Namie frowned. She listened to Manny and considered what he said about types. She tilted her head.
The talk of his uniform caused the man to flinch and he smiled uncomfortably. "Not demoted, actually. Would have been nice if it were just that." Several seconds passed. He scratched at the cover of a book shyly, like a scolded child scuffing their shoe on the ground.
"Way to make a color sound ominous, Izaya." Adam attempt to laugh, but it sounded forced, "So uh... Mind telling me what it means to be Maroon? Other than you're going to have a hell of a time matching it to your wardrobe?"

"Ominous?" the informant repeated, appearing to be very interested in the books at hand. "'Ominous' would be calling it the color of blood. As for what it means, you've worn it before. Manny considered the suggestion, but couldn't imagine Adam agreeing or Izaya agreeing to such a thing, Perking, he grinned at Namie broadly Gleefully he grabbed more books and set them up onto the shelves,
"Yeah, I remember wearing that itchy son of a b***h. Sure as anyone on this base recalls wearing it," Adam pointed out, giving up on filing for a moment to lean against the shelf and turn sideways, to properly watch Izaya, "But as far as I remember, you were a grunt, and trainee is below grunt. You're telling me that's not a demotion... So what is this, then? Suddenly nostalgic for the days running laps and scrubbing latrines?"

Namie nodded curtly and picked up more books using Psychic. She hesitated a minute as she considered Manny's question. Her brow furrowed. Looking back at the Haunter, she asked,
Izaya gave Adam a measured stare before taking a quick look around to make sure no one else was watching.

Chuckling, Manny slipped another book onto the shelf,
Really, Adam didn't know what the hell Izaya was going to do when he stared like that. "Wh - hey!" Harshly he whispered as his uniform was grabbed and pulled. At first the grunt considered fighting back, but really what was the worst that could happen? Izaya punch him? Oh no.
At the end of the shelf, he frowned at the shorter man and whispered harshly, "The ******** is up, man?"

Namie smiled a little at that. Izaya's sudden order caused her smile to disappear, though, and she looked back at Manny quizically.
Shoving the grunt against the end of the shelf, Izaya used enough force to knock over the books they had placed there. Namie winced and immediately attempted to right them again with Psychic.
"It's been clear from the start that you don't know what's good for you, so let me tell you now," Izaya hissed. "You're already in way over your head. I'm a non-Trainee wearing a Trainee uniform because there's no uniform for 'traitor'. Neither is there one for 'human experiment', but it's the only way traitors seem to be allowed to walk around here still breathing. Well the shove was very uncalled for. Adam's anger flared, internal hackles rising as he prepared to verbally lash out at the trainee-not-trainee. However, Izaya's words stayed his anger. His lips were pressed thin and white as his eyes danced across Izaya's face for some que. Was this real emotion, real anger, or an attempt to throw Adam off from the truth? Why would Iza risk losing his control so easily? Why the hell was he so - Adam understood, in more way than one. Fear. Really, the "traitor" (Adam instantly loathed the usage of that word towards his ex-roommate) didn't deserve the act of sympathy that Adam would bestow, but that didn't stop the blonde. Sympathy was a strong emotion, especially when it came to someone you... Well... Adam touched the hand that was bunched tightly into his uniform. It wasn't rough. It wasn't grabbing. It was a gentle resting touch. Softly, as if the words might break the terrified traitor, he spoke, "I'm sorry. I had no idea, honestly. I won't go poking around. Izaya grit his teeth and yanked his hand away as if Adam's were made of acid. His gaze was harder than ever. "You still have no idea. Adam raised an eyebrow, "I really don't get what talking to you has to do with this, or being friends. As long as I don't act like a traitor, then there's not an issue." He shrugged, "Besides, considering how I acted to you BEFORE, and they still haven't suspected or treated me as a traitor, then I very much doubt it'd matter now. Of course, bringing Akira into this was a low blow. Adam wasn't even surprised. Rolling his eyes, he grabbed some of the books and started to put them on the shelf, "S'funny to me, that you're saying all this. Because to anyone who doesn't know you, it'd be pretty out of character." Adam slid books back onto the shelf, his voice a soft whisper that only Izaya could hear, "Telling me to stay away, that I'm being careless and could get hurt. Izaya halted where he was. He flexed his hands slowly and exhaled through his nose. "You already know I've been telling you this from the start. You didn't listen. I'm not saying this to 'anyone who doesn't know me', I'm saying this to you. Don't misinterpert things again. It still all leads back to me taking measures to protect myself. I'm just reminding you of your own, more-likely motivations in the case my best interests aren't enough."
He scowled. "You don't have the luxury to make any assumptions any more. Not about me or this organization. Adam responded blandly, "So why would you bother fooling around when you have you own life to concern yourself with? I'd guess because you're afraid, and very lonely." He let the words hang in the air for a moment before continuing, "I'm not misinterpreting things. I'm telling you how this is coming off. You want company, but you're afraid of me getting hurt? Because really, the only thing you have to lose, you were supposed to lose before. You have more freedom, but less at the same time." Sighing, he slid the book back into the shelf, "I'm really tired of being treated like a kid, man. It gets old. I don't understand how you went from blatantly ******** people over to obsessively trying to keep me from harm. And then, as if I'm gonna believe this, you tell me you don't care about me. "You know I'd do and say anything to preserve the state of my well-being. Lonliness and fear have nothing to do with it. It's a matter of survival."
His voice involuntarily rose in volume. "Who said I want company?! Or that I was afraid of you getting hurt? You're not making any sense! 'What I have to lose'? What, you mean my life? If you're not a kid, then stop clinging to me like one!" Hearing himself go up another decibel or two, he took a breath and tried to calm down before speaking again.
"I am not 'obsessively trying to keep you from harm'. I am trying to keep me from harm. To do that, I have to keep you from doing anything stupid and for that I have to make sure your idiot boyfriend doesn't learn any more than he already knows. That doesn't mean I care about him and it sure as hell doesn't mean I care about you. But that does mean that indirectly I have to keep an eye out for you both.
