As Matilda crouched on the ground contemplating her options, a red-haired woman came screaming out of nowhere and bashed the enemy in with a fishing rod.
Sheepishly, she accepted the offer up and explained, "I was attempting to do my part in cleaning up the area while scavenging for anything useful. It seems I got a bit overzealous." Overzealous had to be a gross overstatement. "I should really get myself one of those," she murmured in appreciation of the women's weapon on choice.
A gaze at her savior's wrists gave her a clue as to the woman's origin. "I can't help but notice your... jewelry," she noted with a pause, not wanting to come off as rude, especially toward someone who probably saved her, "Are you by chance part of that prison group that's been exploring alongside us? I'm from the university group. I'm Matilda Baer." Matilda saw no reason to be dishonest.
Staggering over to the dissipating remains, Matilda kicked at the remnants to reveal a potato. "Why would these abominations have need of food items?," She pondered, picking the item up nonetheless.

"Ooh! I'm Monica Chavez," she grinned, smiling toothily at her temporary companion. "Yeah, I was an inmate at Apple when this all went down. It's nice to meet you!" Did that mean Matilda had been a student? Or - no, students weren't the only people at universities. "I hope you've all been doing well," she said, chewing her lip fussily. It went without saying that she didn't even notice the other girl bending over to see her loot.
Monica raised her eyebrows at the potato. "That's pretty strange," she agreed cheerfully. "But maybe it...stole it? From someone?"
That was a bad thought.

"A pleasure," Matilda replied with a smile of her own. "I was an English teacher before the world went to hell in a handbasket. What a way to finish out a day of lectures and grading papers," she added in a grumble.
"Other than my right arm being injured... among other things...I can't really complain." She gave Monica a quizzical gaze as she turned the potato over in her hand, "I can't imagine what it would need to steal food for... or are they capable of consuming normal foods like us? A normal human is fully capable of consuming meat of another human just like them, so..."
She trailed off and her brow furrowed at the implications of her own statement.

Monica nodded, wide-eyed. She'd kind of skipped through the bigger part of college - gotten a technical degree and hadn't looked back. But this, whatever it was, was a far cry from grading papers at a university.
"Ah - I'm sorry your arm was injured," Monica frowned. "I've been...I mean, I was losing a lot of blood, earlier. I think it's stemmed off some, but..." She trailed off, shrugging. You could never really know. "That sounds really creepy!" Monica giggled. "But I think - I mean, don't some animals just take things because they're curious? They don't act very smart...maybe it just saw the potato and took it because it wasn't rotting. Or something."
She shrugged. But Matilda was a teacher - she probably knew better, right?

"It's no problem. It's actually been feeling a bit better recently," the blonde soothed, rotating her shoulder a bit as proof. It still felt sore, but it was becoming manageable.
"That's entirely possible. Crows have a tendency toward shiny things, even it there's no actual use for it," Matilda cited in agreement, "It just makes me think, especially after seeing a crowd of those things maul one of my students, only for the girl to become one of them. One can only wonder if there's any lingering sentience. It doesn't help that I'm a bit on the half-empty side of life."
