Gilda took a deep sigh and joined him in trying to dispatch the creature, though she really would rather have not. She hated this, she hated everything about this situation, about where they found themselves and the things they were being forced to do.
At least it was only a cat, at least it was only a cat and not something even nearer and dearer to them.

Ras pressed it down with his hand, holding it still this time.
He drew the blade in a clean motion across its throat, then let its blood drain like a rabbit or a chicken. He'd helped kill and cook both, but he hadn't wanted to hurt it. He didn't begrudge it the bite. It was only trying to defend itself. He knew what it was like to be alone and scared. To have nobody else to rely on. He hadn't wanted...
He was still crying, but he waited on the cat, letting the tears roll down his cheeks as the cat fussed and shrieked and gave a last horrible, rattling breath.

When the creature was finally still, Gilda took his hand and pulled him to his feet, in a rare gesture of tenderness and motherliness and held him to her chest, feeling too numbed for tears and in some ways drawing catharsis from his own. She didn't find it easy to cry, and having him there seemed to make some difference in how she grieved that she couldn't express.
