"That hurts." It didn't sound like a protest - just informing him in her faint little voice. "What do you mean? You already know. Did you forget?"

There were things Kammy just, didn't want to see. Not necessary because they were gross and evil and had way to much HP, but because they just shouldn't be here.
A small child was one of them. Kids didn't being in fog ridden hospitals with monsters about, they should be back at home eating cookies and milk.
There were also others here, though it was hard to make out who they were. There was a guy walking about with a large pipe though, and she looked at him warily. Who was he and what was he doing here.

"...did you find a creepy child?" Austin's voice was still low, at least, pitched for Liam -- but it would carry. There was nothing he could do about that. He drew in a slow breath, and then blew it out, flames wavering in its aftermath. He was trying very hard not to be annoyed, but --
"You found a creepy child and you're sitting out in the fog having a conversation with her?"

Harvard stood up abruptly. "Liam," he called out. He used his hands to propel the girl at Liam. "Take her, now. Be careful." He knew, he knew. He didn't know if Mimsy was real. He stared out into the fog, and, cupping his hands over his mouth, let out a shout.
"Caroline! Don't make me come find you!" This was probably a bad idea. Either a bad idea, or Harvard would feel very silly. Terrible odds.

Somehow, despite the mounting fear, Liam still managed to look affronted. "Not me, Harvard. He found her. I was just happened to be with him." It wasn't always his fault, okay?
"And she wasn't creepy a minute a--" The protest cut off abruptly as said child was thrust into his arms. He made a inarticulate protest, very nearly dropping his crowbar as he was forced to arrange the girl in his arms.
He wasn't even sure if he should be holding her!
"Harvard?" His voice was pitching, eyes darting. "What's going on?"

"..Austin is that you?" She frowned his way. "You're not about to drag me off again to the shadow realm are you?"
She kept a wide berth between herself and him.

"...we should go inside." It was sharp, straightforward, addressed to all of them. Austin met the small child's eyes for just a moment before he shuddered and looked away, raising his candles to light their path back toward the hospital. "I feel like it's about to get really gross out here."

For a short while, the little girl who called herself Mimsy simply looked as unnerved and concerned as any child would. She was ticking off all of the boxes correctly, appearing every bit as human as the rest of them.
Then she finally looked at them - first Liam, then at anyone else who was paying any bit of attention. Her eyes were black, oozing something inky that began to streak down her cheeks, and she smiled a monstrous smile. A smile of a predator to its cornered prey, one of inevitable victory.
"I am not a monster," she said, but from the sight of her, it wasn't especially easy to believe that.

"--you let it happen--again and again and again--kept her safe, kept her safe--it's your fault--your fault--you did this--I TOLD YOU--you all did this--you all did this and we're not safe--"
The girl was gone, if she had ever really been there at all, and Caroline stood in the fog before them. Even for an Infected creature, she looked particularly unhappy, bristling and poised to attack from any angle.

"I did nothing, Caroline." He folded his arms even as Kammy attacked, "Look at yourself, Caroline. Right now, who's the most monstrous?" He sounded a little sad as he spoke, but he spoke loudly and clearly, his eyes never leaving her.

Too late to run, then. Austin blew a sharp breath out through his nose, eyebrows pulling together, and he didn't hesitate, at least. Instead he stepped in and set fire to the end of Caroline's braid.
"Doctor, sometimes you're not as smart as you like to think." He snapped it back over his shoulder, and focused his eyes onto Caroline. "This isn't Caroline. Or if it is, it's too ******** late."
The scream was loud and sudden as the little girl looked up at Liam with black, leaking eyes, and he dropped her, jerking back and away to put himself behind Austin, away from the child(who disappeared), and away from Caroline as she appeared before them. Thus far the leads, or what was left of them, had taken a particular fondness to him that Liam would really rather not happen again.
"s**t. Not again" He was, again, effectively useless in the whole thing. But at least this time he was determined to stay out of the way. Austin had stepped in, Kammy(who he hadn't even realized was there) had made an attack as well. They didn't need him. He'd just make it worst.

"--no, no--no NO--" The furious shrieks were interrupted as she tried to fend off their attacks all at once, jabbing back at Kammy with her weapon, swiping at Austin with her clawed hand and a sneer dripping with malice. Her tail stopped short of striking Harvard's chest, and just gave him a deliberate shove.
Liam escaped entirely unharmed, because dropping that thing was the correct choice.
"--wrong, wrong--you're wrong--the pattern--you make and make and make the pattern--never safe--never safe again--I tried--I tried--you let it kill me--"
With a frenzied howl and a flicker of the 9 across her face, she was lost in the fog again. Only a faint hint of her voice remained, trailing through the fog away from them, counting over and over and over again. The pause had grown even lengthier between eight and ten.

His teeth clenched and a tic started in his jaw. He grabbed a hold of Austin's shoulder and spun him around. The crack of his hand against Austin's face was loud and echoing "Don't," he said, "-speak if you don't know anything." He pulled himself away and began walking.
"I trust you all can fend for yourselves." His voice was clipped and he stared off into the fog. Harvard had places to be. There were nines to count.
