SOLO: Making Things Happen

[Backdated to July 15th.]

Porrima had a feeling that she was getting a bit complacent with this whole senshi thing.

After the big brouhaha in the Rift, the powered world seemed to go quiet. Nothing had happened that held any significance she was aware of. Life went on. It was kind of depressing, really. Porrima found herself wanting a little more out of life than she was getting.

Her 18th birthday came around, and there was a great big celebration, not just for that occasion, but for her being college bound in the fall. Silas and Alia had both come home to celebrate with her, and there was cake and presents (mostly of the practical sort, though a new tablet was involved, which was absolutely fantastic). It was nice, but now that she knew that there was more out there, it all felt so mundane.

So, the night after her birthday, Porrima was jumping from rooftop to rooftop, extending her senses as far as she could, sniffing for even the faintest whiff of Chaos. Anyone would do. Heck, a Lieutenant that had literally been recruited yesterday would do. Nonetheless, the city seemed empty. Had Order really dealt such a blow to Chaos that they weren't sending wandering agents out anymore? That couldn't be.

She would soon learn to be careful what she wished for.

Porrima had stopped for one minute to get her bearings when she felt something prickle on the edge of her senses. Chaos had found her, which wouldn't be so concerning if the prickle weren't getting bigger and bigger by the second. She felt her heart thump oddly in her chest; she might just have landed in trouble. Shuddering, she stepped back, and then took off in the direction she came in, running as fast as she could and sailing over rooftops.

Unfortunately, the General on the other side of the prickle was much faster than she was and had teleportation to boot. A green-clad General came into existence in front of Porrima, and she slammed into him. He grabbed her, gripping her tightly to keep her from pulling away. “Just a basic senshi?” he snarled. “I was hoping for someone a little more important, but I’m sure your starseed will do just fine.”

Porrima tugged and tugged with all of her might, but she couldn’t pull free from the General’s vise-like grip. “Let me go,” she said. “Go find that more important person you’re looking for.”

“Why should I? It would be a good idea to take you out before you become important.” A wicked grin revealed a gold-capped tooth. The General reached back and and was about to plunge his hand into Porrima’s chest when a man’s voice cut through the air.

“Found you!”

Glitnir bounced over from a nearby rooftop, tackling the General with great force. The General released Porrima, who squeaked in reflex. “I can’t just let you go without consequences, especially if you’re about to attack an innocent senshi!”

The General snarled under Glitnir. “I thought I lost you. It looks like both a senshi and a knight will die tonight.”

“Yeah, go for my starseed, I dare you,” Glitnir said. “These chain marks aren’t just for show.”

“I’m not an idiot, Transcendent Knight of Mars,” the General said. “I may not be able to pull your starseed, but I can still kill you!”

The General’s weapon, a longsword, materialized in his hand, and Glitnir got off him to avoid getting his head chopped off. He summoned his scale and began swinging it, hoping to conk the General in the head with one of the baskets.

Porrima, meanwhile, had been watching in awe of her surprise savior. She couldn’t just stand around doing nothing, but she had a feeling that her magic wouldn’t be very useful. When direct fist-to-flesh attacks were banned, most weapons were able to exploit a loophole as an indirect attack. Still, she guessed that it wouldn’t hurt to give Glitnir that extra bit of insurance. Pointing at the General, she called out, “Court Objection!” and banned direct physical attacks for him.

The General dodged Glitnir’s scale and charged towards Porrima. “You think slinging magic at me will save you? Not a chance!” Having his back turned to Glitnir left him vulnerable, and he took a scale basket to the side of the head.

While the General was staggering, Glitnir pushed down on one scale basket to activate his magic. “Go think about what you’ve done,” he said.

The General was assailed by unnerving thoughts and weighed down by a heavy pressure. Growling, he began to crawl away. “Dirty trick,” he grumbled. “You live tonight. But the Negaverse will hear of this, and you will be hunted.” Pulling himself up with a struggle, he jumped down from the rooftop, at which point Glitnir stopped the flow of magic.

Glitnir exhaled heavily and walked towards Porrima. “Are you okay?”

Porrima shuddered in an attempt to shake out her nervous tremors. “I guess. A bit shaken, but not stirred. Thank you.”

Glitnir extended one gloved hand. “I’m Glitnir, Transcendent Knight of Mars. How about you?”

Porrima accepted the handshake. “Porrima, Senshi of Laws. I keep people from punching each other or using magic, but only one of those at a time.”

“Sounds handy,” Glitnir said with a nod. “Were you planning on patrolling more, or…?”

“I don’t think I should push my luck.” Porrima looked down at the ground, then back up. “I should probably head home.”

“How about I walk with you? I know being powered up at home is a bit dangerous, so I won’t take you all the way.” Glitnir paused and added, “Just in case that General’s friends are waiting for us.”

“That sounds like a good idea. Thank you.” Porrima turned around and took a few steps in the direction of her house. “It’s this way.”

The knight and senshi followed the rooftops towards Porrima’s home, chattering idly about different things they had seen on the job. After a while, Glitnir began to recognize the neighborhood, and started to wonder just who he was escorting home. As the pair went down to the sidewalk and drew nearer to Glitnir’s family’s home, he couldn’t stay silent on the matter any longer. “It’s funny. My family lives around this area too. I’ve got an apartment near DCU, but I still come home sometimes.”

“That’s nice,” Porrima said, wondering why the knight mentioned such a thing. “Who’s in your family, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“There’s my mom and dad, and then I have two sisters, one older and one younger.” Glitnir paused, then added, “What about you?”

“Mom, Dad, my older brother, and my older sister.” Porrima’s eyebrow arched at the similarities. “Funny how that works out.”

Glitnir stopped walking. Sure, his family was definitely not the only one with two parents, an older sister, a middle brother, and a younger sister, but red flags were starting to raise in Glitnir’s mind. Porrima had black hair and grey eyes like he did. He had learned to be very careful with potential coincidences. “Yeah, that is kind of funny. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but… who are you, really? Civilian, I mean. If you’re not okay with giving out your civ identity, that’s fine. Just thought I’d ask.”

Porrima had gotten a few paces ahead of Glitnir, so she turned around to face him. She took a moment to mull over the potential ramifications of revealing herself to the Knight, then decided that she was getting close enough to home to have to power down soon anyway. She shrugged and said, “I’ll show you,” before powering back down into Laura.

Glitnir’s eyes damn near bugged out of his head. “Laura?!”

“You know me?” Laura said, grinning at the knight’s surprise. “Well, then who are you?”

Glitnir released his powered form, becoming Silas once again. “Your brother.”

“Oh,” Laura said, genuinely surprised. She wondered how she didn’t catch the similarities sooner. “Hi, Si.”

“All you have to say is ‘Hi?’” Silas said, shaking his head. “I think we need to talk.”

“About what?” Laura said. “I think the situation is pretty self-evident. I’m Sailor Porrima, and you’re Glitnir Knight. We can fight evil together. Isn’t that nice?”

“You’re being awfully cavalier about this,” Silas said. “Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner?”

“You’re not supposed to give out your identity like candy,” Laura said. “Besides, I didn’t know you were also powered. I didn’t expect anyone to believe me if I told them.”

“Fair enough,” Silas said with a sigh. “I guess it’s good that we found each other. How about we patrol with each other? It’s always good to go in groups. My starseed might be safe, but yours isn’t, and having me with you will make Negas think twice about jumping you.”

“But then I won’t be able to fight any Negas at all,” Laura half-whined.

Silas narrowed his eyes. “This war isn’t just about fighting whatever Chaos comes in your path. It’s also about protecting what’s important to you, and you’re important to me. Besides, I think the opposite might be true. I’m pretty sure that Negaverse agents are at least required to report transcendent knights in their territory, if not actually challenge them.”

“Fine.” Laura looked down, shifted her weight, then looked back up. “I’m sure you’ll be helpful. Just don’t smother me or kick me out of the action, okay?”

“Laura, please,” Silas said. “Yes, it’s important for you to get combat action, but I’m not going to let you die in the process.”

Laura sighed heavily. “It must be a big brother thing,” she mumbled. “I’m tired. Let’s go home. Mom and Dad will be happy to see you. Alia hasn’t been around for a bit, so you’ll have to call her later.”

“All right,” Silas said. “It’ll be nice to be home.”

With that, the two Bright siblings headed home, with two completely different outlooks on the situation. Silas was deeply worried about what Laura was getting herself into and how well she could handle the rigors of senshi life, while Laura was pleased with having made a powerful new ally.

Only time would tell of the pair’s success or failure.

SOLO: Distortion Duo

Porrima and Glitnir patrolled together more often than not these days, most often at Glitnir’s insistence. Porrima didn’t mind the company, but she did mind that feeling of being watched like a hawk. Silas had always been protective of her, and perhaps he was right to be this way when the stakes were as high as they were, but it was still a bit annoying to be treated like a fragile princess when she had already been fighting on her own for a while.

Today the two were discussing Porrima’s powered history. “I can’t believe you were involved in the Rift invasion,” Glitnir said. “How did that make you feel?”

“I went in with a senshi named Elpis,” Porrima said. “I’m just glad we made it out. I’m glad I was part of such an important event and we actually accomplished something, but I’m also glad it’s over.”

“Elpis, Elpis…” Glitnir mumbled, trying to trace the name. “Oh, right! Elpis is one of Cor Caroli’s friends. He’s mentioned her to me.”

“Cor Caroli? I remember seeing him there. He helped perk us up where he could.” Porrima added, “Elpis has been helping me train for a while. She helped start off my senshi career in earnest.”

“She’s done a good job,” Glitnir said. “You’re good with those heels. Remember when I used to try to teach you how to punch to get rid of the bullies at school?”

“Yeah, and it got me in trouble,” Porrima said.

The conversation trailed off for a bit until Glitnir started it up again. “Hey, have you ever been to your planet?”

The notion made Porrima stop walking. “Now that you mention it, I haven’t.”

“Planets are important to senshi, just as Wonders are important to Knights,” Glitnir said. “You should go up there and see what you can learn about your past self.”

“Right, my past self… I remember reading that senshi are reincarnated.” Porrima paused to mull the idea over. “What’s your Wonder like?”

“It’s a big courthouse on Mars,” Glitnir explained. “I don’t have a past self because I’m a descended knight, but I have my ancestor up there. His name’s Cornelius, and while he’s been essential to my development as a knight, he’s a little bit of a troll.”

“Sounds like fun,” Porrima said. “I would like to meet him some day.”

Glitnir chuckled and shook his head, thinking about the old man. “He’ll probably ask if you’re my girlfriend and why you’re not a Cosmos Knight. He makes bad jokes all the time.”

“Still sounds like fun,” Porrima said.

Once again, the conversation dropped, but this time for a good reason. A small, black aura tingled on the edge of both their senses. “We found one,” Glitnir said.

“I can feel him. He’s this way,” Porrima said, and then took off in the direction of the aura. The aura didn’t feel like it belonged to anything stronger than a lieutenant, so she wanted an opportunity to fight without Glitnir blocking every single blow for her. A few bruises would be fine.

“Porrima! Wait! Where are you going?!” Glitnir’s advanced-level speed allowed him to catch up to Porrima quickly, and he grabbed her arm, sending her jerking to a stop.

“Let go,” she growled. “It’s just a lieutenant. We’re supposed to fight lieutanants. If basic senshi can’t fight lieutenants, what good are we for other than youma-dusting?”

Glitnir frowned. The ability to fight on her own had become a matter of pride for Porrima, and he couldn’t say he blamed her. Slowly, he released her arm. “Go, quickly. You’ll lose them if you don’t move it.”

With no hesitation, Porrima took off once again, jumping onto the rooftops to better track her target. Unfortunately, she felt the black spot going further and further away. She had been detected, and the owner of the black spot aura didn’t seem to be up for a fight. Chicken. Alas, after a while the black spot disappeared, sending Porrima back to the big bright spot that was her brother.

“You couldn’t get them, could you?” Glitnir could see the heavy disappointment in Porrima’s face.

Porrima shook her head. “No. They got away. They might have felt your huge aura and didn’t want to risk you coming for them.”

Glitnir sighed, not liking the implication that she was blaming him for a missed fight. “I’m sorry, Porri.”

Porrima merely shrugged. “There’s always youma.”

Glitnir tried to turn the resignation into something positive. “Yes, exactly! Youma are always a problem, and they’re not always smart enough to run away from stuff more powerful than them. Let’s go dusting.”

“Fine.” Porrima walked past Glitnir, and he followed. He made a mental note to try and get it into Porrima’s head that the war wasn’t just about fighting before it was too late.

SOLO: Jibblies

Justine had just finished an encounter with a pretty little thing who’d accepted her business card and expressed interest in her art. Not bad, not bad. Maybe she’d get a thank you portrait later, if she bothered to follow up on that interest. Red hair with purple tips, right. A distinct look. She didn’t think she’d forget someone who’d bothered to bother her like that.

She’d done enough human figure studies for now, she figured. After all, she was running out of ideas. She could only draw these fancy people in wine glasses and teacups and a container of yogurt for so long. She was bored. Bored Justine was not productive. Bored Justine would probably fall asleep on this couch, which would look very weird at a charity benefit. No drugs, just boredom.

She got up and stretched, stowing her iPad in her purse for the time being, and walked over to where the auction tables were. Yes, she could do object studies now. There was quite a bit of variety in the objects and lighting, so that would be a good time. No more boredom.

A girl with orange hair walked over and squinted at a crystal bird for a few seconds before walking away. Weird, but Justine wasn’t too fussed about it. She only wished that girl had hung around for a bit longer so that she could make a portrait of her in a stare-off with the bird, complete with that weird anime lightning conflict line. Crystal birds were serious business, apparently.

When the other girl left, Justine had a weird feeling, one that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. She turned around and saw a distinctly indistinct someone looking at her from leaning on one of the auction tables before getting up and leaving with a quickness. A very odd quickness, almost like one step and then poof, gone. A flash step. Very odd, and Justine wondered if her eyes were playing tricks on her, or if there was a Negaverse agent teleporting around. She wasn’t going to power up and expose herself to find out. Maybe that guy did just that. What an idiot.

Shrugging, Justine walked back to the main area to see if her couch was still available (yes, her very specific couch that she had claimed as hers), only to see that same person blink through the crowd. She didn’t often get unnerved, but this felt more than a little weird. She was going to call shenanigans if this happened a third time.

Which, upon reaching her couch, it did. The figure got off the couch, stepped forward, and vanished. Justine did not like the feeling this gave her, like an internal shudder. The Jibblies, as some stray other Corrupt had said once, some time ago. Pulling her iPad out and clutching it like a security blanket, she looked around before resuming her art. However, the nervous feeling didn’t subside immediately, and that made coming up with new ideas hard. Sighing, she lowered her iPad and stared out into the crowd.

That went sour quickly, but maybe those donor portraits would perk her up.

SOLO: Don't Eat Rocks

Porrima didn’t have much reason to be powered up during the Star Festival, but being powered up was good for covering a lot of ground quickly, which she did want to do. With a sketchpad in hand, she made her way across the rooftops of the city, occasionally stopping to do some environmental studies of the city when she thought she found a particularly compelling angle. She did it quickly, so it was almost like gesture drawing, but with a cityscape. The results were a little bizarre, but that’s how she liked it, the fluid lines flowing together in innovative and unusual ways.

No senshi or knights or other orderlies out tonight, so that was nice. For one reason or another, Porrima didn’t get harassed often, and she wasn’t going to complain about that. It was nice to be just a perfectly average corrupt senshi wandering around Destiny City and doing her own thing. She was probably going to get yelled at for not meeting energy quotas, but she could handle that. She’d make up for it eventually. When she felt like it.

When preparing to make a jump to another building, her foot struck something strange. What was a rock doing on a rooftop? This wasn’t even a flat roof that might have gravel on it or something. Turning back around, she noticed that she hadn’t stumbled over any ordinary rock. It appeared to be glowing, no, twinkling on its own. Far be it for her to be distracted by the shiny, but she wanted to investigate.

Picking through the dirt on the roof and getting it under her nails (thoroughly annoying, she thought, pausing to pick the dirt out with other fingernails, because ugh that was gross), she eventually pulled the stone out from where it was stuck. It must have been stuck to not be dislodged by her foot. Once she freed it, she noted its crystalline shape and structure. It was definitely not a starseed, despite glowing like one. It was a fancy magical rock of some sort, but what sort? Was there such a thing as a perfectly ordinary glowing rock?

The thought passed through Porrima’s head to bite the rock or put her tongue on it to see if there was some kind of current flowing through it, but she immediately thought better of it. Who went around biting random space rocks, anyway? More importantly, who bit rocks that they just found on the ground, regardless of origin?! It made her wonder if any corrupt senshi had ever eaten their own starseed. That was a side matter but she had a feeling it happened.

Hijinks with starseeds aside, Porrima felt she needed to figure out what to do with this thing. Someone might have lost it, or been looking for it, or maybe it was for a scavenger hunt. The rock slid easily enough into subspace, further hinting at magical power and puzzles. It seemed that her night had acquired a small mission.

She thought she had an idea of where to look, but looking with purpose was more fun than wandering aimlessly.
