.

She didn't press the issue of Ida's reaction -- it seemed at least somewhat clear. Ida was unaccustomed to imposing on others; this wasn't the first time she'd made a request and then tried to walk it back, feeling like she shouldn't ask anything for herself. Pressing that issue directly was unlikely to yield results -- in Hvergelmir's experience, Ida took anyone challenging her as a sign of her own failure, her own imperfection. Perhaps someday there would come a time when she'd open up enough, learn to trust enough, that she didn't shut down dialogues by using them as weapons against herself . . . but not today. Not soon.

So instead, Hvergelmir did what she thought was the best thing for the situation: she radiated what she could of calm reassurance. She made it evident that there was no need to hurry, no impatience to be catered to. She took the situation and did what she could to slow it down.

That was what she imagined Ida needed in asking for help, most of all: someone to tell her that everything would be okay. Someone to slow her swirling fear. Hvergelmir could do that.

"Let's have something to eat," she agreed. "I could stand to unwind -- enjoy being away from Earth for a while." And so could you, she thought.

Hver was, as ever, a calming influence. She just... accepted, whatever Ida's current insecurity was at the time. She didn't seem to judge, and that went a long way.

Ida might feel like an idiot for bringing her friend here to watch her panic over maybe nothing, but Hver simply smiled and held her hand through it all. It helped, quite a lot.

The purple senshi linked her arm in the pale knight's and intertwined their fingers before she guided her away from the open room with its flowers. The mystery of what was going on would have to wait a little while, at least until they'd had a chance to rest and regroup a little. Get some perspective.

Things would look better then.
