"Sure!" She agreed. "Lakes are good, too. Cold water and fishies in your toes. We lived near a lake, but I wasn't actually supposed to go near it. My aunt and uncle were very worried I would drown." And from what little Micah knew about her, it would be easy to guess that her aunt and uncle had the right idea.

When his scowl disappeared, Sunday got a glimpse of his face, and then looked again a second later. She could see what Micah might have looked like when the days were brighter, and full of life. She, in her unending failure to understand the rules of adulthood and personal space, reached up and pressed her hand all the way down his relaxed face.

"This is normal." She told him, as if she was speaking of her touch - but she was speaking of that expression that she was sure he did not give very often, anymore. It was an expression she welcomed, because it aided her in her imaginative trip to Mexico with him. She pulled her hand away, and grinned. "We will be normal. We'll go down to where people don't speak english anymore, and keep walking until we find the ocean again." Her lips pursed thoughtfully. "Or a lake. Whatever's closest."

"Cold water's good to swim in anyway," Micah said, a little gruffly. "You ever go fishing?" Probably not, since she'd said she wasn't supposed to go near the lake, and he could see why they'd told her that, the way she kept wandering off. She wasn't all there really, but she was sweet, and he kind of liked her.

The hand on his face made him startle, but he didn't yell, and the scowl didn't return yet. It was like the rules were suspended, temporarily, in this foggy quiet outdoor space. "A lake's probably closest," he said. "But maybe not. Gotta check and find out, right?"

She gave him a far too bright thumbs up. "Right! We're going to check!" And they were off, on a journey that - if it ever had the ability to come true - would take her far away from everything she owned, everyone she knew, and into a whole new wilderness. In theory, she loved the idea. In reality, it terrified her beyond belief. Micah only saw the joy, however; because the first step was always the most exciting.

"I've never gone fishing. But I've eaten fish. So we won't starve, out there on our own." And then her expression sobered.

"Wait.." She did not stop walking, clutching his arm with both of her arms now, as she thought with much difficulty about what they were about to do. It looked like she was about to come to grips with reality, but she wasn't.

She whispered a very serious, "What if we find a river."

"I can fish," Micah said, very seriously. "So that's all right." He knew perfectly well that this was not really going to happen, but for this little while, he could play along and pretend that they were going to walk out of the city and down to Mexico and have a nice, sunny, relaxing vacation, because why the hell not? There was no harm in it, and he was pretty sure she'd forget the plan before she actually decided to do it.

Or think of an obstacle. That might happen too. "We'll need to get a rubber raft to cross the river," he offered.

"A rubber.." Sunday gasped, and her skin blanched with horror. "Where are we going to find a rubber raft. What kind of - we need to find one of those sports stores, don't we? Or outdoorsy stores.. have you seen any nearby?"

In all of her travel, she hadn't seen one - but in truth, she hadn't actually looked too hard into the windows of the buildings around her. She was sure she would see things she would regret. Now she looked around, and saw nothing that looked outdoors related.

"Come on." She let go of his arm, and grasped his hand in a firm grip as she started running down to a street that looked more store-occupied. "We need supplies. That's where we'll get them, one of those - " She gasped again, and tugged him hard. "Look! Look! That one!"

The store was huge, and it was called 'Bass Pro Outdoor Shop', which looked less looted than others.. likely because there was less a dying person might need there. Her hand slipped helplessly out of his as she started to run without thinking, into the shop. In all of her imaginative normal time, it became easy to forget how important it was to look before leaping.

A little bemused by her exaggerated horror, Micah let himself be hauled along. A little part of him was pleased and gratified that he didn't have to stretch his legs to keep up, as he sometimes did with taller people. This area of the city had been explored and looted and destroyed, since there were a lot of stores; windows were broken out, and trash still littered the sidewalks and streets, with nobody to pick it up.

The Bass Pro shop had probably been picked over for camping materials, but Micah would have put money on it that there were still rafts and fishing supplies left. Sunday let go of his hand and started to run ahead. "Sunday, hey, don't leave me behind," he called, and jogged after her.

She had disappeared inside, but by the time he reached the door, he might have been able to see her hiding by the frame, waiting as if she was well hidden in order to pop out and surprise him. Of course, she relented once she realized what a terrible joke that was, so instead she waited until he arrived at the door, and hopped in front of him quietly.

"I won't leave you behind." She promised, which was one of those rare promises Sunday intended to keep. She was the one always left behind - in no world was Sunday ever going to purposefully leave someone who wanted to be around her, alone. Micah would have to get rid of her, before that could happen.

"Come on!" She grabbed his arm again, and started picking her way through the store. There was glass all over the floor, and no light inside to see from, but Sunday glowed purple from her glowstick and everything around them took on that soft, violet haze. There were so many shadows and corners that promised the possibility of danger, and this ruined Sunday's ability to imagine herself in a normal world, once more.

She backed up, until she felt Micah on her back, and her hands shook gently. She'd completely forgotten why they were inside the building; or what they'd intended to do together. All she remembered was danger, and darkness, and death.

Micah jumped a little anyway, opened his mouth to snap at her, then closed it again as she made her promise. "Okay," he said instead, feeling a weird combination of pleased and sad. He didn't quite know why that made his chest ache a little; it just did.

He hooked his arm into hers and started into the store, looking around to see where the fishing section was. The blue glow of his glowstick blended with her purple. "Over there," he started, and lifted his free hand to point; then her back bumped against him, and he looked across to see that her eyes were wide and her hands were shaking, and that pretending that they were going on a vacation had come to a very sudden end. "Hey," he said helplessly. "Hey ... "

He didn't quite know what to do. He'd never been really good at talking to girls, or anyone really. He put his arm around her shoulder, carefully, trying to be comforting.

The sound of his voice was an anchor, but she was still hovering with dread, and he wasn't quite snapping her out of it. Her breath came in two short gasps when she thought she saw a shadow skittering nearby, and she turned around quickly to slam her face into his chest. If she couldn't look, she would forget. If she couldn't see everything that reminded her of what the world had come to, she could find her happy place again.

"Normal." She whispered out; a choppy reminder of how they'd described it. "Rivers. Lakes. Ocean. Boats." With each word, she was convincing herself that the only reality worth thinking about was one that included all their hastily made plans. "Okay." She whispered, not quite convinced, but trying. "Okay."

She lifted her head, and turned to look down an aisle. "Let's find a boat."

Micah held Sunday, but lightly, afraid that if he hugged her too tight she'd feel trapped. He didn't know quite what was happening, but it scared him a little, and so he scowled ferociously at the shadowy corners. If there was anything there, he would fight it, dammit.

"Okay," he repeated after her, still confused but willing to go with it. She'd apparently managed to recover some of her composure, and vacation time was back on. That was okay. "Yeah. Down here."

She turned in the direction he was indicating, and slowly started to walk down it. It was made more difficult by the fact that she was clutching his arm with the force of a thousand suns by this point, and refused to walk a step in front, or behind him. She wanted to stay right by his side, and no more or less. This was safest.

"Oooh, look!" The pressure on his arm dropped and every ounce of fear bled from her in an instant when she saw an actual box on a shelf, advertising a giant yellow boat with oars and all sorts of safety and luxury features. It even had a tiny placeholder for a cooler!

"I want this one!" She reached up to try and get it, and could not reach. Even on her tiptoes, she bounced and bounced, trying to reach it - and failed, miserably.

Micah winced a little at the pressure on his arm, but bore it as stoically as he could. He wasn't about to admit that it hurt at all, partly because his pride wouldn't take that, and partly because Sunday was pretty scared.

Then she spotted a boat, and her grip dropped very suddenly as she jumped to reach it. He was only a couple of inches taller, and he wasn't going to be able to reach it either. His scowl deepened, but he refused to climb shelves or jump for it. Instead he went to one knee and made a cup with his hands for her to put a foot in. "I'll boost you," he grumbled.

When he disappeared, it caught her attention. She stopped hopping to check on him, and then her head dropped when she saw what he was doing. It took her a second, but she figured it out, and slid her foot into the hook his hands made.

"Okay, here I go! First try!" She announced, hopping up into the air with his boost and moving the box halfway out. This did not actually get it to fall, nor did she have it in her hands when she came back down stumbling with very little balance, but it was a start.

It just wasn't first try.

She hopped up again, moved it a little more, and came tumbling down noisily. A third time, she managed to dislodge it enough to make it tip, and when it threatened to fall she grabbed Micah and pulled him out of the way, hard. It fell to the floor, and she threw her hands up in celebration.

"First try!"
