Her luck certainly was enviable; she had already won twice whereas he had only been victorious once. Even so he did not begrudge her for it; in fact he was quite pleased that she was earning the coins for it meant she stood a greater chance of making it out of here. Harper was her name? He hadn’t heard it around District 2, but then again she didn’t really look like she had come from the prison either. Though she had quite a bright style he couldn’t imagine her as either a con or a cop. “I’m Nate by the way, nice to meet you Harper.” He held his hands open in order to single the dealer that he would be playing once more. He certainly hoped he wasn’t making a mistake in doing so.
“I guess that is what makes it so deceptive though, it seems easy until your luck turns.” He chuckled. “Or, at least that is what I have found in my brief experience.” Gently picking up his cards from the table he looked them over and began to formulate what his next move would be. "Too rich for my blood." He stated, pushing the cards back toward the dealer.

Harper felt a little bad for him, he didn’t seem to be having as good as luck as she did in the cards. Looking him over she wondered where he came from; he didn’t look as if he had been one of the university students. To be all fair though she hadn’t met everyone at the university for the most part she had kept to herself, getting to close meaning that when someone died she would lose him or her. That was not something she wanted to do anymore, but somehow she was starting to make more friends and taking more risk then she wanted.
“I… didn’t think about my luck I guess its holding out maybe… for now.” Waving at the dealer she waited for her cards, looking them over the nodded for another hit.

“What district did you come from if you don’t mind my asking? I’m from District 2, the prison.” He almost left it at that but flailed after a moment and went on. “I was visiting my uncle there, he was a guard and I recently graduated from the Police Academy so I was getting tips.” That was a close one; she could have thought he was a rapist or something awful like that.
Once again he raised his finger at the dealer letting him know that he would be trying again. He hoped something good would come of this; he could really use the coins. He was so darn close!
As though the fates were listening the cards he was dealt amounted perfectly to 20. "Yes!" He shouted before turning to look at Harper. "Maybe you are a good luck charm!"

“Oh I am from District one, the university.” There was a little bit of relief when he mentioned he was visiting his uncle as a police officer and getting tips on how to be better cop. It sounded better than her thinking that he was a thief of some sorts and that she would soon be out of a lot of money if she didn’t pay attention.
She raised a finger for another card and it was just as low as the previous one. At this rate she was really going to get into dangerous territory of going over.
When he won she grinned, “I hope so! You should stay then a little longer for a few more coins.”

“Oh really? The University huh? Must have come as quite the shock over there, one minute you are studying and the next everyone is foaming at the mouth.” He hunched his shoulders in discomfort over the subject. He knew it was a lot more serious than just that, but he didn’t want to get into the true horror of that evening. “What were you studying there?” Maybe talking about school would remind him of his days as an Academy Boot.
He nodded to the dealer and watched as the cards were dealt. An 8 wasn't a bad start at all, if he were lucky he could still reach the right number on his next go. "Hit me."

“Yea… one minute I was working on a project in the print room and the next moment a body was falling into the window and another gnawing away at some poor underclassman.” The thought was still disturbing, his face, the smell, even the noise of someone eating someone made a shiver crawl down her back. “I was working on my master’s in art. Not really a whole lot of helpful when it comes to this apocalypse but still.”
The next card wasn’t much help either, Harper gave up on the round and waited to start a new one.

He could only imagine how terrifying that must have been for her. His experience was traumatic, but at least he wasn’t in a place where his guard was down completely. Being around the inmates had him always vigilant, but to be totally at ease until that moment…
“Who knows, art may end up being the key to our survival.” He motioned around them with his hands. “I never would have thought gambling would be important.” He laughed.
“20.” The dealer grumbled. At least luck was beginning to change a little.

Harper chuckled thinking about how art could even save the world. “I don’t know about that, it would be pretty awesome if art did but I doubt it a bit. Tell me how was it at the prison, I imagine it a little more intimidating with the prisoners and the undying lurking around.”
Or maybe it was better than she thought, that they got along with one another a little more now that death was all in their face.
She waved at the dealer, frowning as she ended up with another low number. This was going rather terrible for her.

“Well if it won’t save us, at least it is something to get our minds off of the chaos right?” He asked with a smile. If he were talented he would likely be drawing or something of that sort all of the time just to get all of the horrible images out of his head. Though he was sure it gave her little comfort in a time as dark as this.
The dealer began to deal once more and he moved his head back and forth in a somewhat noncommittal gesture. “The prison isn’t all that bad aside from the lack of privacy and the Howling Ward, but other than that it is pretty secure.” He looked up thoughtfully. “The lines between convict and cop have blurred past the point of recognition, we are all the same now.” He looked down at his cards to see what he had come up with. A seven wasn't that bad. "How about the university?" He asked before motioning to the dealer to hit him.
