"That's what I get for trying to trust the school slut to be interested in something other than screwing."
Lina slapped his arm and actually glared, not that either phased him. "Hey. Don't call her that."
"She wear it like a crown, why not? But I'm get in trouble if there's no change," Jack continued to complain as they walked to the bus. "I'm just gonna tell them she's not interested anymore, 'cause I'm sure as hell not."
Lina frowned to herself. "Is she having trouble anywhere else?"
Jack shrugged and asked, "Why?" Beat. "No."
"Why not?"
"Because it's not gonna work, obviously."
"For a smart guy, you give in really easily," she said airily as the bus arrived.

"Mind if I sit with you?"
(Today's lunch: beefaroni (or what passed for it), salad, and everyone's favorite: cornbread.)

"Don't- Doesn't have my name on it," she said suspiciously. Chel was dumb but she wasn't that dumb. Jack wouldn't bow his mighty head so his b***h was doing it for him. At least the other boys at her table were staring just as much. It helped with the status quo enforcement.
She wasn't about to be played. "So like is his d**k really that bomb? Or you one of those shy virgin types?" She took a bite of her cornsponge. Your move, Lina.

An Attempt
Well, too late now. She took a seat and tried not to look intimidated by all those eyes. In the distance she saw her best friend giving her a strange look from afar.
"Um..." That was some sort of question. "Neither?" That was an okay answer, she hoped. "Oh, sorry, my name's Lina!" she added hastily before she forgot. "We have English together, if you were wondering."

"Never asked your name. I knew what it was." Chel was sharper this time around.
"Seriously though, what's he got you here for?" She pushed imaginary Jack bangs out of her face and began a bad imitation. "Boo hoo I ain-" She paused for a moment, mentally stuttering. "I'm Jack, my rep's more important than anything."
A few people at the table laughed. Chel stuck a tuft of cornbread in her face. "You tell him he's gotta bribe me, aight?"

Lina couldn't help but chuckle a little herself at the impression. "He didn't send me," she said to the piece of cornbread. "Although I guess, yeah, it kinda looks like that, huh...No, uh," she chuckled again, maybe the nerves acting up, "he'd be mad if I meddled with that. I'm actually here about the project they're making us do in English, the literature lives one."
Every year, each grade was given a theme for that particular project in place of a midterm, due just before the winter break. Taking something that was read in class, each student was required to do a ten minute presentation on a specific aspect of the work, usually through a re-enactment or re-visualization.
"I was wondering if you wanted a partner?"

"Nope," she said. "Already workin' with Lizzy here," she chirped happily, shooting the girl a wink before turning back to Lina. "So looks like you came here for nothing."
Chel was not a force you could befriend with kindness.

Lina looked delighted rather than deflated. "Lizzy Casimir, right? She's really good at this sort of stuff, she did this neat collage back in elementary...A-Anyway, what're you guys thinking you'll do for the project? I'm kinda still lost on ideas..."

"So, how bad did you do?" he asked as they got their tests back, because of course he did. Of course he wanted to see just how bad Chel had sucked without his help. Of course.

The F in Effort
Chel picked up the paper and held it close to her chest, hiding the test under her sleeves. She gave him an upturned snarl, a cornered dog with its leg caught in the trap.
She evaluated her options and finally sighed, flipping over her paper.
A bright red F, the usual, sat at the top. The letter to top off all the mispelled words, blank spaces and drawings of skulls. It wasn't like she'd been trying or anything. Just the same old same old.
Then the teacher called her name, and she got up to perform the routine walk of shame to the desk of doom (she left the test on her desk if Jack wanted to peruse; she'd come back for it later). A short conversation ensued if Jack wanted to listen as well; the usual suspects of bored "yes I did my best" and "Chel I'm concerned-" and "Sorry, I'll try better."
But this particular teacher was a hardass and said something low and harsh, something that actually made Chel's face twitch into the same snarl she'd given Jack. "Whatever," was said very apathetically, and she marched back to her desk, grabbed her bag in a fit of annoyance and snatched the paper from either Jack's hands or the desks (wherever it had ended up).

The F in Effort
His smirk lessened as the teacher piled on more s**t (being respectful was one thing, but the dichotomy of teacher and student would always make it something of an us versus them), but he chose to pursue the topic anyway. "Yeah, he is. I'm still free on Tuesdays."

Chel just about slammed him into the locker then.
-you'll end up like one of those trailer trash dead ends that-
"I'm not going to the tutoring center," she said stubbornly.
It wasn't no.

Stunned by the motion for a moment, he then pushed her back as a knee jerk reaction and fixed his coat. "There's study rooms in the library."

The F in Effort
Chel could see Chris over Jack's shoulder, waiting to drive her home in his very official beat up family car. He was 16, so he could drive. Technically he wasn't supposed to drive others, but like they had ever followed the rules. Chris tightened at the sight of Chel being pushed, but Chel gave him a wave. Don't worry about this one, I've got it if it comes to that.
"I'm not doin' it at school," she said with a tight line for lips. "And you're not coming to my house. So that leaves your house or somewhere else." Stubborn until the end: "Or we can just call this off and I can fail in peace."
