Rajni waved her hands in front of her. "No no, I'm fine." If there was something worse than breathing heavily after stairs, it was being pitied for doing so.

While Aaron took the left room, Rajni took the right. It wasn't good to split up, but she also wanted some space to catch her breath and keep it together.

In hers she found a slew of ants covering every surface. A month of scavenging had taught her that that meant food.

She whipped the pantry open, but any food left was rotting and crumbling under a hoard of black dots. Useless.

She actually thought, somewhat reminiscent, that she used to hate ants. She had a can of RAID specifically for ant infestations and everything. Now she couldn't bother to care- ants weren't nearly as bad as zombies.

"Nothing here," she called to the other room.

A few long strides took him to the next room, which was a stark contrast to the one he was just in. Every piece of furniture had been turned over, broken, and torn apart.

Aaron entered, the sounds of glass breaking under foot. He had stepped on the remnants of a glass bowl.

"Good thing it wasn't a mirror." He mumbled, not wanting the extra bad luck. His long legs were a great asset as he had to stretch to step over a overturned cabinet, and shimmy past some tables and chairs, then he tried to push a cupboard out of the way...

BOOM, CRASH.

Silence.

"...Nothing here either."

Rajni instantly left her room to help Aaron fight off whatever zombie monstrosity had attacked him----

Only to find he was just clumsy. "Are you alright ..."

Just in case.

A hand reached out of the mess of broken wood and glass, swiftly morphing into a thumbs up

"Yeah, I'm good."

Rajni gave a little sigh, but her mouth was quirked in a smile. She hovered over the rubble pile to help dig Aaron out, seeing as he'd buried himself.

"C'mon let's get you up ..."

"Thanks dude" Part of his face appeared as Aaron forced broken wood and other things out of his way thanks to Rajni's help. Soon enough he pushed himself out of the mess and hopped onto the floor next to the girl.

"How about we check out another room?"

Rajni nodded, taking the time to dust Aaron off a bit. He had little bits of wood and glass all over him. Clumsy as always. She took the time to make sure all the little bits of glass were carefully removed, so as to not harm him later, and she did so with the precision of a 6-months-of-experience nurse. That way Aaron wouldn't bleed himself out later while he was trying to sleep or something.

"Yeah. Maybe .... don't knock things over." Just a suggestion. You know, so that he might end up a little less dead. Still, Rajni found it nothing but endearing. Most of the people here (herself included) were tired, worn down and ready to give up. It was good to have a little humor every once in a while to remind them why they were still doing this.

She led him to the next room, another bust. Then another, and another. IT seemed this floor had been wiped totally clean by vultures. "Next floor?"

Aaran's grin was sheepish this time, scratching his face with maybe just a hint of embarrassment. Maybe.

"But it's fun knocking things over." He whined playfully, following the girl as they visited each room. Each room being in various states of disrepair, yet none of them holding the things they needed. "Next floor."

Rajni snorted, ruffling some of his hair. "Fine, you win."

Up the stairs they went to the next floor. Rajni really hated stairs at this point. She wasn't even close to being someone who exercised as much as she should, and while she understood the value of cardio for running from zombies, it didn't make her any less happy about doing it. In fact, it kind of had her more inclined to hate it. She didn't like having to do something sheerly for survival. She missed when they could do things for fun. Not just living.

They reached the top and Rajni felt okay enough to explore. The very first room they searched had what they were looking for. Three big bookshelves lined from top to bottom will all sorts of things. Classics, contemporaries, textbooks. This person must have been a real bibliophile because they were everywhere. BOOKS!

"Do I get a prize for winning?" He asked, then following her up the staircase they went into the next room, and were faced with what they were looking for.

"Woah, bodacious man!" Aaron cheered, walking into the room and began picking a few of them from the shelves. "Woah, dude must have been a book worm. Or a dudette"

Rajni snorted and said, "If I had a prize, I'd give it." Nobody really had things anymore, not in the superfluous way they used to. Trinkets and excess were quickly traded away for necessities and protection.

She appreciated his respect for dudettes and followed him to the bookshelves. Moby d**k was always going to be her book (there was a special connection, forged by the whole "we survived that shitstorm" feeling).

"Any interesting ones?"
